1 Remanufacturing with upgrade PSS for new sustainable business models

Starting from mid ‘90s, Eco-efficient Product Service Systems (PSSs) were indicated in literature as enablers toward a more sustainable and resource-efficient industry through re-use and remanufacturing. In this regard, academicians and practitioners outlined several advantages (environmental and economic) but also many barriers hindering their implementation, such as market acceptance and economic sustainability. Thus, the diffusion of re-use and remanufacturing PSS is currently limited and mainly restricted to markets accepting also out-dated products (e.g. B2B or emerging countries). To cope with this limitation, product upgrade in re-manufacturing was recently introduced. Upgrade cycles allow embedding technological innovation into products while remanufacturing, thus reaching advanced performances and satisfying evolving customers’ preferences over time. If coupled with the offering of advanced services, remanufacturing with upgrade would open the way to new disruptive PSSs able to revolution customers’ consumption behaviour, as well as the manufacturing business model of companies. The new remanufacturing with upgrade business models will make remanufacturing one of the main pillars of companies’ business value generation, allowing improved management of technology cycles and of products obsolescence. Thus, overall economic and environmental benefits will be maximised. However, the implementation of such business models represents a challenge for manufacturers. The evolution from a pure manufacturing towards a manufacturing/remanufacturing company, together with the transition from a product to a service-based offering, entails considerable changes in all the business model variables. Drawing on the theory of business model innovation process, incremental or radical innovation paths can be hypothesised for this transition. Despite the focus of recent research on Product Service Systems and on Circular Economy, remanufacturing-with-upgrade business models are rarely cited in literature and there is limited empirical evidence of companies having embraced them. To set the research framework in alignment with previous theory, this paper proposes a structured definition and configuration of innovative remanufacturing-with-upgrade business models. By looking at existing examples of companies having undertaken this type of business model innovation, different typologies of remanufacturing and upgrade business models are proposed. Companies were classified according to the identified PSS typologies and conclusions are derived, together with future research perspectives.© 2018 CIRP.

2 Prescriptive analytics: Literature review and research challenges

Business analytics aims to enable organizations to make quicker, better, and more intelligent decisions with the aim to create business value. To date, the major focus in the academic and industrial realms is on descriptive and predictive analytics. Nevertheless, prescriptive analytics, which seeks to find the best course of action for the future, has been increasingly gathering the research interest. Prescriptive analytics is often considered as the next step towards increasing data analytics maturity and leading to optimized decision making ahead of time for business performance improvement. This paper investigates the existing literature pertaining to prescriptive analytics and prominent methods for its implementation, provides clarity on the research field of prescriptive analytics, synthesizes the literature review in order to identify the existing research challenges, and outlines directions for future research.

3 Fostering Corporate Entrepreneurship with the use of social media tools

The strategic use of Social Media can leverage innovation, relationships with customers, and the entrepreneurial orientation of the firm, as it provides useful knowledge to find new opportunities for innovation. Despite the relevance of this phenomenon to current hyper-competitive environments, empirical research on the topic re- mains scarce. To advance knowledge of this issue, the main purpose of the paper is to examine how Social Media use impacts the different dimensions of Corporate Entrepreneurship. Building on a sample of 201 technological firms, findings confirm that the use of Social Media tools impacted all dimensions of Corporate Entrepreneurship and enhanced firm performance. This paper contributes to the literature by empirically confirming how Social Media use helps to create business value. The study results also have important implications for managers, as they show the pathway managers must follow to harness the benefits of Social Media use to become more entrepreneurial.

4 Firm-level capabilities towards big data value creation

Big data has played an increasingly important role in using data to improve business value. In response to several big data challenges, the purpose of this study is to identify firm-level capabilities required to create value from big data. The adjacent theories of business process management and IT business value underpinned the study, together with an in-depth case study that led to the identification of twenty-four types of capabilities related to IT, process, performance, human, strategic, and organizational practices. The findings confirmed the application of practices and capabilities of adjacent theories, as well as certain practices and attributes that were both changed and reinforced at the intersection of big data. As an outstanding additional support to the extant big data studies, this work empirically confirms and portrays hitherto unexplored capabilities of big data and set their roles, thus providing a holistic overview of firm-level capabilities that are required for big data value creation.

5 Leveraging internet of things and big data analytics initiatives in European and American firms: Is data quality a way to extract business value?

Big data analytics (BDA) and the Internet of Things (IoT) tools are considered crucial investments for firms to distinguish themselves among competitors. Drawing on a strategic management perspective, this study proposes that BDA and IoT capabilities can create significant value in business processes if supported by a good level of data quality, which will lead to a better competitive advantage. Responses are collected from 618 European and American firms that use IoT and BDA applications. Partial least squares results reveal that better data quality is needed to unlock the value of IoT and BDA capabilities.

