21 Fashion without pollution: How consumers evaluate brands after an NGO campaign aimed at reducing toxic chemicals in the fashion industry
This research analyzes the effects on consumer responses of an NGO campaign (Greenpeace’s 2011 Detox campaign), aimed at reducing toxic chemicals in the manufacturing processes and final products of fashion brands. The proposed model explains and tests the mechanisms underlying negative consumer reactions to the fashion brands that are the focus of NGO campaigns. The findings illustrate the mediating role that consumers’ evaluations of brand blame play in their attitude towards such brands and subse quent purchase intentions. Two relevant moderators e (1) consumer reasons for justifying brands’ un ethical behavior in the market and (2) the decision of certain brands to comply with the NGO campaign’s requests e play a significant part in the mediation mechanism. These findings make original contribu tions to theory and have important implications for consumers, companies, and NGOs, because they provide fresh insights into understanding, and handling effectively, consumer reactions to NGO cam paigns aimed at reducing the use of toxic chemicals in the fashion industry.

22 Reputational risks and participation in flood risk management and the public debate about the 2013 flood in Germany
Stakeholder participation is seen to be integral for the improvement of flood risk management. In many cases, however, participation in flood risk management practice has also become a space of conflict and debate. In order to better understand these conflicts, this paper focuses on the interplay between the practices of participation which seek to improve the management of first order risks such as floods and second order reputational risks which arise as a consequence of arguments about participation in political and publicised discourses. Our analysis draws on empirical data related to the experience of the 2013 flood, which affected large parts of eastern and south-western Germany. The empirical data was gathered in Saxony and includes interviews conducted with citizens and experts involved in participatory processes in flood risk management as well as analysis of newspaper articles published during and directly after the 2013 flood. The analysis found that practices of participation in flood risk management are highly politicised in Saxony and Germany in general. The basic argument that surfaced in the aftermath of the 2013 flood was that because some groups were very powerful and active in pursuing their individual interests during participatory processes, the planning and construction of technical measures took too long to provide some communities with protection against the flood and hence increased their overall susceptibility. As a consequence of this public blaming of participation for the damages that occurred in 2013, the very structure of participatory processes as well as the right of actors to participate in flood risk management were questioned. The paper concludes that the interplay of institutionalised practices of participation and public and media-related discourses about participation stand in close connection in Saxony. The institutional setting only allows for very limited participation in decision-making processes and, at the same time, provides the possibility for responsible administrations to delegate responsibility and blame to those stakeholders participating in risk management in case ‘‘something goes wrong’’.© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. 23 Becoming a network beyond boundaries: Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMIs) as the actor-networks after the internet of things
For the last few decades, actor-network theory has been usually criticized for its focus on Machiavellian human actors controlling the overall networking between other actors or blamed for its dissipation of human agencies within the global status of a network. However, at the moment of its development, the freshness of actor-network theory was more relevant to its focus on the meaning of what the hyphen signifies; not so much just a simple connection between two independent variables, but an ontological event itself, from which certain entities juxtaposed together become involved by exchanging stable in fluences each other thus settled down as the actors participating in a network being associated as the summing up of these settled influences. The aim of this paper is to refresh this bygone freshness of ANT from the recent development of the Internet of Things (IoT); which vividly exemplifies how a network and its actors are generated from a manifold technologically augmented entitiesdsuch as smart appli ances in a house, migratory animals with RFID tags, and ensembles of neurons signaling beyond ones brain through a bundle of microwiresdeach of which is physiologically or algorithmically adaptable to the environmental signals from other entities thus able to be settled down together into “new sensor/ processor/actuator affiliations.” Brain-Machine Interface (BMI), developed by Nicolelis Lab at Duke University as a prototype of the future neuroprosthetics, shows a specific example of these networks of things; in which mutual adaptations of the technologically augmented entitiesdnamely neurons and robot limbsdassociate artificial sensory-motor circuits, programming its human/animal users possible motor behaviors as well as their motor intentions.

24 Tree Seed and Seedling Supply Systems: A Review of the Asia, Africa and Latin America Models
The paper reviews tree seed and seedling supply systems in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America. Across these regions, the review found that some of the germplasm supply systems do not efficiently meet farmers’ demands and environmental expectations in terms of productivity, species and genetic diversity. In some countries, germplasm used is mostly sourced from undocumented sources and often untested. Germplasm quality control systems are only found in a few countries. Appreciation of the value of tree germplasm of high genetic quality is low. Non-government organisations (NGOs) in many African countries play a prominent role in the supply of germplasm which is usually given to farmers without charge. The practice of giving farmers free germplasm by NGOs in many African countries and also government participation in germplasm supply in some Asian countries has been blamed for crowding out private entrepreneurs, although this is not substantiated by any evidence to suggest that the smallholder farmers are willing and able to pay for the germplasm. In some Latin American countries, private companies, government and NGOs provide farmers tree germplasm in a partnership in which farmers provide land and labour in return. Overall, tree germplasm markets are large in Asia, due in part to large afforestation programs, intermediate in Latin America and small in Africa where smallholder farmers constitute the market. In countries where germplasm quality control is practiced, it is either through a legal framework or voluntary. A few countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America have developed protocols for certification of tree seeds based on the OECD. Some germplasm suppliers use branding as a way of differentiating their germplasm as having superior quality. To enhance the use of high quality germplasm, there is a need to demonstrate the value of using such germplasm and raise awareness of germplasm quality among the farmers and policy-makers. 25 Children’s Perceptions of Poverty
This article explores children’s perceptions of poverty and its causes; we want to know how children perceive poverty and what they think causes it. The study applied a qualitative approach, and the research data consisted of 30 semi-structured interviews with children aged 10–15. Respondents were not specifically recruited by any socioeconomic criteria and according to FAS children represent middle affluence group. The data was collected in the school located in one of the largest urban regions in Finland, in city in the outer urban area. The data were processed using content analysis and the major themes emerging from the data as a whole are the focus of this article. Children saw poverty as a relative absence of non-essential goods and items due to the scarcity of financial resources. It was not a question of poorer children lacking daily necessities, such as a home, clothes, equipment for leisure activities, or a mobile phone, but rather of poorer children having models that were outdated, or second-hand or broken goods. Poverty was seen as a phenomenon that almost by necessity shapes and influences people’s ways of thinking and actions. Poverty was also associated with humility, and poor children were considered to carry a social stigma. We condensed the children’s perceptions regarding the causes of poverty into six themes: individual blame, individual action, societal blame, societal situation, individual fate, and social fate. Some children emphasised the role of individual interpretations and independent choices; for others, poverty was ultimately explained by structural factors. Overall, however, the main accent was on structural explanations. On the other hand, these two sets of explanations also coexisted concurrently in children’s experiences, so that poverty was seen at once as both an individual and a societal phenomenon.
