1 Intelligent energy management system for conventional autonomous vehicles

Autonomous vehicles have been envisioned to increase vehicle safety, primarily via the reduction of accidents. However, their design could also affect the vehicle travel demand and energy consumption. Although battery-powered electric and hybrid-electric autonomous vehicles assume more widespread use than conventional autonomous vehicles, energy management is harder and more significant for conventional autonomous vehicles. As such, it is necessary to investigate how to manage energy consumption in conventional autonomous vehicles. In this paper, an energy management system is constructed and analyzed by using a road-power-demand model and an intelligent system to reduce fuel consumption for a conventional autonomous vehicle. The road-power-demand model utilizes three impact factors (i) environment-conditions (ii) driver-behavior, and (iii) vehicle-specifications. The proposed intelligent energy management system includes a fuzzy-logic-system with the aim of generating the desired engine torque, based on the vehicle road power demand and a PID controller to control the air/fuel ratio, by changing the throttle angle. Results show that the intelligent energy management system reduces the vehicle energy consumption from 7.2 to 6.71 L/100 km. Next, the parameters of the fuzzy-logic-system are intelligently optimized by the particle-swarm-optimization method and new results indicate that the vehicle energy consumption is reduced by around 9.58%.

2 Blockchain for 5G-enabled IoT for industrial automation: A systematic review, solutions, and challenges

Internet-of-Things (IoT) has made ubiquitous computing a reality by extending Internet connectivity in various applications deployed across the globe. IoT connect billions of objects together for high speed data transfer especially in 5G-enabled industrial environment during information collection and processing. Most of the issues such as access control mechanism, time to fetch the data from different devices and protocols used may not be applicable infor future applications as these protocols are based upon a centralized architecture. This centralized architecture may have a single point of failure alongwith the computational overhead. So, there is a need for an efficient decentralized access control mechanism for device-to-device (D2D) communication in various industrial sectors IoTenabled industrial automation. In such an environment, security and privacy preservation are major concerns as most of the solutions are based upon the centralized architecture. To mitigate the aforementioned issues, in this paper, we present an in-depth survey of stateof- the-art proposals having 5G-enabled IoT as a backbone for blockchain-based industrial automation for the applications such as-Smart city, Smart Home, Healthcare 4.0, Smart Agriculture, Autonomous vehicles and Supply chain management. From the existing proposals, it has been observed that blockchain can revolutionize most of the current and future industrial applications in different sectors by providing a fine-grained decentralized access control. Various transactions and database logs can be traced efficiently using blockchain for consistency and preivacy preservation in the aforementiioned industrial sectors. The open issues and challenges of 5G-enabled IoT for blockchain-based Industrial automation are also analyzed in the text. Finally, a comparison of existing proposals with respect to various parameters is presented which allows the end users to select one of the proposals in comparison to its merits over the others.

3 Deep learning models for traffic flow prediction in autonomous vehicles: A review, solutions, and challenges

In the last few years, there has been an exponential increase in the usage of the autonomous vehicles across the globe. It is due to an exponential increase in the popularity and usage of the artificial intelligence techniques in various applications. Traffic flow predication is important for autonomous vehicles using which they decide their itinerary and take adaptive decisions (for example, turn let or right, move straight, lane change, stop, or accelerate) with respect to their surrounding objects. From the existing literature, it has been observed that research on autonomous vehicles has shifted from the traditional statistical models to adaptive machine learning techniques. However, existing machine learning models may not be directly applicable in this environment due to non-linear complex relationship between spatial and temporal data collected from the surroundings during the aforementioned adaptive decisions taken by the vehicles. So, with focus on these issues, in this article, we explore various deep learning models for traffic flow prediction in autonomous vehicles and compared these models with respect to their applicability in modern smart transportation systems. Various parameters are chosen to have a relative comparison among different deep learning models. Moreover, challenges and future research directions are also discussed in the article.

4 Internet of Vehicles in Big Data Era

As the rapid development of automotive telematics, modern vehicles are expected to be connected through heterogeneous radio access technologies and are able to exchange massive information with their surrounding environment. By significantly expanding the network scale and conducting both real-time and long-term information processing, the traditional Vehicular AdHoc Networks (VANETs) are evolving to the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), which promises efficient and intelligent prospect for the future transportation system. On the other hand, vehicles are not only consuming but also generating a huge amount and enormous types of data, which is referred to as Big Data. In this article, we first investigate the relationship between IoV and big data in vehicular environment, mainly on how IoV supports the transmission, storage, computing of the big data, and how IoV benefits from big data in terms of IoV characterization, performance evaluation and big data assisted communication protocol design. We then investigate the application of IoV big data in autonomous vehicles. Finally, the emerging issues of the big data enabled IoV are discussed.

