Systematic mechanism for identifying the relative impact of supply chain performance areas on the overall supply chain performance using SCOR model and SEM

This research aims to introduce a systematic mechanism for developing an organization specific supply chain performance measurement (SCPM) model and for generating a single regression relationship between the overall supply chain performance (SCP) and each of the SCPM areas using an organizations numerical data. The research uses a case study conducted in a small-scale asphalt manufacturing plant located in West Texas, USA with a sample of 218 data records collected over a period of one year. In this article, the systematic mechanism is demonstrated using the data from the case study organization. It provides guidance for developing a hierarchical SCPM model for the organization using the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) model, and then to obtain the final regression equation for the overall SCP using the Structural Equations Modeling (SEM) technique. The results obtained from the SCPM mechanism are then compared with the managerial input on the SCP that was analyzed using the Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP). The results of the comparison are used to validate the SCPM results. A major finding of this research is that the regression coefficients provide a clue for the level of sensitivity those measures have on the overall SCP under given organizational SC capacity and operating levels. The SCPM areas with higher regression coefficients reflect higher sensitivity, thus even a slight variation in the measures contributing to those areas will be contributing to a considerable impact on the overall SCP measures. The findings lead to the implication that managers should pay close attention to controlling the stability of the SC operational processes which are responsible for generating those SCP measures. The goal should be to maintain the desired output levels with the least amount of fluctuations. The regression results therefore provide insight to the managers for identifying the individual SCP measures to be managed more intensely than others based on their relative impacts on the overall SCP. The results are applicable as long as the organization does not change its organizational SC capacity and operating levels, thus can be used for better managing the SC in future. This research fulfills multiple research gaps highlighted in literature, mainly: the absence of a systematic approach to generate an organization specific SCPM model; and the absence of a SCPM system capable of generating a single cause–and-effect relationship between the overall SCP and the numerous hierarchical performance measures reflecting their relative impact. Therefore, this study can be viewed as an attempt to increase the level of awareness in the SC field. The article also proposes several future research directions to test the repeatability and validity of the proposed SCPM mechanism.

A hybrid multiple criteria decision making approach for measuring comprehensive performance of reverse logistics enterprises

The area of reverse logistics has recently received considerable attention and is an important business policy. The performance measurement of reverse logistics is seldom studied due to the complexity and uncertainty of its operations. This paper provides a multi-criteria performance measurement model to assess the reverse logistics enterprise’s performance by considering performance attributes such as product lifecycle stages, strategies, processes, capabilities, and perspectives and measures. In developing the performance measurement model, a hybrid multi-criteria approach combining DEMATEL, fuzzy ANP and AHP methods are applied. Furthermore, the relative importance of these attributes and their criteria with respect to each other and their contribution to the overall performance are affected by the competitive outlook considered by the reverse logistics enterprises. The performance evaluation model developed in this paper incorporates relevant attributes and achieves a more realistic representation of the enterprise’s performance by calculating the overall comprehensive performance index. This study provides decision makers a basis for improving the reverse logistics enterprise performance.

Barriers to big data analytics in manufacturing supply chains: A case study from Bangladesh

Recently, big data (BD) has attracted researchers and practitioners due to its potential usefulness in decision making processes. Big data analytics (BDA) is becoming increasingly popular among manufacturing companies as it helps gain insights and make decisions based on BD. However, there many barriers to the adoption of BDA in manufacturing supply chains. It is therefore necessary for manufacturing companies to identify and examine the nature of each barrier. Previous studies have mostly built conceptual frameworks for BDA in a given situation and have ignored examining the nature of the barriers to BDA. Due to the significance of both BD and BDA, this research aims to identify and examine the critical barriers to the adoption of BDA in manufacturing supply chains in the context of Bangladesh. This research explores the existing body of knowledge by examining these barriers using a Delphi-based analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Data were obtained from five Bangladeshi manufacturing companies. The findings of this research are as follows: (i) data-related barriers are most im portant, (ii) technology-related barriers are second, and (iii) the five most important components of these barriers are (a) lack of infrastructure, (b) complexity of data integration, (c) data privacy, (d) lack of availability of BDA tools and (e) high cost of investment. The findings can assist industrial managers to understand the actual nature of the barriers and potential benefits of using BDA and to make policy regarding BDA adoption in manufacturing supply chains. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to justify the robustness of the barrier rankings.

Indicative assessment of design efficiency of mining roadways

The goal of the study was to develop a method for evaluating the design efficiency of roadways in coal mines. For this purpose, the AHP method (Analytic Hierarchic Process) was used to develop the significance of natural, geomechanical, mining and technical factors in the stability of roadways. According to the research, the greatest impact on the design and maintenance of the roadway is exerted by: tectonic disturbances, seismic activity, joints and compressive strengths of rock, exploitation workings nearby and support bearing capacity. Based on the AHP results, each factor was assigned a percentage effect on the design of the roadways’ support and their stability. Furthermore, they were assigned a numerical or descriptive range of variation in the scope of 0.2 to 1.0, where the value of 1.0 means high impact on the roadway stability. Then, the indicative method was suggested for the estimation of two indicators: the roadway design efficiency index RDE and the roadway functionality maintenance index RFM. Each of the indices was divided into six degrees indicating the roadway design difficulty in the given geological-mining conditions and also the difficulty of its maintenance. The listed indexes allow support scheme with a modified load-bearing capacity to be planned. In the phase of driving or using the excavation, this method will prove useful in calculating the necessary reinforcement

Multi-criteria inventory classification groups similar items in order to facilitate their management. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) and its many variants have been used extensively for this purpose. However, DEA provides only a ranking and classes are often constructed arbitrarily with percentages. This paper introduces DEASort, a variant of DEA aimed at sorting problems. In order to avoid unrealistic classification, the expertise of decision-makers is incorporated, providing typical examples of items for each class and giving the weights of the criteria with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). This information bounds the possible weights and is added as a constraint in the model. DEASort is illustrated using a real case study of a company managing warehouses that stock spare parts.

