PIaaS: Cloud-oriented secure and privacy-conscious parking information as a service using VANETs

In this paper, we present a VANET-oriented cloud framework more explicitly as VANET commissioning clouds and propose a novel security and privacy-conscious service termed as Parking Information as a Service (PIaaS) employing VANET-oriented clouds. PIaaS offers more elegant parking information from cloud infrastructure to vehicular nodes in a security and privacy-conscious manner. The authentic vehic ular nodes (verified by the Traffic Management Bureau (TMB)) along with Parking Side Units (PSUs) com municate their frequent parking information termed as Parking Mobility Vectors (PMVs) with the cloud infrastructure through the Road Side Units (RSUs) named as Communication Terminals (CTs). The CTs forward the inelegant parking information (PMVs) from vehicular nodes to the cloud system, while af ter processed by the cloud infrastructure in coordination with PSUs construct and transmit more elegant parking information towards the respective physical location of the vehicular nodes. All the communica tion and exchange of parking information between cloud infrastructure and vehicular nodes is handled in a privacy-conscious anonymous way. It is hard to linkage PMVs to certain vehicular nodes for some kind of information leakage or exploitation. The proposed PIaaS scheme using identity-less PMVs that protects movement profiles of the vehicular nodes from the exploitation of both insider and outsider at tacks. Moreover, we proposed a novel geo-location-based parking lock encryption mechanism for location privacy and non-frameability. The cooperation among vehicular nodes, PSUs, and the cloud infrastructure is not only limited to the parking information dissemination but it also provides various kind of useful services such as route-based traffic congestion reports, vehicle theft control, and malicious vehicle detec tion. The cloud-oriented centralized information storage of the PMVs is very much helpful for analysis and forensics by TMB. In a nutshell, cloud infrastructure process the Big Parking Data (BPD) and yields the most significant parking information in a dynamic, pertinent, privacy and confidentiality preserved manner.

Mitigation of Bullwhip Effect in Supply Chain Inventory Management Model

This article starts with the reasons to bullwhip effect phenomenon, analyzes how to enhance inventory management strategy to reduce the bullwhip effect in supply chain management. And then, we study the case of McDonalds and its third-party logistics system HAVI cooperation to explore the cooperation mode between the two companies. Assuming that McDonalds stores as a logistics activities supply chain leader adopts the upper and lower inventory management strategy, according to the HAVI’s distribution for McDonalds stores, we develop a one-multi distribution model, and build a mathematical model for reducing inventory and improve service level. © 2017 The Authors. Utility Based Data Computing Scheme to Provide Sensing Service in Internet of Things

Recently, the internet-of-things (IoT) has emerged as a new paradigm with an ever-increasing number of things to be connected to the internet. Different from the conventional paradigms, in the IoT the data computing scheme is needed to efficiently collect and offer data to provide sensing service. However, the existing data computing schemes are unfriendly which lack the integrated and incentive consideration to reduce the cost of data collection and encourage more participants for cooperation. Therefore, in this paper we propose a utility-based data computing scheme which allows vehicles to collect mobile data in the urban area, in order to provide sensing service in the IoT. Firstly, we present an integrated architecture by introducing roadside buffers where each buffer can have a sink node to collect sensor data from vehicles. Next, by considering both the time cost and power cost during the data collection, we make the analysis of utilities in data computing process. Then, with a bargaining game to model the interaction among participants, a utility based data computing scheme is proposed with incentives where the optimal price can be determined for sensing service. Finally, extensive simulation experiments prove that the proposed scheme can efficiently improve the sensing service in IoT with a low cost.

Tourism coopetition: An introduction to the subject and a research agenda

This paper aims to verify the current status of the research on coopetition applied to Tourism. In order to overcome the lack of tools for analyzing competitive advantage generated by relational components, this paper suggests the use of the coopetition construct as a methodological tool for analyzing the cooperation in networks for the management of tourism destinations. To that end, we performed a bibliometric analysis on ‘tourism coopetition in scientific research papers published from 1995 to 2015 and indexed in the Web of Science and SciVerse Scopus databases. This helped us to conclude that coopetition is a behavior representing the key organizational methods of tourism destinations, especially when considering the interdependence and complementarity of this sector; thus, it should be a fundamental topic of tourism research. In this sense, the paper presents a research agenda in order to establish coopetition as key to understanding the behavior of all those involved in tourism at a particular destination.

Ocean container transport in global supply chains: Overview and research opportunities

This paper surveys the extant research in the field of ocean container transport. A wide range of issues is discussed including strategic planning, tactical planning and operations management issues, which are categorized into six research areas. The relationships be tween these research areas are discussed and the relevant literature is reviewed. Represen tative models are selected or modified to provide a flavour of their functions and applica tion context, and used to explain current shipping practices. Future research opportunities bearing in mind the emerging phenomena in the field are discussed. The main purpose is to raise awareness and encourage more research into and application of operations man agement techniques and tools in container transport chains.