به لطفِ مزایای فراوان نسبت به خودروهای مرسوم، خودروهای بدون سرنشین (AVها) در سیستم حمل ونقل آینده نقش مهمی را برعهده خواهند داشت. از آنجاییکه AVها معمولاً خودروهای برقی (EVها) هستند، می توانند به سرویسهای خودرو-به-شبکه (V2G) کمک کنند. اگرچه عموماً دیکته کردن مسیرهای EV ممکن نیست، با این حال می توانیم برنامه هایی برای سفرِ AV طراحی کنیم تا برخی اهدافِ سیستم شمول ارضا شوند. در این مقاله، برروی AVهایی که به دنبال پارکینگ هستند تمرکز می کنیم و این موضوع را که، در راستای پشتیبانی از سرویسهای V2G، چطور می توان آنها را به تاسیساتِ پارکینگِ مناسب هدایت کرد، مطالعه می کنیم. ما مساله را بصورت یک مساله ی خطی عددصحیح (ILP) فرمولیزه می کنیم. این مساله می-تواند توسط یک حل کننده ی استانداردِ ILP حل شود، اما ممکن است که زمانِ محاسباتی زیادی که برای آن نیاز است، در سناریوهای عملی قابل پذیرش نباشد. جهت غلبه بر این مساله، یک هیورستیکِ کارآمدتر نیز می سازیم. جهتِ مطالعه ی زوایای دید متفاوت برای حل مساله، ما شبیه سازی های گسترده ای را اجرا می کنیم. نتایج شبیه سازی آشکار می کنند که هیورستیک، با یک تنزل کیفیتِ قابل اغماض در مقدارِ تابعِ هزینه ، می-تواند زمان محاسبات را به اندازه قابل توجهی کاهش دهد. کیفیتِ پاسخِ بهینه نسبت به تعدادِ تاسیساتِ پارکینگِ دردسترس حساس نیست. یک مقیاسِ زمانیِ زمخت تر می تواند زمان محاسبات را بهبود دهد، اما کیفیت پاسخ را پایین می آورد که این می تواند منجر به یک پاسخِ غیرامکان پذیر شود.

6 Information Management of Demand-responsive Mobility Service Based on Autonomous Vehicles

The autonomous road vehicle (AV) technology implies significant alteration of urban mobility services. The identified transit modes based on AVs are the individual cars, the demand-responsive public transportation with small or medium sized pods and the high capacity public transportation on arterial routes. The introduction of the telematics-based, shared, demand responsive mobility service requires new information management methods. Accordingly, the aim of our research was to model the structure and the operation of this rather complex information system considering both the operators and the users. Since the passenger functions are the keys of the advanced information service the conceptual plan of the mobile application with personalized functions has been also elaborated. The research questions were: how the architecture and the functions of the information system are to be modelled, what the novel information management functions of passengers and operators are, what data structure is needed and how it is related to the functions as well as what kind of functions are to be realized in the mobile application. The results are applicable as foundations for innovation and development projects aiming realization of either the back-end or the front-end components and for planning information management processes.

7 50 years of rovers for planetary exploration: A retrospective review for future directions

To this end, a comprehensive study with a representative collection of 100 mobile robots along the history was performed for which a robot’s statistical profile was obtained considering aspects such as weight, size, number of wheels, and speed of movement. In addition, an exhaustive bibliometric analysis has been conducted over 8120 contributions between 1963 and 2015. The study on the scientific literature found that, thought mobile robotics is a research field being displaced by other disciplines of higher scientific return (e.g., humanoid robots, unmanned aircraft systems or intelligent autonomous vehicles), it is nevertheless confirmed the continuity of mobile robotics with the aim of developing advanced science at the expense of forthcoming space exploration missions. Therefore, this paper attempts to address what is the current state-of-the-art and what are the future challenges set in mobile robotics.© 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

8 Auction-based tolling systems in a connected and automated vehicles environment: Public opinion and implications for toll revenue and capacity utilization

Autonomous and connected vehicles are expected to enable new tolling mechanisms, such as auction-based tolls, for allocating the limited roadway capacity. This research examines the public perception of futuristic auction-based tolling systems, with a focus on the public acceptance of such systems over current tolling practices on highways (e.g., dynamic and fixed tolling methodologies). Through a stated-preference survey, responses from 159 road-users residing in Virginia are elicited to understand route choice behavior under a descending price auction implemented on a hypothetical two-route network. Analysis of the survey data shows that there is no outright rejection of the presented auction-based tolling among those who are familiar with the current tolling methods. While males strongly support the new method, no clear pattern emerges among other demographic variables such as income and education level, and age. While high income respondents and regular commuters are more likely to pay higher tolls, no statistical significance between different genders, age groups, household sizes, and education levels is found. Based on the modeling results and the hypothetical road network, it is found that descend ing price tolling method yields higher average toll rates, and generates at least 70% more revenue when travel time saving is 30 min, and improves capacity utilization of the toll road significantly compared to fixed tolls.

10 Training My Car to See using Virtual Worlds

Computer vision technologies are at the core of different advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and will play a key role in oncoming autonomous vehicles too. One of the main challenges for such technologies is to perceive the driving environment, i.e. to detect and track relevant driving information in a reliable manner (e.g. pedestrians in the vehicle route, free space to drive through). Nowadays it is clear that machine learning techniques are essential for developing such a visual perception for driving. In particular, the standard working pipeline consists of collecting data (i.e. on-board images), manually annotating the data (e.g. drawing bounding boxes around pedestrians), learning a discriminative data representation taking advantage of such annotations (e.g. a deformable part-based model, a deep convolutional neural network), and then assessing the reliability of such representation with the acquired data. In the last two decades most of the research efforts focused on representation learning (first, designing descriptors and learning classifiers; later doing it end-to-end). Hence, collecting data and, especially, annotating it, is essential for learning good representations. While this has been the case from the very beginning, only after the disruptive appearance of deep convolutional neural networks it became a serious issue due to their data hungry nature. In this context, the problem is that manual data annotation is a tiresome work prone to errors. Accordingly, in the late 00’s we initiated a research line consisting in training visual models using photo-realistic computer graphics, especially focusing on assisted and autonomous driving. In this paper, we summarize such a work and show how it has become a new tendency with increasing acceptance.