A novel multi-criteria decision framework for evaluating green supply chain management practices

This study proposes a novel decision framework to evaluate green supply chain management (GSCM) practices. The framework is developed by combining Monte Carlo simulation, AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) and VIKOR (VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje) methods under fuzzy environment. The AHP is used to obtain relative weights of evaluation criteria for GSCM practices. The VIKOR is used to generate the rankings according to GSCM performance, and then to recommend the best performing organizations. This framework offers a new way of dealing with uncertainties resulting from decision makers’ incomplete and/or vague information by utilizing the Monte Carlo simulation. An illustrative case is used as well to exemplify the proposed approach.

An integrated framework for sustainable supplier selection and evaluation in supply chains

Due to increased customer knowledge and ecological pressures from markets and various stakeholders, business organizations have emphasized the importance of greening and sustainability in their supply chain through supplier selection. Therefore, a systematic and sustainability-focused evaluation system for supplier selection is needed from an organizational supply chain perspective. This work proposes a framework to evaluate sustainable supplier selection by using an integrated Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), ViseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR), a multi-criteria optimization and compromise solution approach. Initially, 22 sustainable supplier selection criteria and three dimensions of criteria (economic, environmental, and social) have been identified through literature and experts opinions. A real world example of an automobile company in India is discussed to demonstrate the proposed framework applicability. According to the findings, ‘Environmental costs,’ ‘Quality of product,’ ‘Price of product,’ ‘Occupational health and safety systems,’ and ‘Environmental competencies’ have been ranked as the top five sustainable supplier selection criteria. In addition, out of the five sustainable suppliers alternatives, supplier number ‘three’ got the highest rank. The work presented in this paper may help managers and business professionals not only to distinguish the important supplier selection criteria but also to evaluate the most efficient supplier for sustainability in supply chain, while remaining competitive in the market. Sensitivity analysis is also conducted to test the proposed framework robustness.

Assessment of socio-techno-economic factors affecting the market adoption and evolution of 5G networks: Evidence from the 5G-PPP CHARISMA project

5G networks are rapidly becoming the means to accommodate the complex demands of vertical sectors. The European project CHARISMA is aiming to develop a hierarchical, distributed-intelligence 5G architecture, offering low latency, security, and open access as features intrinsic to its design. Finding its place in such a complex landscape consisting of heterogeneous technologies and devices, requires the designers of the CHARISMA and other similar 5G architectures, as well as other related market actors to take into account the multiple technical, economic and social aspects that will affect the deployment and the rate of adoption of 5G networks by the general public. In this paper, a roadmapping activity identifying the key technological and socio-economic issues is performed, so as to help ensure a smooth transition from the legacy to future 5G networks. Based on the fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, a survey of pairwise comparisons has been conducted within the CHARISMA project by 5G technology and deployment experts, with several critical aspects identified and prioritized. The conclusions drawn are expected to be a valuable tool for decision and policy makers as well as for stakeholders.© 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Environmental and economic performance assessment of desalination supply chain

The interest in desalination has been growing steadily for the recent decades due to the global increased demand for fresh water. Viewing the desalination network as a supply chain permits decision makers to evaluate the per formance of desalination processes end to end. However, there are few articles considered evaluating the desa lination supply chain as a whole. Thus, the purpose of this study is to develop performance measurement criteria and metrics that is designed to evaluate the efficiency of desalination supply chain concerning the economic and environmental factors. Different desalination and supply chain performance measures related to economic, and environmental perspective have been reviewed. The performance measures and metrics have been further re fined by a panel of experts using Delphi technique. By adopting the analytic hierarchy process technique, a weight factor has been assigned to each perspective and metric according to its significant in desalination supply chain. It is believed that both academics and practitioners would benefit from the framework developed. Finally, it must be realized that desalination is one part of the solution. Only with a synergistic approach involving desa lination, water management, consumption reduction and water reuse could efficiently solve the water demand challenge in future.

A Novel Hybrid MCDM Approach for Complicated Supply Chain Management Problems in Construction

The paper tackles a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model related to supply chain management, problems, and the supplier selection problem. Modern management of materials and products requires continuous evaluation of numerous complex social, ecological, and economic factors. A group decision process using Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP) approach presented to find the criteria weights. Measurement of conflict among criteria and decision makers presented with illustration and numerical example. Firstly, eight evaluation criteria, including cost, quality, distance, and delivery, reliability, reputation, and technology level, compatibility, and development ability identified. Later, the ARAS and the Multiplicative Utility function adopted for ranking and selecting suppliers. Criteria values normalized according to Hovanov method.
