2 What explains the degree of internationalization of early-stage entrepreneurial firms? A multilevel study on the joint effects of entrepreneurial self-efficacy, opportunity-motivated entrepreneurship, and home-country institutions
Integrating recent theories of entrepreneurship with new institutional economics, we develop a multilevel model to deepen our knowledge of how micro-level entrepreneurs’ personality and motivational antecedents interact with macro-level home-country institutions in determining internationalization by early-stage entrepreneurial firms. Data were collected from Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Adult Population Survey, GEM National Expert Survey, and the World Economic Outlook Database for the year of 2014. The results show that the personality trait of entrepreneurial self-efficacy contributes positively to the degree of internationalization via mobilizing opportunity-motivated entrepreneurship and that home-country formal institutions strengthen the above re- lationship of such young entrepreneurial firms.

3 Corporate entrepreneurship, country institutions and firm financial performance
Adopting an institutional perspective, we propose that home country intellectual property (IP) and employee protection institutions moderate the relationship between corporate entrepreneurship (CE) and firm perfor- mance. Examining 9642 European firms, we find that whereas internal CE is more positively correlated with firm performance in countries with less stringent IP protection and less stringent employee protection, external CE is particularly negatively correlated with firm performance in countries with less stringent IP protection and more stringent employee protection. These results provide a richer view of the relationship between CE and firm performance than the extant entrepreneurship and international businesses literatures suggest.

4 The study of institutional entrepreneurship and its implications for transition studies
Innovations accompanying transitions often prompt institutional change if they do not match with existing institutions. Transition studies started to incorporate institutional dynamics into their research, but efforts hitherto remain underdeveloped. In this paper, we systematically re- view the institutional entrepreneurship literature. Based on a reading of 153 empirical cases, we identify trends and biases in the literature and we distil a number of insights for transition studies to engage with.

5 Health insurance coverage and sources of advice in entrepreneurship: Gender differences
Most of the previous literature examining health insurance and entrepreneurship focused on the effects of provisions of health insurance coverage on the decision to start or end self-employment. This paper takes a different approach and investigates the decision to purchase health insurance once self-employed. Using data from the US Federal Reserve Board’s 2016 Survey of Consumer Finances, we found that in 2016 (when full provisions of the Affordable Care Act were in place) the self-employed were less likely to be insured, especially females who in the general population are more likely to be insured. Compared to the general population, the odds of being covered by health insurance were 62% lower for self-employed males and 83% lower for self-employed fe- males. Additionally, self-employed females were less likely to be insured when they reported using friends and family as a source of financial information.

6 Territorial experience and the making of global norms: How the Quellaveco dialogue roundtable changed the game of mining regulation in Peru
The current evolutions of the participatory paradigm in South American mining have imposed dialogue mechanisms as a new standard for the non-state regulation of mining territories. Intrinsically linked to good governance frameworks, participation is both singular in the forms it takes on a local level and normative in its global scope. This paper aims to highlight the importance of territorial experimentation in the standardization and dissemination of global standards on different scales, through their reporting by international institutions. Working from the emblematic case of the Quellaveco copper mining project in southern Peru, we examine the multi-scale impacts of a dialogue experiment conducted between 2011 and 2012, as well as the local, national and international discourses that have tried to demonstrate its success in resolving socio-environmental conflict. We argue that through these discourses, the Quellaveco experience has been standardized until it was adopted as a new standard for mining governance. This marks a paradigm shift in the socio-environmental regulation of mining activity, from a state-centric approach to a multi- stakeholder vision.

7 Formal institutions and opportunity entrepreneurship: The contingent role of informal institutions
This paper analyzes opportunity entrepreneurship through the interplay between formal and informal institutions. It seems evident that not all entrepreneurial initiatives have the same quality, thus the goal of a society should be to encourage the activities that best contribute to innovation and value generation. We theorize that informal institutions are contingent to the formal institutional environment where the new ventures operate. Our empirical results, using GEM data, confirm that, in countries with a more individualistic orientation, the relationship between formal institutions and opportunity entrepreneurship is more intense, as happens in societies with lower levels of uncertainty avoidance

8 Do government and legal barriers impede entrepreneurship in the U:S:? An exploratory study of perceived vs: actual barriers
In this exploratory study, we investigate how the actual and the perceived level of government bureaucracy correlates with nascent ventures outcomes, a largely understudied topic in entrepreneurship literature. We use data merged (N ¼ 922) from the U.S. Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics II (PSED II)—which tracked nascent startups over a six-year period—and the Economic Freedom of North America Index from the Fraser Institute. We find no relationship between state-level economic freedom and startups outcomes and no relationship between the actual and the perceived government bureaucracy. Additionally, government is perceived as a major barrier by only 6% of entrepreneurs (of whom only 54% actually check government regulations), and 1% of entrepreneurs list regulations as the main reason for quitting the startup process. Overall, our results suggest that government and legal barriers are not significantly related to nascent startups’ outcomes and are not major barriers for entrepreneurs.

9 Reassessing the law, finance, and growth nexus after the recent Great recession
The paper provides a reassessment of the relationship between financial structure, finan- cial development, and economic growth conducting cross-section and panel econometric analyses for a sample of 62 countries over 1980–2016. In line with the traditional litera- ture, we confirm the existence of a positive cross-country relationship between the legal system, financial development, and growth even including the experience of the recent Great recession; in addition, when jointly assessing the effect of financial structure and financial development on growth, it emerges that a more bank-oriented economy enjoys higher benefits, in terms of long-run real GDP per capita growth, than a market-oriented one. When we consider variations across countries and over time, we find that both fi- nancial structure and financial development affect growth but in an opposite way as the cross-section analysis. In particular, when we control for their joint effect on growth, we observe a positive impact of market-based financial systems, and a negative impact of the overall financial development. We also provide evidence of the existence of a positive and significant relationship between economic growth and Shadow banking during the 2002—2016 period, highlighting the crucial role played by non-bank financial intermediation in complementing traditional banking and in affecting the real economy.

10 Financial institutions’ business models and the global transmission of monetary policy
Global financial institutions play an important role in channeling funds across countries and, therefore, transmitting monetary policy from one country to another. In this paper, we study whether such international transmission depends on financial institutions’ business models. In particular, we use Dutch, Spanish, and U.S. confidential supervisory data to test whether the transmission operates differently through banks, insurance companies, and pension funds. We find marked heterogeneity in the transmission of monetary policy across the three types of institutions, across the three banking systems, and across banks within each banking system. While insurance companies and pension funds do not transmit home-country monetary policy internationally, banks do, with the direction and strength of the transmission determined by their business models and balance sheet characteristic
