In K-12 teaching, stress and burnout are serious issues with
large numbers of teachers reporting negative work experiences
(Richards, 2012; Skinner & Beers, 2014; Zhang & Sapp, 2008). These
issues have been regarded as serious not only in Western countries
including the UK, the U.S.A., Israel, Australia, Russia, and Germany
(Kyriacou, 1987; Rudow, 1999), but also in many Eastern countries,
including Taiwan, Japan, and Hong Kong (see Chang, 2009 for re
view). Stress and burnout can reduce teachers energy and
commitment to their daily responsibilities and increase attrition.
While a range of personal factors can lead to teacher burnout, it is
also shaped by teachers work experiences. In particular, current
school and policy contexts characterized by reduced budgets,
pressure to increase student achievement under accountability
policies, and lack of administrative and parental support all have
the potential to increase teachers stress levels and cause burnout
(Lambert & McCarthy, 2006; Richards, 2012).
