1 The relationship between syntactic complexity and rhetorical move-steps in research article introductions: Variation among four social science and engineering disciplines
رابطه پیچیدگی نحوی و گام‌های حرکت بلاغی در مقدمه‌های مقاله پژوهشی: تنوع در میان چهار رشته علوم اجتماعی و مهندسی-2021
This study investigates disciplinary variation in the relationship between syntactic complexity and rhetorical move-steps in research article (RA) introductions. Our data consisted of the introduction sections of 400 published RAs in two core social science disciplines, Anthropology and Sociology, and two core engineering disciplines, Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Each sample was manually annotated for rhetorical move-steps using an adapted version of Swales’ (2004) revised Create a Research Space model and assessed for syntactic complexity using multiple measures of global complexity, finite subordination, clausal elaboration, and phrasal complexity. Our results revealed significant disciplinary variation in terms of the syntactic complexity of sentences realizing each of six rhetorical move-steps commonly found in RA introductions. Our findings contribute to the emerging understanding of disciplinary variation in function-form mappings in RA writing and have useful implications for genre-based academic writing research and pedagogy.

2 Analyzing students’ writing in a Jamaican Creole-speaking context: An ecological and systemic functional approach
تحلیل مهارت نوشتن دانشجویان جامائیکایی در زمینه صحبت به زبان انگلیسی مخلوط: یک دیدگاه بومی و کارکردی سیتماتیک-2018
This article examines the language and literacy practices of Creole English-speaking children in Jamaica. Situating the study within an ecological framework, we use a systemic functional linguistic (SFL) approach to analyze students’ writing in two Jamaican schools. Data collection included interviews with teachers, classroom observations, instructional materials, and focal students’ writing samples. Data analyses revealed vastly different language ecologies between the schools owing to sharp socioeconomic stratification, the structural organization of schools, and the pervasiveness of standard language ideology, which stigmatizes Jamaican Creole (JC) and privileges Standard Jamaican English (SJE) in schools. Functional analysis of students’ writing showed that the nature of the writing tasks at the schools created different affordances for exploiting lexico-grammatical choices for meaning making – enhancing them in the case of one school but severely restricting them in the case of another – perpetuating the academic disadvantage for JC speakers. Recommendations for structural and attitudinal changes through teacher training and implementation of approaches that engage students’ bidialectal competence for learning are made as important first steps towards addressing educational inequities in Jamaican schools.

3 A genre-inspired and lexico-grammatical approach for helping postgraduate students craft research grant proposals
رویکرد سبک الهام گرفته و لغوی-دستوری برای کمک به طرح کمک مالی تحقیقات دانشجویان کارشناسی ارشد صنایع دستی-2016
Nowadays, there is increasing pressure on academic staff and their postgraduate students to publish in prestigious high-impact journals. It is therefore not surprising to find that academic writing programs are increasingly targeting English for Research Publication Processes (ERPP), in particular the research article (RA) genre. Grant proposal writing is another important high-stakes genre as getting a research article published is often dependent on being awarded a grant to undertake the research project in the first place. However, this “behind-the-scenes” genre has not received much attention in the ESP literature, either from a research or pedagogic perspective. This article describes the design and implementation of a research grant proposal writing module offered to postgraduate students of science and engineering. The materials are very much influenced by the research findings on grant proposal writing and adopt a Swalesian genre-based approach to the pedagogy. Tasks in which students match lexico-grammatical patterning to specific move structures are also outlined. At the same time, I also briefly raise two issues related to lexico-grammar, i.e. the question of novice writers’ language re-use from corpus re- sources and the identification of ELF-type language in academic writing, important aspects which merit more attention and reflection for ESP courses targeted at scholarly writing.© 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
