1 Grover on KATAN: Quantum Resource Estimation
This article presents the cost analysis of mounting Grover’s key search attack on the family of KATAN block cipher. Several designs of the reversible quantum circuit of KATAN are proposed. Owing to the National Insitute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) proposal for postquantum cryptography standardization, the circuits are designed focusing on minimizing the overall depth. We observe that the reversible quantum circuits designed using and gates and T-depth one Toffoli gate give more shallow circuits. Grover oracle for KATAN is designed based on the reversible circuits, which are used further to mount Grover’s key search attack on KATAN. The designs are implemented using the software framework ProjectQ, which provides a resource estimation tool to perform an appropriate cost analysis in an automated way. While estimating the resources, NIST’s depth restrictions are also respected.

2 Optimal energy management of a residential-based hybrid renewable energy system using rule-based real-time control and 2D dynamic programming optimization method
This paper presents a magnetically coupled hybrid renewable energy system (RES) for residential applications. The proposed system integrates the energies of a set of PV panels, a fuel cell stack, and a battery using a multi-winding magnetic link to supply a residential load. It can operate in multiple gridconnected and off-grid operation modes. An energy management unit including an off-line dynamic programming-based optimization stage and a real-time rule-based controller is designed to optimally control the power flow in the system according to the provided energy plan. The system is designed according to the required standards of the grid-connected residential RES. Different sections of the proposed system including steady-state operation, control techniques, energy management method and hardware design are studied in brief. A prototype of the proposed system is developed and experimentally tested for an energy management scenario considering both sunny and cloudy profiles of the PV generation. The energy distribution and cost analysis approved the benefits of the proposed system for residential consumers.

3 Evaluating industrial modularization strategies: Local vs. overseas fabrication
Modularization is becoming more popular in industrial construction to enhance various project management aspects, including time, cost, safety, quality, and productivity. Although many studies have highlighted the differences between modular and conventional (stick-built) construction, little research is conducted to evaluate alternative fabrication strategies (e.g., overseas versus local fabrication). Some practitioners prefer to build modules locally, while some others prefer to outsource the module fabrication overseas and ship them to the industrial plant. This dramatically affects the decision on the size of the module envelope, and in turn, many other associated factors. The purpose of this study is to develop an integrated framework to evaluate different module fabrication strategies. This study employs various automation tools (e.g., building information modeling (BIM), simulation modeling) to quantify the impact of module fabrication strategies on any selected industrial project. The proposed framework considers various project aspects such as shipment and handling, fabrication, lifting, module resizing, and module assembly yard to find the best fabrication strategy. An actual case study, part of an industrial plant in Alberta, Canada, is presented in this paper to elucidate research contributions.

4 A cost analysis of machine learning using dynamic runtime opcodes for malware detection
The ongoing battle between malware distributors and those seeking to prevent the onslaught of malicious code has, so far, favored the former. Anti-virus methods are faltering with the rapid evolution and distribution of new malware, with obfuscation and detection evasion techniques exacerbating the issue. Recent research has monitored low-level opcodes to detect malware. Such dynamic analysis reveals the code at runtime, allowing the true behaviour to be examined. While previous research uses machine learning techniques to accurately detect malware using dynamic runtime opcodes, underpinning datasets have been poorly sampled and inadequate in size. Further, the datasets are always fixed size and no attempt, to our knowledge, has been made to examine the cost of retraining malware classification models on datasets which grow continually. In the literature, researchers discuss the explosion of malware, yet opcode analyses have used fixed-size datasets, with no deference to how this model will cope with retraining on escalating datasets. The research presented here examines this problem, and makes several novel contributions to the current body of knowledge. First, the performance of 23 machine learning algorithms are investigated with respect to the largest run trace dataset in the literature. Second, following an extensive hyperpa- rameter selection process, the performance of each classifier is compared, on both accuracy and computational costs (CPU time). Lastly, the cost of retraining and testing updatable and non-updatable classifiers, both parallelized and non-parallelized, is examined with simu- lated escalating datasets. This provides insight into how implemented malware classifiers would perform, given simulated dataset escalation. We find that parallelized RandomForest, using 4 cores, provides the optimal performance, with high accuracy and low training and testing times.

