3 Criminal offending trajectories from adolescence through young adulthood and the risk of food insecurity: evidence from the Add Health study
Add Health-2020
Purpose: High-rate, persistent criminal offending has substantial negative health consequences. This study examines how criminal offending trajectories during adolescence influence the risk of food insecurity in early adulthood. Methods: The study uses four waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health to determine the association between criminal offending trajectory membership and food insecurity. The analysis controls for individual- and neighborhood-level risk factors and assesses the mediating effects of depression and household income. Results: Five distinct offending trajectories were established using a group-based trajectory model. Membership in various offending trajectories predicts an increased risk for food insecurity. Those in high-rate, chronic-offending trajectories have the highest risk of food insecurity in early adulthood (OR ¼ 2.062; P < .01). These effects are significantly attenuated by depressive symptoms. Conclusions: This is the first study to test the association between criminal offending trajectory membership from adolescence through young adulthood and the risk of food insecurity in adulthood. Access to nutrition assistance and support among individuals with chronic-offending histories may minimize the risk of food insecurity. Those embedded in disadvantaged contexts are likely at a heightened risk. Improvements to mental health services and employment opportunities may reduce food insecurity among these vulnerable populations.

4 Criminal offending and health over the life-course: A dual-trajectory approach
Despite a growth of research on the intersection of health and crime, limited work investigates this relationship as it evolves over the life-course. Drawing on data from four waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (N = 9037), the current study uses dual group-based trajectory modeling to investigate the joint development of criminal offending, physical health, and mental well-being from adolescence into young adulthood (ages 11–32). Further, multinomial logistic regression is employed to determine common sociodemographic, personality, and behavioral factors associated with multiple trajectories. Study findings suggest that individuals who persistently offend at higher rates are more likely to experience worse overall health and more depressive symptoms, whereas the lowest rate offenders have substantially lower likelihoods of physical and mental health problems. Several theoretically relevant characteristics including being male, low self-control, adolescent academic performance, and illicit drug use in adolescence predict membership in trajectories characterized by higher rates of offending and lower quality health. Theoretical and policy implications of these findings are discussed in the context of extant literature.

5 Associations of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and QuestioningeInclusive Sex Education With Mental Health Outcomes and School-Based Victimization in U:S: High School Students
Purpose: Homophobic school climates are related to increased victimization for sexual minority youth (SMY), leading to increased risk of adverse mental health outcomes. Interventions that promote positive school climate may reduce the risk of victimization and adverse mental health outcomes in SMY. This study explored whether lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ)einclusive sex education is associated with adverse mental health and school-based victimization in U.S. youth. Methods: Data analysis of representative data from the 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey and the 2014 School Health Profiles was conducted using multilevel logistic models testing whether youth in states with higher proportions of schools teaching LGBTQ-inclusive sex education had lower odds of reporting being bullied in school and experiencing adverse mental health outcomes, including depressive symptoms and suicidality. Results: After controlling for covariates, protective effects for all youth were found for suicidal thoughts (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: .91, 95% confidence interval [CI]: .89e.93) and making a suicide plan (AOR: .79; 95% CI: .77e.80). Lesbian and gay youth had lower odds of experiencing bullying in school as the proportion of schools within a state teaching LGBTQ-inclusive sex education increased (AOR: .83; CI: .71e.97). Bisexual youth had significantly lower odds of reporting depressive symptoms (AOR: .92; 95% CI: .87e.98). Conclusions: Students in states with a greater proportion of LGBTQ-inclusive sex education have lower odds of experiencing school-based victimization and adverse mental health. These findings can be used to guide intervention development at the school and state levels