6 Business value of big data analytics: A systems-theoretic approach and empirical test

Although big data analytics have been widely considered a key driver of marketing and innovation processes, whether and how big data analytics create business value has not been fully understood and empirically validated at a large scale. Taking social media analytics as an example, this paper is among the first attempts to theoretically explain and empirically test the market performance impact of big data analytics. Drawing on the systems theory, we explain how and why social media analytics create super-additive value through the synergies in functional complementarity between social media diversity for gathering big data from diverse social media channels and big data analytics for analyzing the gathered big data. Furthermore, we deepen our theorizing by considering the difference between small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and large firms in the required integration effort that enables the synergies of social media diversity and big data analytics. In line with this theorizing, we empirically test the synergistic effect of social media diversity and big data analytics by using a recent large-scale survey data set from 18,816 firms in Italy. We find that social media diversity and big data analytics have a positive interaction effect on market performance, which is more salient for SMEs than for large firms.

7 Big data analytics for supply chain relationship in banking

This paper reports how a commercial bank in Asia uses big data analytic as a tool to explore the internal B2B data to improve supply chain finance and the efficiency of marketing tactics and campaigns. A case study was conducted by analyzing two types of supply chain relationships: (1) supply chain relationships in the credit reports; (2) e-wiring transactions among supply chain companies. The results show that big data analytics is very useful in terms of improving the commercial banks marketing and risk management performances. The case study also set a good example for B2B firms seeking to understand how they could leverage big data analytics to differentiate customer solutions, sustain profitability and generate new business values. Theorical and practical implications are also discussed.

8 Risk management in SMEs: A systematic literature review and future directions

Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are considered as the backbone of European economics and growth; however, their peculiar features and the limited resources drive them to adopt different tools and methods when compared to large companies. In particular, the approach adopted in SMEs for Risk Management (RM) seems not to be specifically studied and understood. To this extent, the aim of the paper is to outline the development and the state of the art of RM in SMEs, grasping new future research opportunities in this field. By conducting a systematic literature review with bibliometric tools, 61 papers published until the end of 2016 have been selected and analysed. They demonstrate that some RM streams, such as financial RM and Enterprise RM, are among the most studied in the literature. However, a holistic approach is still not diffused nor sufficiently developed in SMEs, even if the types of identified risks are increasing. There are new emerging RM streams. In particular, the relevance of Project RM, Strategic RM, and Supply Chain RM has been increasing, and it pushes researchers and practitioners to deepen the knowledge of the tools and practices that characterise them. New theoretical and practical studies on RM in SMEs will support them in protecting their business and leveraging their business value, taking advantage of the management of different types of risks.© 2019 Elsevier Ltd. 9 A new model to compare intelligent asset management platforms (IAMP)

Nowadays, no business activity escapes the fourth industrial revolution, called industry 4.0, which is characterized by digitalization of processes. The possibility of simultaneously having systems with greater interconnection, more information and greater flexibility, allows companies to have a clearer view of their processes and consequently improve their effectiveness and efficiency. The digital transformation can no longer be based simply on making the processes more efficient, but on creating more sustainable and profitable customer relationships, continuously aligning the value of the product with the changing customer requirements. Even though managing assets over the Internet is increasingly common, much effort is needed to identify the functionality that should be provided by these platforms to enhance existing asset management practices. The effort of IT vendors is focused on the development of IoT platforms, which allow, among other functions, to create a connection between machinery and digital systems, protect all devices and data against hacking or attacks, control operations and maintenance of equipment or perform different analyses of assets or systems. The aim of this paper is to understand the functionalities of the existing IAMP platforms, providing a system that evaluates these functionalities based on the business objectives from the point of view of asset management. This methodology allows maintenance managers guiding the evolution of the life cycle of their assets according to the business value conception. This makes this methodology especially suitable for supporting new challenging scenarios of maintenance management. In this paper we first talk about the structure of an IAMP, then how they integrate the asset management model and a summary of the features and modules that have the most known IAMP platforms. Finally, an evaluation system of IAMP platforms and a case study is presented based on their content for asset management. Copyright © 2020 The Authors. 10 Demystifying blockchain: A critical analysis of challenges, applications and opportunities

The blockchain is considered to be the potential driver of the digital economy. The Blockchain technology outweighs the challenges associated with the traditional transaction business governed and regulated by the third trusted party. There is a growth in the interest among the researchers, the industry, and the academia to study and leverage the potential of Blockchain. Blockchain provides a decentralized and distributed public ledger for all the participating parties. Though it seems that blockchain is a viable choice and solution for all the centralized governed and regulated transactions (in digital online space), it has potential challenges that need to be resolved; opportunities to be explored, and applications to be studied. This paper utilizes a systematic lit- erature review to study several research endeavors made in the domain of blockchain. To further research on blockchain adoption, the paper theoretically constructs an integrated framework of the blockchain innovation adoption process in an organization considering organizational and user acceptance perspectives. This would facilitate its widespread adoption, thereby achieving sustained leadership solutions. The paper offers 23 pro- positions to information systems (IS)/information management (IM) scholars with respect to innovation char- acteristics, organizational characteristics, environmental characteristics, and user acceptance characteristics. Further, the paper explores several areas of future research and directions that can provide deep insights for overcoming challenges and for the adoption of blockchain technology.
