‘Going agile’: Exploring the use of project management tools in fostering psychological safety in group work within management discipline courses

While psychological safety is widely acknowledged to be a crucial factor in determining how well teams function, little attention has been paid to this phenomenon in management education and HE more broadly. This highlights an important gap, given the ‘thorny’ nature, and pervasive use, of group work. We contribute the first examination of an HE intervention to increase psycho- logical safety. Specifically, through a two-phase mixed methods approach (pre/post surveys and focus groups, student diaries), we examine the implementation of Agile project management principles in both an undergraduate and postgraduate digital marketing course (total n = 131). The findings illustrate that the intervention increased psychological safety along with team- performance, group learning, interpersonal communication and creativity, whilst also reducing the free-rider problem. The study provides three contributions. First, we extend knowledge of psychological safety by showing it can be fostered through interventions providing two core antecedents (supporting facilitation and a cohesive framework). Second, we build knowledge of psychological safety in education by evidencing a greater breadth of positive outcomes, which until now has been mostly limited to knowledge development. Third, we expand understanding of implementing group work interventions in management, providing five important considerations for educational practitioners.

Integrating corporate website information into qualitative assessment for benchmarking green supply chain management practices for the chemical industry

The China’s chemical industry has been endeavoring to promote sustainable development through practicing green supply chain management (GSCM). This paper proposes a multi-criteria decision framework with twenty practices to guide companies in the industry to enact GSCM effectively. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) has been used to cluster the proposed practices. We found five aspects, including economic initiatives, environmental management, eco-design, resource recycling, and stakeholder and employee, constitute the underlying structure of GSCM. A mixed decision tool combining the entropy weight method (EWM) and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been developed and applied to identify key factors. Official website information has been collected and used to analyse the website contents of five benchmarking companies in the China’s chemical industry. The results reveal that the aspects of environmental management, eco-design and resource recycling are the most important GSCM themes. Moreover, the top five practices are top management support, performing life cycle assessment, managing environmental risks, advancing recycling technologies and integrating reverse logistics. Conceptual and practical implications are discussed.

Alternative bayesian models for genetic evaluation of biometrical, physical, and morphological reproductive traits in nelore bulls

Reproductive performance is one of the most important factors for the productive efficiency in beef cattle pro- duction. Biometric testicular and physical and morphological traits of the ejaculate are used to evaluate the reproductive performance of bulls. The phenotypic data of semen physical and morphological traits are expressed in percentage or notes, thus the evaluation of such traits through models that assume normal data distribution can be questioned. We aimed to compare the mixed models fitted under alternative and traditional Gaussian distributions for physical and morphological semen traits. Additionally to identify the most suitable model, we aimed also to predict genetic parameters for reproductive traits via Bayesian inference. Phenotypic data of 615 Nelore bulls, aged between 18 and 36 months, were used. The traits sperm motility (MOT), major (MD), minor (MID), and total (TD) sperm defects and percentage of normal spermatozoa were evaluated through Gaussian and Exponential models. For the physical traits expressed in scores, sperm vigor (VIG), and semen mass activity (MASS), the Gaussian and Poisson models were compared. Only Gaussian model was used for genetic parameters estimation of biometric testicular and seminal vesicle traits. The exponential model presented a better fit quality for MD and MID data than Gaussian model. For MASS the best model was Poisson. For all other evaluated traits, the Gaussian model presented the best fit. Heritability estimates were high for testicular biometric traits, ranging from 0.34 to 0.5. However, for the biometric measures of the seminal vesicle the heritabilitys were low (0.04 for seminal vesicle length and 0.07 for seminal vesicle width). For the morphological traits of the semen, the heritability estimates were high, ranging from 0.36 to 0.50. For the semen physical traits, the heritability estimates varied widely, from 0.04 for MOT and VIG to 0.57 for MASS. The model assumption influences the bull genetic evaluation for physical and morphological semen traits, resulting in substantial ranking differences. Improved optical and electrical properties for heterojunction solar cell using Al2O3/ITO double-layer anti-reflective coating

Silicon heterojunction solar cells have been gaining remarkable attention in the photovoltaic industry in recent years owing to their low temperature coefficient and high efficiency. This study aimed to maximize the short circuit current density (Jsc), which is directly correlated with the absorbance of the solar cells. An advanced ray tracking model and hall effect measurement was used to improve the optical properties of Al2O3/ITO as a double layered anti-reflection coating (DLARC) on the solar cell. RF/DC power sputtering system was used to deposit ITO layer, while atomic layer deposition was used to deposit Al2O3 on ITO to create a DLARC. An average decrease in reflection from 9.33% to 4.74% and enhancement in EQE from 76.89% to 84.34% were observed for the DLARC in the wavelength spectrum at 300–1100 nm. It also exhibited a higher Jsc value of 41.13 mA/cm2 and maximum conversion efficiency of 21.6%. The findings of both simulation and experiments showed that the Al2O3/ITO DLARC has better anti-reflection properties than a single-layer ITO coating.

Framing accounting for goodwill: Intractable controversies between users and standard setters

How to account for goodwill arising from business combinations has proven to be one the most controversial topics for the standardisation, preparation, and audit of financial reports. Given its contested nature, and recent debates about improper goodwill accounting by failing companies, standard setters are currently reconsidering existing recognition, measurement, and disclosure requirements. In this study, we explore the views of a relatively neglected group of stakeholders in the financial reporting policy-making arena – financial statement users. We draw on empirical evidence from interviews with financial analysts and from responses by analysts to IASB and EFRAG consultations. We mobilise framing theory as used in public policy studies to analyse how users make sense of goodwill accounting information as compared to standard setters. Our key finding is the plurality of colliding frames between users and standard setters that remain intractable. Our analysis reveals that users’ interest in management’s accountability on acquisi- tions cannot fit easily into the financial reporting frame. Not only are claims by standard setters about the value relevance of goodwill impairments found not to be experienced in practice, but also we discover that users question the benefits of standard setters working in this area, while they take recourse to ‘street numbers’ for their analysis. We interpret the intractability we discover as putting into question public policy claims that accounting policies are developed with a commitment to serve the public interest.

