331 Production and procurement strategies for seasonal product supply chain under yield uncertainty with commitment-option contracts

This paper develops a game-theoretic decision-making model of production and procurement with commit ment-option contracts in a decentralized supply chain consisting of one manufacturer and one retailer. The manufacturer distributes one kind of seasonal product via the retailer to the end market, whose demand is random, and the manufacturers production yield is stochastic. We study the retailers optimal ordering policy and the manufacturers optimal production strategy under two different option contracts (that is, commitment unidirectional call option contract and commitment-bidirectional option contract). The effects of demand uncertainty, production yield stochastic volatility, instant procurement price variability, and the price parameters’ changes of option contracts on the optimal operational strategies and performances of both participants are also analyzed. These results will be helpful for the manufacturers and retailers in the supply chain with seasonal products to make production scheduling strategy and procurement policy feasibly and scientifically.

332 “I just googled and read everything”: Exploring breast cancer survivors’ use of the internet to find information on complementary medicine

Objective: Breast cancer survivors often turn to the internet as an information resource when deciding whether to use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) but their use of online CAM-related resources is poorly understood. The objective was to explore breast cancer survivors’ use of the internet when making decisions about CAM use. Design: A purposive sample of 11 breast cancer survivors (mean age = 56) completed a quantitative ques tionnaire and a qualitative telephone interview. The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) was used to guide interview questions. Framework analysis and descriptive statistics were used. Setting: United Kingdom. Results: All participants found information on CAM using the internet and used some form of CAM after their diagnosis. Themes from the interviews went beyond the standard definitions of the TPB areas. Despite the lack of approval from their social network and healthcare team, participants used the internet to find information on CAM. Further, participants’ cancer diagnosis changed their needs, transforming how they perceived and ex perienced the internet Conclusions: Participants’ use of the internet was more complex than can easily be explained by the TPB and was inherently connected to the experience of self-management for the consequences of cancer and its treatment. As breast cancer survivors may not disclose their use of the internet to their healthcare team, healthcare profes sionals need to be aware that the information available on the internet plays a factor in the decision-making process to use CAM.

334 The fuzzy multi-objective distribution planner for a green meat supply chain

It is often a complex task for developing a product distribution plan of a supply chain (SC) network and a supportive decision tool can be useful for easing the role of decision-making. On the other hand, it has been increasingly becoming a demand to design a supply chain network considering the environmental impact as a new dimension as required by authorities in many countries. This paper describes a development of a product distribution planner for a three-echelon green meat supply chain (MSC) design in terms of issues including numbers and locations of facilities that should be opened in association with the product quantity flows. These issues were formulated into a fuzzy multi-objective programming model (FMOPM) with an aim to minimize the total cost of transportation and implementation, the amount of CO2 emissions in transportation and the distribution time of products from farms to abattoirs and from abattoirs to retailers, and maximize the average delivery rate in satisfying product quantity as requested by abattoirs and retailers. To optimize the four objectives simultaneously, three solution methods were investigated and used; which are the LP-metrics method, the ε-constraint method and the goal programming method. The best solution was determined using the Max-Min method by comparing the obtained Pareto solutions. A case study was examined based on the developed model that demonstrates its applicability in making an optimal product distribution plan in trade-offs among the four objectives.

335 Coordination of social responsibility and order quantity in a two-echelon supply chain: A collaborative decision-making perspective

Regarding globalization growing trend and sustainability concerns, the need for paying attention to the issues of corporate social responsibility (CSR) not only applies to individual firms, but also extends to the whole supply chain (SC) networks. Assisting CSR issues in one individual firm will thoroughly influence other supply chain members. In this paper, a supplier-retailer SC is considered in a newsvendor setting. It is possible for the supplier to invest in CSR activities which could improve the popularity of products and, subsequently, market demand. Firstly, both members decisions under decentralized and centralized decision-making models are investigated; afterwards, a novel collaborative model is proposed to determine optimal order quantity and CSR investment, thus maximizing the whole SC profits and also motivating members to participate. Finally, the results of decentralized, centralized, and collaborative models are compared and some managerial insights are provided. Numerical experiments indicate that, under some circumstances, alongside the increment of SC profits, more CSR investment and better CSR performance level will be achieved through the collaborative model than other decision-making structures.

