1 AI-based self-service technology in public service delivery: User experience and influencing factors

Public sectors are utilizing AI-based self-service technology (SST) at an accelerating rate, given its potential for improving work efficiency and user experience, reducing service costs, and relieving human workloads. However, there is a limited understanding of the factors influencing citizens user experience when services supported by AI-based SST are provided. Thus, with insights from the Consumer Value Theory, this paper aims to explore the factors that are important to AI-based SST user experience and the conditional role of trust in government. The on-site survey of 379 citizens in a public service center in China indicates that user experience positively relates to personalization and aesthetics and negatively associates with perceived time spent on the AIbased self-service machines. In addition, the results suggest that citizens with more trust in government are more likely to have a pleasant experience coming from AI-based SSTs personalization and aesthetics. Public managers should ensure that the AI-based SST is aesthetically appealing and should be able to personalize the delivery of the right contents to the right person at the right time. Furthermore, they should always prioritize cultivating more trust from citizens to achieve a more positive user experience.

2 Copper plasmonic metamaterial glazing for directional thermal energy management

In recent years, transparent solar technology has attracted increasing attention, which has the potential to let many of the surfaces of our buildings environment be turned into solar harvesting arrays without impacting their function or aesthetics. Glazing with nanostructured surface possessing different solar absorption ability from different directions is studied currently as a route to reduce the environmental cost of keeping appropriate indoor temperature. Here a transparent and solar thermal metasurface based on low cost copper plasmonic nanostructures is proposed and a maximum 25% difference in absorption from different sides is demonstrated experimentally. The spectra show strong activity in the infrared and still have transparency for visible light, which can be further improved by optimizing the structures according to the simulations. These materials are suitable as an alternative design of window glazing for energy saving.

3 Using an AI creativity system to explore how aesthetic experiences are processed along the brain’s perceptual neural pathways

With the increased sophistication of AI techniques, the application of these systems has been expanding to ever newer fields. Increasingly, these systems are being used in modeling of human aesthetics and creativity, e.g. how humans create artworks and design products. Our lab has developed one such AI creativity deep learning system that can be used to create artworks in the form of images and videos. In this paper, we describe this system and its use in studying the human visual system and the formation of aesthetic experiences. Specifically, we show how time-based AI created media can be used to explore the nature of the dual-pathway neuro-architecture of the human visual system and how this relates to higher cognitive judgments such as aesthetic experiences that rely on these divergent information streams. We propose a theoretical framework for how the movement within percepts such as video clips, causes the engagement of reflexive attention and a subsequent focus on visual information that are primarily processed via the dorsal stream, thereby modulating aesthetic experiences that rely on information relayed via the ventral stream. We outline our recent study in support of our proposed framework, which serves as the first study that investigates the relationship between the two visual streams and aesthetic experiences.

4 Building facade multi-objective optimization for daylight and aesthetical perception

In recent years, especially in a building envelope, parametric design provides a method of continuous deformation of façade patterns until the architect finds interesting patterns or shapes that satisfy the desired aesthetics. However, these new design methods pose a question regarding the reasoning behind them, and sometimes the aesthetic interest dominates the true function of the envelope system and contrasts it. In opposite, too much engineering in the envelope system creates a problem with the identity of the façade. The purpose of this paper is to propose a method to integrate two different performances, quality and quantity, into one measurable goal. Using an existing buildings facade as a case study, the buildings facade was analyzed to understand the architects logic behind its design. Then the found logic was programmed into the tool that allowed for the morphing of the façade into a different configuration, which can be evaluated by both quality and quantity performance to find the better solution to satisfy both goals. For the purpose of this paper, multi-objective evolutionary algorithms were considered to find solutions. For a quantitative objective, the indoor daylight availability was used as a measurement to allow for the best daylighting performance envelope system. For a qualitative objective, a matrix was developed to find the users design preference and used it to evaluate and find a quantitative performance goal. The proposed method provides building facades that satisfy daylighting performance, and most importantly, it allows users to match their aesthetic sensibilities with the design preference.