Management of blood products: Nursing knowledge and practices at an academic hospital

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and practice of nurses at an academic hospital regarding the handling of red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets. Methods: A descriptive study was performed using a paper-based questionnaire. Nurses from 12 wards where these products are frequently transfused were purposefully selected to participate. Results: Ninety-nine questionnaires were analysed. While 78.9 % respondents reported that their knowledge regarding the handling of RBCs and platelets was adequate, 81.7 % still stated that they would like more training on this subject. Almost half (45.2 %) reported that the time of arrival of RBCs and platelets on the ward was not charted, while 25.5 % indicated that they warm all these blood products before transfusion. About eighty percent (80.8 %) did not know where to store platelets in the ward and 37.4 % knew the average duration of a platelet transfusion. The term, blood on returnable basis was correctly interpreted by 6.1 % of respondents. Conclusion: Gaps exist in the knowledge and practice of nursing staff regarding the correct handling of RBCs and platelets, specifically discarding, storage and warming of these products. Addressing such gaps would improve patient care and contribute towards patient blood management.

Sexual-predator Detection System based on Social Behavior Biometric (SSB) Features

This study designs an online sexual predator detection system using Social Behavior Biometric (SSB) features. Social biometric focuses on extracting the pattern a user exhibits while interacting and communicating through social networks. The paper addresses the online sexual predator problem by mining the vocabulary and emotional behavior, which could assist in identifying if the user is a benign or predator. The feature-set consists of vocabulary terms that appear differently in predator and victim content. In order to strengthen the detection model, the paper also focuses on distinguishing the two classes of users based on emotions reflected in their conversation. The experiments are performed on the PAN 2012 corpus. Two datasets are created with respect to vocabulary-based and emotion-based features. The results obtained on the test set have proved that by integrating the vocabulary and emotion-based attributes, the performance of the system is significantly enhanced. While comparing, the proposed approach has outperformed top existing methods by obtaining F1, F2, and F0.5values of 0.95, 0.94, and 0.96 respectively. Furthermore, we also recorded the best accuracy compared to state-of-the-art studies for our proposed SBB-based approach with 99.86%, 99.51%, and 99.88% for Decision Tree (DT), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF) respectively.© 2021 The Authors. Assisted development process for model-based systems engineering

The system development process is becoming increasingly complex as the systems themselves become more and more complex. At the same time, the various disciplines such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and software engineering are becoming increasingly intermixed, so that companies in one discipline are experiencing leaps and bounds in the complexity of their systems and their development. For this reason, this publication presents a concept of a virtual assistant that leads through a development phase. It shows that the software supporting the development needs an information model to store the data of the developed system and to connect it with the existing knowledge. This knowledge can either be available internally or on the web. The development process should therefore support cooperation so that the assistance software and engineers interact with each other.

Intellectual engagements of accounting academics: The ‘forecasted losses intervention

This paper explores the social and political potential of accounting scholarship, presenting and discussing an intellectual intervention challenging a legislative reform that significantly affected Spanish industrial relations. In this reform, an accounting artifact (forecasted losses) played an unexpected role and was misrepresented, prompting a sizeable number of scholars to sign two manifestos in 2010 and 2012 against the use of forecasted losses made by the new legislation. As promoters of this manifesto, we perform in this paper a collaborative autoethnography to reflect on the context, events, reactions, and significance of this intervention for both the academic and the industrial relations fields. We mobilize Pierre Bourdieu’s ideas on the public intellectual to think more generally about academic engagements in the interplay between accounting, poli- cymaking, and social issues. This intervention illustrates the different manners in which admin- istrative and economic powers interfered in the Spanish accounting academic field, limiting the disposition of Spanish scholars to engage in public debates. We also interpret our engagement as mobilizing intellectual capital to expose how the notion of forecasted losses was used to produce a form of symbolic violence and how this capital is more effective as it produces messages addressed to the producers, i.e., policymakers and the judicature in this specific case.

The adoption of circular economy practices in supply chains – An assessment of European Multi-National Enterprises-2021
The European Commission Circular Economy Action Plan aims at fostering a society based on sustainable pro- duction and consumption. Within this context, industrial organisations are called to implement a wide set of practices to drive this transition: manufacturing easy-to-repair and sustainable products, adopting solutions aimed at extending product lifetime, and promoting remanufacturing and materials’ recycling. A major contribution is expected from Multi-National Enterprises (MNEs), as these organizations dominate the European economy and coordinate resource-intensive global supply networks. As such, this study assesses the Circular Economy-inspired initiatives promoted by the largest European MNEs. The content of sustainability reports is scrutinised, through a template analysis technique, in order to create a database of Circular Economy practices. Key findings include the degree of implementation, the level of involvement of supply chain partners, and the drivers behind the implementation of such practices. Furthermore, a conceptual framework is proposed, in order to describe the adoption of Circular Economy practices as a supply chain process. A theoretical discussion explores the role of institutional pressures and supply chain integration to shape the transition towards the adoption of Circular Economy practices in global supply chains.
