31 Transforming water into wine: Environmental bricolage for entrepreneurs

The theory of bricolage in the entrepreneurial realm requires further refinement and development in unexplored entrepreneurial contexts. The analysis strives to elaborate on this theory, putting bricolage into the hands of environmental entrepreneurs which deal with distinctive natural resource constraints. This paper is aimed at understanding how entrepreneurs acquire and combine resources in a natural resource-scarce and exploited environment. Through a qualitative inductive study of 20 entrepreneurs belonging to the Italian wine industry, the authors shed light not only on basic constructs of bricolage literature, but also on three further unique processes associated with environmental entrepreneurship e environmental gain, sensibilisation and network establishment e, thus arguing the existence of a specific bricolage framework: environmental bricolage. The findings highlight that bricolage not only relates to young ventures but also occurs in later phases of the entrepreneurial process. The research conductedalso offers practical implication for helping environmental entrepreneurs understand the importance of bricolage as a mean to create new resources, achieving greater environmental and social impacts.© 2020 Elsevier Ltd. 32 Innovative green product diffusion through word of mouth

Green products are gaining popularity because of their environmental friendliness compared with conventional products. This study examines a word-of-mouth (WOM) diffusion problem of a newly launched green product and investigates the effects of consumers’ environmental awareness (CEA). Analytical results show that CEA significantly affects green product diffusion in terms of firms’ pricing strategies and market shares. The market structure also has effects on diffusing a green product: the pricing strategies and environmental performance of diffusing a green product in a Bertrand competition market are different from those in a Stackelberg game market. When considering green-design decision, it is interesting to show that the green product’s price decreases with the increase of CEA, which is contrary to the pricing strategy without green design. From the numerical study of the CEA-featured WOM diffusion case, we find that CEA-featured WOM does not affect the pricing strategies of the green and conventional products, but does have a significant impact on the market shares of both products.

33 Activities related to human medicines in Romania: Legal environmental protection issues

Current environmental research focuses extensively on pharmaceutical waste, demonstrating the contamination caused by active pharmaceutical ingredients. Regulations and programs to evaluate, prevent, and reduce environmental risks linked to human medicines are currently being developed in various countries. We assessed the Romanian legislation to identify the potential areas of development of environmental protection policies in the pharmaceutical field. Laws and regulations of interest were selected, and their relevant provisions were analysed using methods of legal interpretation, then corelated with their equivalent in more developed countries. Romanian legislation requires an evaluation of the environmental impact of human medicines, an assessment of non-clinical research and pharmaceutical manufacturing projects, appropriate management of pharmaceutical waste and its disposal on a contract basis, and the collection and disposal of expired or unused medicines by pharmacies. In practice, however, a coherent system for pharmaceutical waste management is lacking because of many legal loopholes in environmental protection. Romanian legislation does not include specific rules regarding sound environmental practice for clinical research laboratories, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and wholesale distributors. The pharmaceutical industry has no legal responsibility to manage and dispose expired or unused medicines collected from the population. Equitable sharing of environmental responsibility by the pharmaceutical industry actors along with the involvement of public authorities should be established via legislation and regulation that reflect the requirements mandated by other more advanced countries. Additionally, continuous training programs should be provided for practitioners to reinforce their role in the rational use of medicines and professional campaigns should be created to raise public awareness about preventing environmental contamination.

34 When scientists become detectives: investigating systematic tree poisoning in a protected cove

The systematic killing of trees is usually aimed at eradicating pests or alien plant species susceptible to harm existing natural ecosystems. In some cases, trees may become the subject of dispute between neighbors, which sometimes ends in tree death after months or years of dispute. In this paper, we analyze a case of clandestine tree killing and look into ways through which evidence left by delinquents can be analyzed a posteriori with state-ofthe- art approaches. The investigation presented here looks at a series of old-growth trees that were supposedly poisoned inside a protected, nineteenth century grove in Switzerland. After the sudden, unexplained death of several old Black poplar (Populus nigra) trees along the main alley in fall 2015 and their subsequent removal, the dying of five additional, neighboring Sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) and English walnut (Juglans regia) trees in 2016 promptly triggered a suite of criminal investigations at the property. During an initial inspection, a large number of boreholes was found in the root plates of the dying trees. We present findings obtained from treering, wood anatomical and dendrogeochemical investigations performed on root, stem and leave material from the assumedly poisoned trees and show that massive amounts of chemical elements – supposedly in the form organic pesticides with high Al, As, Fe, Cr, Ni contents, aluminum phosphides or glyphosate-based pesticides – were injected into 36 boreholes drilled into the roots around September 2016. Results obtained in this study are currently used in criminal investigations, and are a nice example of how scientific detectives can help their “real World” colleagues in identifying delinquents.

36 Microbial lipolytic enzymes e promising energy-efficient biocatalysts in bioremediation

Enzymes are biological catalysts that significantly speed up reactions by lowering their activation energy. Compared to chemical catalysts, enzymatic reactions take place in milder temperature conditions. The wide range of advantageous catalytic properties has enabled the use of enzymes in different fields of biotechnology. Microbial lipolytic enzymes have gained attention for the ability to catalyse biotransformation reactions of different esters-bond containing compounds. Conversion of the latter into highenergy products like biofuel and other value-added products (fatty acid esters, mono- and diacylglycerols, etc.) via energy-efficient and ecologically-friendly way makes these biocatalysts an important tool for sustainable biotechnology. However, the role of lipolytic enzymes in the waste management was not being well explored. This review highlighted some important aspects and strategies of lipolytic enzyme-mediated bioremediation to detoxify the lipid, plastic, pesticide and other environmental waste combined with production of important industrial compounds via less energy consuming way. Future perspectives of microbial lipolytic biocatalysts in environmental safety and energy saving are discussed herein as well.

