In France, teaching of cross-cultural psychology occupies a marginalized place in universities. It gives rise to debate and controversies. The authors of this paper conducted an exploratory study among 130 French students in order to account for their representation of the teaching of cross-cultural psychology in France. The results revealed that the importance and the interest of this teaching seem better perceived following the first professional practices acquired through internship. Students found this discipline responding to contemporary social and cultural issues that cross our increasingly globalized societies but mentioned that it is little promoted in French universities. They positioned cross-cultural psychology at the interface of the social psychology and clinical psychopathology. However, they pointed out the risks of a “francocentrism” and a psychiatrization of this teaching, concentrated on the immigrant populations. These results have led the authors to suggest the necessity to undertake actions for structuring this new disciplinary field.
