Characteristics of Traffic Flow Management in Multimodal Transport Hub (by the Example of the Seaport)

In order to ensure efficient functioning of multimodal transport hub it is necessary to provide proper traffic management both inside and outside of it. This article presents assessment of freight traffic flows management impact on the state of traffic flows in adjoining street-road network. This is one of actual tasks aiming to ensure traffic safety in proximity to large terminal complexes. The following results were obtained in the course of work: – limiting values of street-road network stable functioning parameters for infinite horizon were defined; – periods of hub steady functioning in condition of negative stability were defined with the use of traffic micro simulation programs – a non-conventional approach in solving the problems of assessment of functioning of terminal complexes and adjoining street road networks. – conditions of implementation of adaptive simulation model enabling execution of transport flows within the terminal were defined.

Algorithm for Risk Assessment in the Introduction of Intelligent Transport Systems Facilities

Introduction of intelligent transport systems (ITS) facilities is a complex and time consuming process. It requires developing various ITS architectures, a clear definition of tasks (needs of the user) and compilation of databases. In order to avoid negative results of introduction of ITS projects, a new approach in designing ITS, taking into account all possible risks of each stage of designing and introducing ITS facilities, becomes a priority. The paper proposes an algorithm for risk assessment during introduction of ITS projects. A risk management system is required for identification, grouping and analysis of major risks of ITS, as well as for developing the ways to mitigate possible risks.

Procedure for Calculating On-Time Duration of the Main Cycle of a Set of Coordinated Traffic Lights

The task of enhancing efficiency of traffic lights operation demands optimization of the throughput capacity of a regulated street and road network junction including rational and full use of an operation cycle of traffic lights. Oftentimes, the existing calculation system for an operation cycle of traffic lights at intersections does not provide a jam-free and safe route for transport in rush hours. In this article the authors suggest a new calculation methodology for an operation cycle of traffic lights based on the expert calculation which considers the necessity for keeping the possibility of entering a crossing by all vehicles that have arrived to a crossing from each of conflicting directions (including the most loaded one) during one cycle; the use of vehicles slow-down rate called in the traffic rules as “without emergency braking”; the use of phase coefficients at the calculation of the main cycles of the less loaded directions.

Meso-DTA Traffic Model Technology for Evaluating Effectiveness and Quality of the Organization of Traffic in Large Cities

A scientific approach to assessing the quality of the organization of traffic in large cities requires use of new methods and the most advanced information technologies. Developing the mathematical apparatus and software for modeling traffic flows allows a systematic approach to the analysis of effectiveness of measures to improve traffic management. This scientific article finds the answer to creating an original methodology for assessing the quality of traffic management on the basis of the parameters of mesoscopic models and theories of qualimetry in the conditions of high load of the street and road networks in large cities.

Criteria for Substantiation of Rational Pavement Design as Bases of Traffic Safety throughout Life Cycle of Transport Structures

Presently used conventional Russian pavements including macadam base asphalt covering loses its advantages under the current conditions of heavy and high traffic. In this regard, for the development of the countrys economy and transport infrastructure, a rational pavement design is developed, which is presented in rigid fragmented asphalt bedding course. It provides high homogeneity and uniform strength of coating with low variation factors resulting in increase of the pavement life time and service life. The rational pavement design with a fragmented base layer compared to the conventional one has a higher resistance to formation of ruts and cracks that improves safety and reduces the risk of an accident.

Application of Geoinformation Technologies for the Transportation Demand Estimation

One of topic issues in estimating transportation demands deals with gathering baseline data and development of transportation models subject to special trips generators, which include large objects of population gathering. Study of characteristics describing operation of such objects in conjunction with application of geoinformation databases can significantly improve the quality of transportation simulation and estimation of transportation demand in the area of special trips generators.

Modeling as a Method to Improve Road Safety During Mass Events

Mass events are disturbing influences on transport system repeatedly increasing demand for transport services. At the same time, the nature of management depends both on the system condition and on the event properties. It is necessary to take into account the frequency of event, its scale, significance or level which influence management decisions and the necessity of infrastructure changes. At the same time, it is necessary to take into account how infrastructure changes will influence system efficiency under normal conditions after the event. Simulation modeling is the best tool for search of the optimal solution. The article shows peculiarities of safety ensuring of transport system using the concrete examples of organization of mass events in Russia and Poland.

Adaptation Capacity of the Traffic Lights Control System (TSCS) as to Changing Parameters of Traffic Flows Within Intellectual Transport Systems (ITS)

The paper states the problem of assessment of adaptation capacity of the TLCS as to changing parameters of traffic flows. The object of the study is movement of vehicles on signal-controlled intersections. The subject of the study is the method of assessment of impact of basic parameters of traffic flows on the capacity of signal-controlled intersections. Analysis of effectiveness of existing approaches to calculation of the traffic lights control cycle time allows development of a mathematical model for justification of algorithms for traffic lights control, taking into account widely varying characteristics of traffic flows. A mechanism of implementation of the proposed control method into the ITS environment was developed on the basis of this model. A model experiment was carried out; assessment of end-to-end performance of the proposed mechanism was conducted.

Classification Investigations of Traffic Management Schemes Having Conflict Loading at the Signal-controlled Road Junctions

The results of classification investigations of the efficiency of the traffic management schemes (TMS) are provided according to the criterion of their conflict loading (CL). The latter is determined by types and number of conflict points and maneuvers allowed by the Road traffic regulations in traffic and pedestrian streams. X- and T-shaped one-level signal-controlled junctions (SJ) of streets and roads have been examined in megapolises having various methods of traffic management. Among them there are single-phase management, management in separate directions and combined traffic management in regulatory restrictions of levels of requirements to traffic safety. TMS classification is developed for a complete group of options to formulate and solve the management problems.

The Method of Determining the Number of Phases in the Traffic Light Cycle on the Allowable Intensity of Conflicting Flows

Reduction of vehicles delay at the main urban transportation routes is one of objectives for traffic management on the road network. To improve performance of signalized crossings, the method for evaluation of the possibility to add vehicle flows with internal conflicting flow tracks in traffic light cycle phases. Allowable intensity ratios of conflicting traffics without signalization established by GOST R 52289-2004 are taken as a basis of decision on additional flows inclusion in phases. The example of incremental determining of allowable intensities of minor turning flows is made at preset intensity of main flows.