Research on Intermodal Terminal Interaction in International Transport Corridors

Maritime and Hinterland terminals enable the transhipment of load units between various modes of transport and play a significant role in intermodal freight transport. The aim of the Thesis was to investigate the opportunities of interface between the intermodal terminals along the East–West and North–South international transport corridors in developing new services/goods. The theoretical-analytic part of the Thesis considers the issues related to the efficiency of interface of the multi-modal transport. Moreover this study discusses functions and role of the intermodal terminals in delivering intermodal units along the international transport corridors. In the Thesis related to the research presents a model (based on the literature analysis and findings of the questionnaire survey) could improve the interface of intermodal terminals along the international transport corridors. Continuation of distribution activity from the sea port terminal via the main terminal (hub) and further to more regions by using the services of containers trains will ensure more effective use of infrastructure (maritime and hinterland terminals). Information and communication technologies make transport services more attractive and viable. By applying the questionnaire survey and evaluating the key factors influencing the effectiveness of the international corridor, the efforts were made to investigate the opportunities of interface of intermodal terminals. In cooperation with all the stakeholders the applied new model could facilitate the development of new services in the international transport corridors.

Unions, collective relations laws and R&D investment in emerging and developing countries

Many scholars argue that workforce unionization leads to a reduction in R&D investment because unions appropriate a share of the returns to successful inventive efforts. On the other hand, it is widely acknowl edged that unions may encourage investment in R&D because of increased cooperation between workers andmanagement.Ourempiricalanalysisoncross-countryfirm-level datafrom23emerginganddevelop ing countries reveals a negative association between workforce unionization and firms’ R&D investment. This association is particularly pronounced when unions are protected by strong collective relations laws, supporting the notion that strong unions ‘tax’ the returns to successful inventions. Our findings have implications for policy makers who seek to improve emerging countries’ chances of catching up to the technological frontier, and for firm leaders concerned about the appropriation of returns to their R&D investments.

Development and application of the civil plutonium database in Russia

By now, vast amounts of plutonium have been accumulated in spent nuclear fuel from different types of reactors (power, research, propulsion) as part of the Soviet (Russian) nuclear program. Issues concerned with the future of the accumulated plutonium (or plutonium being accumulated), including its long-term storage, disposal or use as fuel in a closed fuel cycle, require an exact knowledge of where, in what quantities and in what condition plutonium is stored at a particular time point. The existing nuclear material control and accounting system does not provide for the required information. This study deals with the further evolution of a specialized database on civil plutonium (SDBP) in Russia the work on which was started in 2013 and which would allow preparing input data for system analytical investigations to support the decision-making on the future use of civil plutonium in Russia. The prime objective of the study is to enable the selection of technological batches of extracted plutonium for the manufacturing of the BN-800, BREST and BN-1200 fast reactor core loads. The SDBP can be also used to address a broader range of problems involved in justification of the closed nuclear fuel cycle. Cooperation with such powerful software systems as the CYCLE code will make it possible to perform high-accuracy calculations from a single workplace and within a compressed timeframe.Computer mechanisms were developed for processing and conversion of data, as well as mechanisms for the interaction with computational software systems (CYCLE) to prepare input data for the calculation of scenarios for the nuclear power evolution in Russia and worldwide based on thermal and fast reactors, including the closed nuclear fuel cycle.Copyright © 2017, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute). Ever closer or lost at sea? Scenarios for the future of transatlantic relations

Five key drivers will shape the future of transatlantic relations in the next decade. Generally, the extent of shared liberal culture and European collective action capacity are crucial for cooperation between the EU and US. Additionally, it matters whether policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic agree on a conception of global order, on how to handle future technologies, and on the use of military force. Building on these drivers we develop and discuss four scenarios. The first describes a world of selective cooperation as the EU disintegrates. In the second, the US withdraws from the global stage and Europeans are forced to assume a leadership position. The third depicts negative consequences from populist nationalism, reducing transatlantic coopera tion to military action against perceived Islamist threats. In the fourth scenario we focus on future technology that threatens to overwhelm transatlantic regulatory capacity.

Social networks, technology ties, and gatekeeper functionality: Implications for the performance management of R&D projects

R&D project teams concerned with efficiency under limited resources must cohesively coordinate cooperation, interactions, and the exchange of ideas to sustain innovation. This research investigated the management of social networks, technology ties, and gatekeeper functionality from a networking perspective and examined their contribution to R&D performance, which was evaluated using data envelopment analysis. This study verified the relationships by using data from the Taiwan National Telecommunication Program, which coordinates more than 100 R&D teams in pursuing next-generation broadband technologies. The results regarding these relationships varied. The density of social net working and the outward- and novel-oriented gatekeeper functionality of a project team was found to significantly promote its R&D performance, whereas the density of technology ties exhibits no sig nificance. Accordingly, this paper presents strategic implications for the management of projects, team interorganizational linkages, and governmental subsidy policies, and discusses the networking activities of R&D teams at the project level.
