3 Economic analysis of woody biomass supply chain in Maine

An economic biomass supply chain model for Maine was developed to estimate the delivered cost of biomass chips using the stumpage price paid to the landowner, the cost of harvesting and chipping the logging residues, and the cost of transporting the biomass chips to a biorefinery for biofuel production. Harvesting costs were estimated using Maine-specific productivity equations, harvesting assumptions, and hourly costs, but the resulting model is applicable to any region with woody biomass. Transportation costs were estimated using round trip distance to the potential biorefinery. The delivered cost of biomass was estimated for multiple scenarios, including different machine cost rates, variables impacting ma chine productivity, transport distance, and stand characteristics. When biomass was treated as a waste product (only chipping costs included), the estimated delivered biomass cost was $11/green tonne (GT) (with a sensitivity analysis range of $4 to $24/GT), less than half the current biomass chip price in Maine ($28/GT). When a portion of the harvesting cost was included in the delivered biomass cost, the esti mated delivered biomass cost increased three-fold to $30/GT (with a range of $8-$82/GT). The results of this analysis will serve as a portion of an integrated sustainability assessment for a new biofuel pathway. This model can be easily adapted to other geographical regions with different site-specific inputs.

4 A procedure for deciding symbolic equivalence between sets of constraint systems

Infinite sets of possible traces are symbolically represented using deducibility constraints. We describe an algorithm that decides trace equivalence for protocols that use standard primitives and that can be represented using such constraints. More precisely, we consider symbolic equivalence between sets of constraint systems, and we also consider disequations. Considering sets and disequations is actually crucial to decide trace equivalence for processes that may involve else branches and/or private channels (for a bounded number of sessions). Our algorithm for deciding symbolic equivalence between sets of constraint systems is implemented and performs well in practice. Unfortunately, it does not scale up well for deciding trace equivalence between processes. This is however the first implemented algorithm deciding trace equivalence on such a large class of processes. 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

6 Venture capital investments and the technological performance of portfolio firms

What is the relationship between venture capitalists’ selection of investment targets and the effects of these investments on the patenting performance of portfolio companies? In this paper, we set out a modelling and estimation framework designed to discover whether venture capital (VC) increases the patentingperformanceoffirmsorwhetherthiseffectisaconsequenceofpriorinvestmentselectionbased on firms’ patent output. We develop simultaneous models predicting the likelihood that firms attract VC financing, the likelihood that they patent, and the number of patents applied for and granted. Fully accounting for the endogeneity of investment, we find that the effect of VC on patenting is insignificant or negative, in contrast to the results generated by simpler models with independent equations. Our findings show that venture capitalists follow patent signals to invest in companies with commercially viable know-how and suggest that they are more likely to rationalise, rather than increase, the patenting output of portfolio firms.

7 CSR related management practices and firm performance: An empirical analysis of the quantity–quality trade-off on French data

This paper analyzes how different combinations of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) dimensions affect corporate economic performance. We use various dimensions of CSR to examine whether firms rely on different combinations of CSR, in terms of quality versus quantity of CSR practices. Our empirical analysis based on an original database including 10,293 French firms shows that different CSR dimensions in isolation impact positively firms’ profits but their effect in term on intensity varies among CSR dimensions. Moreover, the findings on the qualitative CSR measure, based on interaction between its dimensions, show that the substitutability of these dimensions is highly significant for firm performance. However, in terms of the intensity, those interactions produce differential effects. Actually, asking whether a firm starting with a certain configuration cannot perform better by adding or removing some dimension(s) we found that only one configuration fulfills this requirement: green and HR. The interpretation is that when a firm starts with this configuration then it is better not to move to another configuration. In all other configurations, firms can always improve their profits either by adding or removing some dimensions. Finally, the profitability of CSR investments in French firms seems to rely on a specific qualitative mix of different CSR dimensions rather than a pure quantitative approach accumulating practices without designing a consistent set of interactions among them.& 2014 Elsevier B.V. 8 Characterization of the combustion process and cycle-to-cycle variations in a spark ignition engine fuelled with natural gas/hydrogen mixtures

A study is presented of the influence of using mixtures of natural gas and hydrogen in different fractions (0, 25, 50, 75, 100%) on the combustion velocity and cycle-to-cycle var- iations in a spark ignition engine. The experimental facility consists of a single-cylinder spark ignition engine. The engine rotational speeds are 1000, 1750 and 2500 rpm. Fuel/air equivalence ratio was kept constant equal to 0.7 during the experiments. A two-zone thermodynamic combustion diagnosis model, based on solving the mass and energy conservation equations, is used to analyze the experimentally obtained pressure com- bustion chamber in the engine. The two-zone model considers a spherical flame front centred at the spark plug, and solves the intersection of the flame front with the piston, cylinder head and cylinder wall, in order to provide the values of the flame radius corre- sponding to the burned mass volume and the surfaces for heat to the piston and walls. An automatic procedure based on genetic algorithms is used to determine the optimum pa- rameters needed for combustion diagnosis: Angular positioning and pressure offset of the pressure register, dynamic compression ratio, and heat transfer coefficients. The paper focuses on using the values of the burning velocity computed from the pressure register and especially on the analysis of the cycle to cycle variation in the natural gas/hydrogen fuelled engine, quantified through the standard deviation and the coefficient of variation of the burning speed. Increasing the hydrogen content in the mixture with natural gas in- creases its burning velocity. This effect is linear with hydrogen fraction, except for very high values of the fraction, when the effect of hydrogen dominates combustion. Addi- tionally, and of practical importance, increasing the hydrogen fraction reduces the relative dispersion of combustion. 9 Chatter detection in turning using persistent homology

This paper describes a new approach for ascertaining the stability of stochastic dynamical systems in their parameter space by examining their time series using topological data analysis (TDA). We illustrate the approach using a nonlinear delayed model that describes the tool oscillations due to self-excited vibrations in turning. Each time series is generated using the Euler-Maruyama method and a corresponding point cloud is obtained using the Takens embedding. The point cloud can then be analyzed using a tool from TDA known as persistent homology. The results of this study show that the described approach can be used for analyzing datasets of delay dynamical systems generated both from numerical simulation and experimental data. The contributions of this paper include presenting for the first time a topological approach for investigating the stability of a class of nonlinear stochastic delay equations, and introducing a new application of TDA to machining pro- cesses.& 2015 Elsevier Ltd. 10 Travelling and standing envelope solitons in discrete non-linear cyclic structures

Envelope solitons are demonstrated to exist in non-linear discrete structures with cyclic symmetry. The analysis is based on the Non-Linear Schrodinger Equation for the weakly non-linear limit, and on numerical simulation of the fully non-linear equations for larger amplitudes. Envelope solitons exist for parameters in which the wave equation is focussing and they have the form of shape-conserving wave packages propagating roughly with group velocity. For the limit of maximum wave number, where the group velocity vanishes, standing wave packages result and can be linked via a bifurcation to the non-localised non-linear normal modes. Numerical applications are carried out on a simple discrete system with cyclic symmetry which can be seen as a reduced model of a bladed disk as found in turbo-machinery.& 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