5 Environmental uncertainty, specific assets, and opportunism in 3PL relationships: A transaction cost economics perspective
Service provider opportunism is a serious concern in third party logistics (3PL) relationships. However, our knowledge about the antecedents of 3PL providers opportunism is limited. According to transaction cost economics (TCE), increased transaction costs cause opportunism. This study incorporates key TCE constructs (environmental uncertainty, specific assets, and opportunism) and conducts a transaction cost analysis. We argue that environmental uncertainty and specific assets create exchange hazards that result in opportunism. Meanwhile, specific assets reduce coordination costs raised by environmental uncertainty. Building on these arguments, this study tests a model that hypothesizes that environmental uncertainty (demand, supply, and technology uncertainty), and specific assets (user- and provider-specific assets) are positively related to opportunism, and that environmental uncertainty is positively related to specific assets. Structural equation modeling is used to examine data from 247 3PL relationships in China. The results show that demand uncertainty decreases opportunism, supply uncertainty increases opportunism, and technology uncertainty does not have a significant effect. User-specific assets increase opportunism, while provider-specific assets decrease opportunism. Demand and supply uncertainty have positive effects on user-specific assets, but non-significant effects on provider-specific assets, while technology uncertainty does not have a significant impact on user or provider-specific assets. In general, our findings are supported by the rationale of TCE, and industrial or cultural factors can explain several surprising findings. This study contributes to 3PL literature and practice.

6 Relationship between Inventory Management and Uncertain Demand for Fast Moving Consumer Goods Organisations
This paper addresses relationship between inventory management and uncertain demand. It also assesses the effects of uncertain demand on inventory management in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG). Inventory management should be given attention it deserves in order for the business to stay competitive, flexible for the demand and at low cost. Inventories are difficult to manage and control, and inventory managers find it challenging to know when to order and how much to order. The research was descriptive in nature and was conducted through the use of quantitative research methods. A survey questionnaire was used to collect primary data from five FMCG organisations in the manufacturing industry around Johannesburg. A sample of 255 respondents was involved in this study. According to the findings, significant relationship between inventory management and uncertain demand exists. The findings imply that poor inventory management will result in demands not being satisfied, organisations will either have too much or too little on hand, and this will result to the organisations’ failure.

8 Resiliency optimization of biomass to biofuel supply chain incorporating regional biomass pre-processing depots
Biomass to biofuel supply chain is subject to several potential disruptions such as flood, drought, pest attack, and equipment failure. These disruptions must be considered while designing the supply chain; especially if capital cost intensive components such as regional biomass pre-processing depots (RBPD) are to be implemented. This work develops a supply chain design optimization model that incorporates the possibility of such disruptions at the design stage. The objective function is the sum of the total cost incurred during the non-disruption and disruption scenarios weighted by their respective probability of occurrence. This also quantifies the expected disruption cost (EDC) on the operation of the supply chain. The decision variables are the locations and capacities of RBPDs and biorefinery, as well as the biomass flow across the supply chain. The model was applied to two separate case studies, namely, procurement of corn stover from farms arranged in a generic grid pattern, and procurement of corn stover, switch grass, and Miscanthus for a region of thirteen counties in Southern Illinois. The simulation results showed that the consideration of resiliency in design reduced the EDC of supply chain by up to 38% by optimizing the RBPD locations. The results were shown to depend on the intensity and nature of dis ruptions. This was especially true for feedstock with higher yield such as Miscanthus. Local parameters such as yield and biomass price also affected the optimal results. Moreover, the presence of RBPDs was shown to increase supply chain resiliency.

9 A proactive approach to supply chain risk management: Shifting orders among suppliers to mitigate the supply side risks
Globalization, e-trade, advanced technologies and emerging production techniques have increased supply chains’ efficiency and added value. However, despite numerous advantages, these factors make supply chains more fragile and vulnerable to risks. For this reason, companies that perform supply chain risk management gain competitive advantage. In the past, supply chain managers mainly focused on reducing costs; but recently, they have begun to give importance to supply chain continuity and re siliency which have significant impacts on costs as well. Hence, conventional reactive planning has given way to proactive planning in supply chain risk management. In this study, the supply chain risk man agement process is investigated and a procedure is proposed in the risk mitigation phase. In the first stage of the proposed procedure, an initial procurement plan is obtained via a linear programming model, considering the cost criterion as the first priority. In the second stage, this plan is revised by including the risk criterion into the planning as the second priority. The aim of this procedure that enables proactive planning is to reduce the supply side risks. The model is tested with a hypothetical data set and the cost analysis is performed to evaluate the performance of the procedure. Finally, the whole supply chain risk management process including the proposed procedure is applied to an international automotive company.