336 Assessment of supply chain integration and performance relationships: A meta-analytic investigation of the literature

The concept of integration has received considerable attention in operations and supply chain management literature in a time spanning over two decades. To advance theory development, it is important to critically examine the empirical findings in various integration studies. This paper undertakes an extensive investigation of the relationships between supply chain integration and various performance dimensions using a meta analytical methodology. The study contributes to literature in four important ways. First, the findings empirically show that internal integration, supplier integration, and customer integration have significant impact on a firms financial performance. Second, the study examines the impact of internal integration, supplier integration, and customer integration on a firms operational performance; and its underlying dimensions of cost, quality, delivery, and flexibility separately. Third, the study points out the specific relationships between supply chain integration and performance that need to be further examined within contingency framework to discern the role of moderating factors. Finally, to provide direction for managerial decision-making, the study offers insights regarding integration dimension(s) that have largest breadth and depth of impact on various performance measures.

337 From metaphorical information overflow and overload to real stress: Theoretical background, empirical findings, and applications

The paper presents the reader with a psychological analysis of one of the results of the global phe nomenon of information overflow and how it translates into an observable psychological outcome, in formation stress, thus hindering the process of decision-making. Both, the anchoring in the broader context of civilizational changes and, in the particular, in the field of psychology, especially individual differences and stress psychology, are provided, followed by a series of results of our own investigations of managers and emerging adults (entering the job market). Particularly, self-control and the styles of thinking are presented as correlates of increased infostress. We then explore the implications these results might have for the selection and training of managers.

338 Make it personal: A social explanation system applied to group recommendations

Recommender systems help users to identify which items from a variety of choices best match their needs and preferences. In this context, explanations act as complementary information that can help users to better comprehend the system’s output and to encourage goals such as trust, confidence in decision-making or utility. In this paper we propose a Personalized Social Individual Explanation approach (PSIE). Unlike other expert systems the PSIE proposal novelly includes explanations about the system’s group recommendation and explanations about the group’s social reality with the goal of inducing a pos itive reaction that leads to a better perception of the received group recommendations. Among other challenges, we uncover a special need to focus on “tactful” explanations when addressing users’ personal relationships within a group and to focus on personalized reassuring explanations that encourage users to accept the presented recommendations. Besides, the resulting intelligent system significatively increases users’ intent (likelihood) to follow the recommendations, users’ satisfaction and the system’s efficiency and trustworthiness.

339 Challenges in IT security preparedness exercises: A case study

The electric power industry is currently implementing major technological changes in order to achieve the goal of smart grids. However, these changes are expected to increase the sus ceptibility of the industry to IT security incidents. IT security preparedness exercises are not commonly performed in the electric power industry, even though this industry is con sidered part of society’s critical infrastructure. Resolving an IT security incident requires inter-departmental collaborations between various categories of personnel, and to success fully achieve this, training is required. The process of preparing a response to incidents enhances the nature of collaboration, coordination, and communication within an organi zation. Our objective is to understand the challenges faced when performing IT security preparedness exercises, as challenges experienced during these exercises affect the re sponse process during a real incident. By improving the exercises, the response capabilities would be strengthened accordingly. We have designed a multiple-case study with six teams in three organizations. We collected data by performing semi-structured interviews, par ticipant observations, and from process artifacts. We identified six main challenges involving team composition and external expert involvement, goal definition, documentation, and time management. In summary, there are many ways of conducting preparedness exercises.There fore, organizations need to both optimize current exercise practices and experiment with new ones in order to ensure continuous learning and improvement; hence, they can be ad equately prepared to respond to IT security incidents.

340 Empirical assessment of the competitive conduct of Nigerian banks in a post-consolidation era

This paper is an empirical assessment of the level of competition in the Nigerian banking industry following the consolidation exercise, using a bank-level panel data, for the period 2005–2014. Empirical evidence from the Panzar and Rosse (1987) H-statistic reveals that market power in the Nigerian banking industry is consistent with monopolistic competition, which implies that firms are independent in their decision-making and conduct. This study innovates by incorporating non-interest income accounts in the assessment of revenue, and findings suggest that bank competitiveness decreases as revenue tends toward an inclusion of non-interest income or fee based services.