صنعت مد یکی از بزرگترین بازارها برای محصولات غیرقانونی حیات وحش است. این مطالعه به بررسی مصادره‌های حیات وحش مرتبط با صنعت مد لوکس ایالات متحده پرداخته است که بین سال‌های 2003 و 2013 انجام شده است تا شناسایی روند هدایت، اجرا و سیاست بهتر انجام شود. یافته‌های این مطالعه نشان دادند که تعداد حادثه‌ها طی یک دوره‌ی 11 ساله افزایش یافته است در حالیکه تعداد اقلام مرتبط ضبط شده در این مدت کاهش یافته است. از این مصادره‌ها، نزدیک به 88% کالاهای تولید شده بودند. بخش کوچکی از تیره‌ها، بخش اعظمی از مصادره‌ها را به خود اختصاص می‌دادند با خزندگان که به طور خاص 84% از حوادث را شامل می‌شدند. بیش از نیمی از حیات وحش، صید وحشی بود و از آنجا به هشت کشور صادر می‌شد. بر اساس این یافته‌ها، نشان داده شده است که سیاست‌ به طور خاص در ارتباط با کاربرد چرم و پوست عجیب و غریب تصویب می‌شود و این پیشگیری از وقوع جرم در کنار تعهد به پایداری از برندهای مد را می‌توان در کاهش واردات غیرقانونی و بهبود پایداری صنعت مورد استفاده قرار داد.

38 What can the news tell us about the environmental performance of tourist areas? A text mining approach to China’s National 5A Tourist Areas

This study aims to evaluate the environmental performance status of tourist areas and explore the influencing factors using text mining of web news. As the leading tourist attractions in China, the National 5A Tourist Areas face severe environmental challenges, and were hence chosen to exemplify the rapid assessment approach in the big data era. This study used over 1,300,000 words from online news sources and assessed the environmental performance of 120 National 5A Tourist Areas to conclude that (1) water is the most impacted environmental resource; (2) tourist area environmental performance can be classified into (a) environmental pollution, (b) ecological and resource pressure, (c) landscape character issues and (d) others; and (3) the primary factors influencing the environment are tourism and business operating activities, with the tourist areas’ environmental performance types being strongly related to their spatial locations and weakly related to their resource types. By comparing the environmental performance types in this paper with related research the effectiveness of this study’s approach is validated. These conclusions and this approach can provide guidelines and tools for environmental assessment and promote tourist area management

39 Environmental management accounting in the Middle East and North Africa region: Significance of resource slack and coercive isomorphism

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is suffering from serious environmental issues, which are caused mainly by industrial and non-financial business activities. Implementing environmental management accounting (EMA) will help businesses manage environmental issues better and improve how they treat the environment. The key motivation for undertaking this study is that earlier research reported a poor level of environmental accounting practices by firms in the MENA region. These studies documented the necessity to develop a better understanding of EMA practices and the factors that in- fluence their employment. Based on the new institutional sociology (NIS) perspective of institutional theory and resource slack theory, this study examines the influence of technological capabilities, environment-focused human resources management (EFHRM) and institutional isomorphism, specif- ically on the extent to which EMA practices are implemented in non-financial listed firms from eight MENA countries. These countries are Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan and Egypt. A web-based survey approach was utilised; and the data was analysed through structural equation modelling (SEM). The findings indicated an overall poor widespread of the use of EMA practices in the selected firms as perceived by the participants. Also, the findings suggest that technological capabilities, EFHRM and coercive isomorphism positively and significantly influence how EMA practices are implemented. Coercive pressures, technological and human resources are affecting the extent of EMA use in this study’s sample, but not to a great extent. Hence, coercive pressures should be maximised by regulatory bodies in the selected MENA countries in order for EMA practices to be widely accepted. Furthermore, governments should facilitate the outsourcing of experts who can help with implementing EMA practices. It means collaborating with non-government partners, such as accounting associations, industry associations, research & consulting firms and educational institutions. These kinds of collaborations can lead to better support for environmental management and EMA, thus instituting the required educational programs and training to enhance employees’ awareness of EMA practices that include the role of technology.© 2020 Elsevier Ltd. 40 Sustainable business models and eco-innovation: A life cycle assessment

Eco-innovative business models are prominent elements of the development of sustainable production and consumption systems in organizations of all sizes, especially for small and medium enterprises, where a key challenge is to direct eco-innovation strategies toward the goals of their business model. Therefore, using product life cycle assessment, this research analyzed the alignment between the sus- tainable business model and the eco-innovative strategies of a Brazilian company in the veterinary homeopathy pharmaceutical industry. Disregarding the controversial discussion about homeopathy, this activity has shown significant growth, having a representative economic importance in the animal protein production chain. The research adopted a case study method for one of Brazil’s leading com- panies in this activity. Data were collected through interviews, process analysis and company records. The results were built through quantitative and qualitative techniques that demonstrated that the eco- innovations developed by the company are directed toward the creation of new production methods and, above all, new products. The management model was framed in the “adopt a management role” archetype, in accordance with the literature. It was found that eco-innovation strategies are important for the development of the company’s business model and that this alignment is possible only when there is a management system and investments in the company’s ability to eco-innovate in product, process and organizational structure.© 2020 Elsevier Ltd.
