1 Estimating construction waste generation in residential buildings: A fuzzy set theory approach in the Brazilian Amazon

The estimate of construction waste generation is the key decision-making information for policy-makers, construction managers, and the like to devise informed waste management strategies. However, estimating construction waste generated from projects is particularly onerous, as numerous factors related to design, site, and construction are largely in a fuzzy nature when the estimating job is conducted. Built upon previous studies, this paper seeks to develop a model that can be used to estimate construction waste generation based on fuzzy set theory. It follows a trilogy of methodology, including model development, sensitivity analysis, and model validation. A set of IF-THEN rules are developed based on two independent variables, built area and number of floors. A sensitive analysis was conducted to evaluate the influence of the independent variables on waste generation. The model is further calibrated and verified through a case study of 23 residential buildings constructed in the Brazilian Amazon. The model obtained an accuracy of 64.29% in the development phase and 66.67% in the validation phase, showing that the results are largely acceptable. By using this model, it is possible for a waste manager to draw up a baseline graph to indicate the volume of construction waste generation as his/her building project as it progresses. The research is also of novelty by using fuzzy set theory to deal with the fuzzy nature of waste generation in construction projects. Further studies are recommended to enhance the accuracy level of the model by engaging more factors and more quality data.

2 Identifying and addressing latent causes of construction waste in infrastructure projects
شناسایی و پرداختن به علل نهفته زباله های ساختمانی در پروژه های زیرساختی-2020
Infrastructure projects often generate significant amounts of waste. However, research has focused so far mostly on the reactive treatment of waste, rather than its proactive prevention. Moreover, few previous studies have dealt with waste from infrastructure projects. This paper presents a method that can be used by project teams to identify both the causes of major types of waste in infrastructure projects, and the means to prevent its generation. The method is based on function modeling to support a detailed analysis of project activities that are critical in terms of their economic and environmental impact. The existing function modeling framework is expanded, to include a quantitative representation of material flows in the project’s supply chain. The proposed method was applied in a real project to verify its feasibility.

3 Availability and processing of recycled aggregates within the construction and demolition supply chain: A review

As a response to the great disparity in the recycled aggregates (RA) evaluated in most investigations and those sourced from recycling plants, this paper presents an overview on the subject and seeks to provide information on the present waste issue in the construction life cycle. Several factors related to the wider recognition and use of RA in construction are also described and analysed in this paper, including the main barriers to reuse and recycling, economic and environmental impacts, the choice of demolition methodology, the recycling procedure and certification of the final product. Increased governmental intervention, with ensuing strict legislation and comprehensive standardization, have been found to be key drivers for a greater pro-active engagement of construction and demolition related entities. Furthermore, with recent developments on the classification of RA, which can facilitate certification, it will become increasingly easy to increase the stakeholders confidence on the products quality and resulting materials predictable performance, consequently increasing demand for a technically feasible and potentially more economical substitute to their natural counterparts.

4 ارزیابی آزمایشگاهی آسفالت های گرم حاوی ضایعات ساختمانی و تخریبی

مطالعه آزمایشگاهی در زمینه ی استفاده از مصالح بتنی بازیافتی (RCAs) از ضایعات ساخت و ساز و تخریبی (CDW) در آسفالت گرم (HMA) برای رو سازی کف خیابان ( پیاده روها ) , انجام شد. مخلوط HMA حاوی 0٪، 5٪، 10٪، 20٪ و 30٪ RCA به جای سنگدانه های طبیعی نیز , مورد بررسی قرار گرفت. روش طراح مخلوط مارشال , برای بهتر کردن این مخلوط استفاده شد. و به منظور بهبود حساسیت رطوبت مخلوط , به مدت 4 ساعت در اجاق الکتریکی , قرار داده شدند. نتایج نشان داد که مخلوط با مشخصات اسیب رطوبتی اسپانیا (Spanish moisture damage , ) مطابقت دارد. خواص مکانیکی (سختی، تغییر شکل دائمی و فرسودگی ) مخلوط مورد مطالعه قرار گرفت. این مخلوط , خواص مهندسی خوبی از خود , نشان داد . اگرچه HMA با RCA نیاز به بررسی های بیشتری دارند , نتایج حاصل از این مطالعه بسیار امیدوارکننده بود.
