1 Influence of institutional economics on firm birth and death: A comparative analysis of hospitality and other industries

This paper investigates how public policies, such as taxes and regulations influence firm formation (birth) and closure (death) in the hospitality and other industries in the United States (US), using an institutional economics approach and the dimensions of the Economic Freedom of North America (EFNA) index. The literature has been scant when it comes to examining the effects of policies of formal institutions on firms’ birth and death in the hospitality industry, and whether these effects in hospitality differ from those of other sectors. The study uses panel data from government sources and the EFNA dimensions and applies cross-sectional dependence and unit root tests, followed by a panel generalized least square approach for the analysis. Our findings show that components of economic freedom have varying effects on firms’ birth and death. The study provides practical contributions for policymakers and managers by improving the understanding of firm births and deaths in the US.

2 Sustainability led innovations in the hospitality industry: A case study of the adoption of the Green Key Scheme standards in the Netherlands

The adoption of sustainability standards within organizations represents one of the most significant challenges that firms face. This qualitative based study draws on the core-periphery thesis of organi- zational change and the resource-based view of the firm to explore the three adoption architectures firms can use to integrate green certification scheme standards into their business operations. As a result, we examined the nature of the linkages between the different adoption mechanisms, and how such linkages might influence a firm’s sustainability performance. The study demonstrates that organizational attributes, previous experience with a sustainability agenda and the degree of fit between the externally generated sustainability standard and the prevailing business practices can affect the abilities of firms to integrate sustainability standards into their organization structures and thus their sustainability per- formance. Hence, this paper opens new avenues for sustainability certification researchers to look at the various configurations of standards adoption architectures, and also for practitioners to broadly embrace both institutional and organizational exigencies relevant to the internalization of certification standards.© 2020 Elsevier Ltd. 3 The internet of things (IoT): The next challenge to the hospitality industry

The Internet of Things (IoT) is defined as “the network of physi cal objects or ‘things’ embedded with electronics, software, sensors and network connectivity, which enables the objects to collect and exchange data.” (Mann, 2015). Others, define IoT as “ a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers (i,e,URI,URL)andtheabilitytotransferdataoveranetworkwithout requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. . .. a thing, in the Internet of Things, can be any natural or man-made objectthatcanbeassignedanIPaddressandprovidedwiththeabil ity to transfer data over a network” (Rouse and Wigmore, 2017). In the Internet of Things, “sensors and actuators (components of machines that are responsible for moving or controlling a mech anism or system) embedded in physical objects—from roadways to pacemakers—are linked through wired and wireless networks, often using the same Internet Protocol (IP) that connects the Inter net”.

4 A new marketing mix model to rescue the hospitality industry_ Evidence from Egypt after the Arab Spring

After January 25th 2011 Egypt witnessed political, economic and social instability leading to drastic consequences in the hospitality and tourism industry. Thus unstable situation reflected on the deteriorated occupancy percentages that led to declined profit margins, higher employee layoffs and degraded quality of product and services. The objectives of this research is to examine how the Egyptian hospitality properties manage this dilemma through their marketing practices, and to propose a new marketing mix model that adds new layers of depth to the traditional marketing mix model. A methodological framework was designed to help in the assessment process of management practices pertaining to marketing initiatives during times of crisis. Results indicated the presence of tactical elements that assembled the traditional marketing mix model in the investigated hotels. However, these elements are not effectively used and the interaction between them not appears very clear. Results also indicated that the new proposed model would help in providing a framework for the Egyptian hospitality industry to maintain their competitive position during crisis time and avoiding undesired situations for labour force and decline of companies revenues.

5 Factors affecting hotels adoption of mobile reservation systems: A technology-organization-environment framework
عوامل موثر بر پذیرش هتل ها سیستم های ذخیره همراه: چارچوب تکنولوژی محیط زیست سازمان-2016
This study explores why hotels adopt mobile reservation systems; based on a technology-organization- environment (TOE) framework, nine factors are hypothesized to explain hotels' adoption of mobile hotel reservation systems (MHRS). Logistic regression is employed to analyze data gathered from 140 hotels in Taiwan. The results indicate that compatibility, firm size, technology competence, and critical mass are significantly positively related to MHRS adoption, while complexity is significantly negatively related to MHRS adoption. By indentifying the predictors of hotels' adoption of MHRS through the TOE framework, this study provides several theoretical and practical implications related to mobile service adoption.© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. 6 Environmental rankings and financial performance: An analysis of firms in the US food and beverage supply chain

This research examined the financial–environmental performance of firms in the US food and beverage supply chain. Findings suggest that firms can be classified into four distinct environmental–financial categories: those that excel on environmental initiatives and perform well financially; those that perform poorly on both initiatives; those that perform admirably financially but poorly on environmental initiatives and; those that perform admirably on environmental initiatives but poorly financially. Overall, firmswith higher environmental rankings tended to perform better financially than those ranked lower.
