Crisis communication within a community: Bonding, coping, and making sense together
ارتباطات بحران در یک جامعه: پیوند، مقابله، وحس کردن با هم-2018 Crisis communication has been researched extensively from managerial and functionalist ap
proaches, and little empirical research exists exploring the role of a community in helping
community members cope with crises. Situated in this major gap, the current investigation
adopts a community-centered approach that combines insights from chaos theory, uncertainty
reduction theory, and sensemaking theory. This study used a mixed method design to examine
the role of a campus community in dealing with a variety of campus crises. The qualitative study
gave an in-depth understanding of how a crisis is perceived and the underlying process of how a
community helps to make sense of a crisis. The quantitative study tested and further illustrated
this process through path analysis. The major contributions of this study to the current crisis
communication literature are twofold: (1) a crisis-induced community building model that de
monstrates a community’s role in helping community members self-organize, collectively make
sense of a crisis, and reproduce community experiences; and (2) instruments to measure a crisis
and community functionalities. Theoretical implications of this study on chaos theory, un
certainty reduction theory, and sensemaking theory are discussed.

Enhancing environmental management in universities through participation: the case of the University of Cordoba
بهبود مدیریت زیست محیطی در دانشگاه از طریق مشارکت: مورد دانشگاه کوردوبا-2018 This article illustrates the methodology for a participatory process that encourages the campus com
munity to help improve the environmental management of their institution, as an example of the
effective integration of this dimension of sustainability into higher education. Harnessing a participatory
approach, two proposals are made: the creation of a forum for discussing the institution’s main issues,
strengths and weaknesses in terms of environmental management, and boosting expectations and
generating proposals and action measures to be conveyed via a range of documents throughout the
process. The main result of its implementation at the Spanish University of Cordoba has been the
development of a Participatory Environmental Action Plan with a set of goals, aims and objectives, in
dicators and promoters. This process can be extrapolated to other organizations wishing to improve their
environmental management by involving their community members in their advance towards sus
tainability, thereby contributing to the environmental awareness and education of the actors involved.