5 The tourism experience-led length of stay hypothesis

Even given the continuing interest of both academia and industry to understand what accounts for the length of stay (LOS) of tourists, explanatory variables have mostly been limited to socio-demographic and trip characteristics overlooking the influence of the holiday experience despite it being a major reason why tourism is embarked on. Departing from previous studies, this study proposed and tested an experience-led length of stay hypothesis employing a zero truncated negative binomial regression model. It was revealed that tourism experience significantly explains the variations in tourists’ LOS with self development, recreational engage ments, hospitality, weather and sanitation identified as specific determinants. The findings also provide support for age, nationality, travel party size, budget, number of international trips, and risk taking behaviour as significant determinants of LOS. With these observations in mind, the study offers practical insights for sustaining tourists’ length of stay as well as propositions for future research on the tourism experience-led length of stay hypothesis. Management implications: Provision of positive memorable experiences in the domains of self development, recreation, hospitality, weather and aesthetics is one way to ensure that tourists stay longer. Specifically, need exits for destination management organisations and service providers to step up efforts in maintaining sanitation at the destination, especially at attraction sites and tourism-related premises. They can do this by ensuring regular cleaning, providing well-designated trash cans and disposing of sewage properly. In addition, a diverse of novel activities should be made available to tourists to sustain their interest and prolong their stay. Activity engagements that allow for skill acquisition such as volunteerism, cultural immersion (i.e. food bazaars) and co-creation of services are recommended.

6 Transforming small towns by remedial street design

The basic principle for a proper road design is a balanced consideration of the factors capacity and safety adapted in an environment friendly context. This approach, generally adopted in the case of interurban road projects is also applicable to small urban localities. In a remedial street design plan the factor “environment” needs to be examined in close relation with road safety and traffic capacity at the design stage. The aim of the new tendency in urban road network re-design is to find solutions that meet the need of society to move easily and safely, all by providing a pleasant natural background. In this paper, basic principles for the re-design of street networks combining safe mobility with friendly environment and aesthetics are presented. This model for street re-design was applied to three small towns of the Prefecture of Phthia, to face serious traffic and environment problems. Accordingly, the formulated proposal moved towards a holistic consideration of the urban road space and the related activities, operations and peculiarities. The accent was given to concrete but applicable measures to accommodate and assist the varying needs of citizens for mobility providing a street network that is driven calmly enhancing the surrounding environment.

7 A matter of perspective: Design newness and its performance effects

Several studies suggest that products with a distinctive exterior design outperform products without differentiating aesthetics. So far, a products design newness has been assessed by a comparison to the design of competing products. Drawing on categorization theory, we argue that two additional perspectives are important: design newness with respect to the products brand portfolio and that with respect to the products predecessor. Results of an em pirical study in the domain of cars confirm that all three perspectives of design newness have different and significant sales effects. Consumers tolerance for newness is found to be most conservative within the predecessor perspective, followed by moderate levels of newness in the brand portfolio perspective and high levels in the competitor perspective. To maximize per formance, manufacturers should therefore develop designs that have high novelty compared to the competitive set and are moderately novel compared to the brands product portfolio and to the preceding model generation. A second empirical application in the context of smart phones confirms these findings.

یکی از راه حل های طراحی ساختاری مهیج برای ساختمان های پایدار توسط طرح ساختاری شبکه-مورب(شبکه ی قطری) پذیرفته شده است. شبکه مورب که با یک پیکربندی ساختاری پیرامونی، توسط شبکه ی باریکی از بخش های قطری شامل مقاومت به بارهای جانبی و گرانشی شناسایی می شود، به عنوان روند طراحی نوین برای ساختارهای پیچیده ی بلند در حال ظهور است، و به علت عملکرد ساختاری و زیباشناسی بطور فزاینده ای در حال محبوب شدن است. از آنجاکه این روش نیازمند فولاد ساختاری کمتری نسبت به قاب فولادی مرسوم است، ساختار پایدارتری را فراهم می آورد. مطالعه ی پیش رو با استفاده از تحلیل های غیرخطی FEM بر عملکرد ساختاری ساختمان بلند فولادی تمرکز دارد. مقایسه ی عددی بین سیستم بست مرسوم و پیکربندی های شبکه مورب مختلف (با سه گرایش شبکه مورب مختلف) برای یک ساختمان با 40 طبقه، با ارتفاع کلی 160 متر، و قاعده ی 36 متر در 36 متر ارائه شده است. پایداری ساختمان (به لحاظ صرفه جویی در وزن فولاد ساختاری) به همراه رفتار ساختاری ارزیابی شده است. کلیدواژه: ساختارهای شبکه مورب | ساختمان های بلند | FEM | توسعه ی پایدار | معیار طراحی
