After a survey of the previous scholarship on English multilingual accounts whose base language is Medieval Latin, it transpired that no published work had attempted to trace dialectal features in the scribes vernacular. Nor has, to date, any investigation addressed that question save for a footnote in Hulberts (1936) work. This article offers a systematic study of the northern vs. supralocal spelling forms in the Durham Account Rolls. The data analysis comprises vowels (the use of the
/ digraphs for long vowels and the - and - pairs) and consonants (in the form of absence of palatalisation, final-position fricatives , and the - and - pairs). The results conform to larger trends postulated in the literature on monolingual Northern Middle English (NME)/ Scots sources, which acknowledges the dialectally hybrid nature of most NME texts. In so doing this investigation contributes to refining our knowledge of NME in widely unexamined, non-monolingual, textual contexts.
