81 Modelling green and lean supply chains: An eco-efficiency perspective

This manuscript proposes a model to support decision making and to help managers identify the best set of green and lean supply chain management practices to improve their eco-efficiency. To attain this objective, a mathematical model based on eco-efficiency concepts is suggested to overcome the trade-offs between lean and green practices. To illustrate the model application, a case study from an automotive supply chain is presented. Some management practices that are instituted for green or lean benefits have opposite effects on the environmental and economic performance of companies. One of the main findings of our study is that not all companies belonging to the same supply chain can be absolutely lean or green. There should be compromises in the individual companies’ behaviour so the environmental and economic constraints of the supply chain are both satisfied. The proposed model represents a strategic framework to support the design of eco-efficient supply chains.

82 The importance of intelligent transport systems in the preservation of the environment and reduction of harmful gases

This study explores the role of using Intelligent Transportation Systems ITS to solve environmental problems, caused mainly by traffic congestion, within the city of Baghdad. The issues of congestion stem from the lack of street capacity, facilities to accommodate the increase in means of transport, absence of proper management based on modern transport and technical development, lack of efficient and convenient public transportation services and, dependence on private cars. This leading to increased traffic density, and changes in speed of traffic flow which causes an increase in energy consumption and gas emissions such as carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen dioxide, soot, and particulate pollutants. This research studies the pollution rates caused by congestion in the streets connected to the intersection of Jadriya, which is located near Baghdad University. The proportion of gases emitted by vehicles was calculated using regression equations and this calculation has depended on the traffic volume. In addition, other factors that contributed to the calculation some of this equations include: speed of traffic flow, street capacity, the height of neighbouring buildings, and forestation intensity. The final results demonstrate the types and proportion of gases that pollute the environment as compared with the international health standards to determine the percentage of the encroachment of polluting gases in the area. The possibility of applying ITS was discussed, by reusing regression equations to estimate emissions depending on the variation of future traffic volume and speed. Future traffic volume was estimated by a percentage of views of a group of experts in the field of transportation. The results indicate a significant decrease in emissions if ITS applied.

83 Lean Integrated Management Systems in MSME Reasons, Advantages and Barriers on Implementation

MSMEs have been globally considered as an engine of economic growth and as key instruments for promoting equitable development. The organization with the help of the lean integrated management system will be able to attain the quality objectives and targets with the lesser paperwork, simpler integrated system requirements and also the better hygienic conditions and environment friendly waste disposal practices. 5 S coupled with safety now becomes 6S.The implementation of 6S with Integrated EHS management system will lead to safer working conditions with increased productivity and building the image of MSMEs to customers. Basic concept on lean integrated management system (IMS) into MSMEs and analysis on reasons, advantages and barriers at lean IMS implementation are presented in this paper.

84 Analysing the Role of International Drivers for Eco-innovators

The aim of this paper is to analyse the impact of several “international” drivers on firms devel oping or adopting eco-innovation (i.e., eco-innovators), with the help of a bivariate probit model with sample selection and using a database of Spanish innovators. We test how the eco-innovative behaviour of innovative firms is affected by international sources of funding, one international regulation (the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme, EU ETS), customers in foreign markets, cooperation with international institutions and the presence of foreign equity in firms. Our results show that the influence of international factors on the eco-innovativeness of firms is modest. Public subsidies from international sources do not increase the likelihood of being an eco-innovator, although national sources of funding do. The EU ETS and cooperation with international actors positively and significantly affect eco innovators. Firms with foreign equity are not more likely to eco-innovate and selling abroad does not increase the likelihood of being an eco-innovator.

85 Uncommon leisure traffic – Analyses of travel behaviour of visitors

The traffic performance of leisure traffic has increased over the few last years. The choice of transport mode for (short-time) vacations up to a distance of 1,000 km (oneway) is dominated by motorised private transport. There is, therefore a considerable potential for making visitor traffic more environment friendly by modifying traffic management. The current empirical database for holiday traffic that is required for optimally adopted concepts has certain limitations. This paper relates to uncommon leisure traffic. It examines the travel behaviour of visitors in Northern Hesse, based on a survey that was conducted in the summer of 2013.

86 A Decision Support Tool for the Strategic Assessment of Transport Policies – Structure of the Tool and Key Features

Decisions on transport policy measures proposed by the European Union (EU) have long-term and important impacts on economy, environment and society. Transport policy measures can lock up capital for decades and cause manifold external effects – thus, policy measures may have a tremendous scope, especially if proposed on a European level. In order to allow European policy-makers to evaluate transport polices, a strategic assessment tool is required to compute economic, environmental and social impacts of transport policies. The paper illustrates the conceptual phase of development of the strategic high-level transport policy assessment instrument HIGH-TOOL. After careful identification of user requirements, on the basis of EU policy documents and user surveys, the conception stage of the strategic transport policy assessment tool is described in terms of tool structure, scope of output indicators, transport policies covered and other key features. Besides elaborating the structure and key features of the assessment instrument, the paper demonstrates the complexity and sensitivity associated with the conception stage of the development of a policy assessment tool. Several targets of a policy assessment tool are mutually conflicting, which results in the need to carefully counter-balance these targets, under consideration of methodological and implementation-wise aspects. The paper elaborates trade-offs between different tool objectives and derives a magical polygon of targets of an assessment instrument. مسئله کوله پشتی چند بعدی یک مشکل NP-hard است. این مشکل به طور گسترده در مقاله بررسی شده. در این مقاله، راه حلی برای مشکل بودجه بندی سرمایه¬ی بودجه فدرال دولت در نیجریه با استفاده از الگوریتم ژنتیک ترکیبی پیشنهاد شده توسط [32] فراهم کردیم. همچنین با تقسیم پروژه سرمایه به چهار گروه شامل: بخش اقتصادی (X1)، بخش خدمات اجتماعی (X2)، بخش توسعه منطقه ای/ محیط زیست (X3)، و بخش مدیریت (X4)؛ از رویکرد [33] برای مدل بودجه¬بندی دولت فدرال استفاده کردیم. از نرم افزار MATLAB برای آنالیز استفاده شد، مشاهده شد که راه حلی بهینه است که ارزش راه حل بهینه 277.64 بیلیون نایرا است. نتیجه نشان می دهد که بخش اول و دوم انتخاب خواهد شد (X2 ,X1= 1؛ X4, X3 = 0).

90 Social network analysis reveals that communication gaps may prevent effective water management in the mining sector

Sustainability issues are often difficult for companies to manage because they require communication across organisational departments and divisions. This paper provides some of the first empirical evi dence that communication “silos” exist within the mining sector, and that they may be impeding effective water management. Results of a social network analysis at a mining company revealed gaps in direct communication about water-related issues between the two largest production departments. This gap was particularly surprising because the departments were connected in the other communication networks studied, namely: information, ideas, problem-solving and friendship. The Health, Safety and Environment department played a crucial brokerage role within the water network, suggesting that water is primarily perceived as an environmental issue. A lack of direct communication between the major production departments could pose a barrier for recognising and responding to production-critical water risks. The work also found that the water network was characteristic of a core-periphery structure, such that communication was vulnerable to the removal of central “hubs”. These hubs were dominated by senior management, which may present a risk for responding promptly to water-related crises. Further research is needed to investigate the impacts of a siloed communication structure for managing other sustainability issues including energy and community development.