6 Identifying the relative importance of non-suicidal self-injury features in classifying suicidal ideation, plans, and behavior using exploratory data mining
Individuals with a history of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) are at alarmingly high risk for suicidal ideation (SI), planning (SP), and attempts (SA). Given these findings, research has begun to evaluate the features of this multi faceted behavior that may be most important to assess when quantifying risk for SI, SP, and SA. However, no studies have examined the wide range of NSSI characteristics simultaneously when determining which NSSI features are most salient to suicide risk. The current study utilized three exploratory data mining techniques (elastic net regression, decision trees, random forests) to address these gaps in the literature. Undergraduates with a history of NSSI (N = 359) were administered measures assessing demographic variables, depression, and 58 NSSI characteristics (e.g., methods, frequency, functions, locations, scarring) as well as current SI, current SP, and SA history. Results suggested that depressive symptoms and the anti-suicide function of NSSI were the most important features for predicting SI and SP. The most important features in predicting SA were the anti-suicide function of NSSI, NSSI-related medical treatment, and NSSI scarring. Overall, results suggest that NSSI functions, scarring, and medical lethality may be more important to assess than commonly regarded NSSI severity indices when ascertaining suicide risk.

7 Social networking site (SNS) use by adolescent mothers: Can social support and social capital be enhanced by online social networks? – A structured review of the literature
Aims and objectives: to critically appraise the available literature and summarise the evidence relating to adolescent mothers use of social networking sites in terms of any social support and social capital they may provide and to identify areas for future exploration. Background: social networking sites have been demonstrated to provide social support to marginalised individuals and provide psycho-social benefits to members of such groups. Adolescent mothers are at risk of; social marginalisation; anxiety disorders and depressive symptoms; and poorer health and educational outcomes for their children. Social support has been shown to benefit adolescent mothers thus online mechanisms require consideration. Design: a review of original research articles Method: key terms and Boolean operators identified research reports across a 20-year timeframe pertaining to the area of enquiry in: CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Medline, Scopus, ERIC, ProQuest, PsychINFO, Web of Science, Health Collection (Informit) and Google Scholar databases. Eight original research articles met the inclusion criteria for this review. Findings: studies demonstrate that adolescent mothers actively search for health information using the Internet and social networking sites, and that social support and social capital can be attributed to their use of specifically created online groups from within targeted health interventions. Use of a message board forum for pregnant and parenting adolescents also demonstrates elements of social support. There are no studies to date pertaining to adolescent mothers use of globally accessible social networking sites in terms of social support provision and related outcomes. Conclusions: further investigation is warranted to explore the potential benefits of adolescent mothers use of globally accessible social networking sites in terms of any social support provision and social capital they may provide.

8 The relationship between social desirability bias and self-reports of health, substance use, and social network factors among urban substance users in Baltimore, Maryland
Background: Social desirability response bias may lead to inaccurate self-reports and erroneous study conclusions. The present study examined the relationship between social desirability response bias and self reports of mental health, substance use, and social network factors among a community sample of inner-city substance users. Methods: The study was conducted in a sample of 591 opiate and cocaine users in Baltimore, Maryland from 2009 to 2013. Modified items from the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale were included in the survey, which was conducted face-to-face and using Audio Computer Self Administering Interview (ACASI) methods. Results: There were highly statistically significant differences in levels of social desirability response bias by levels of depressive symptoms, drug use stigma, physical health status, recent opiate and cocaine use, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) scores, and size of social networks. There were no associations between health service utilization measures and social desirability bias. In multiple logistic regression models, even after including the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) as a measure of depressive symptomology, social desirability bias was associated with recent drug use and drug user stigma. Social desirability bias was not associated with enrollment in prior research studies. Conclusions: These findings suggest that social desirability bias is associated with key health measures and that the associations are not primarily due to depressive symptoms. Methods are needed to reduce social desirability bias. Such methods may include the wording and prefacing of questions, clearly defining the role of “study participant,” and assessing and addressing motivations for socially desirable responses.

9 Upward social comparison on social network sites and depressive symptoms: A moderated mediation model of self-esteem and optimism
Studies have revealed that upward social comparison on social network sites (SNSs) was a risk factor for depres sive symptoms, however, little is known about the underlying processes that may mediate or moderate this re lationship. This study extended prior research by examining the mediating role of self-esteem and the moderating role of optimism in this relationship. A sample of 1205 Chinese undergraduate students completed measures of upward social comparison on SNSs, depressive symptoms, self-esteem, and optimism. Results showed that self-esteem partially mediated the relation between upward social comparison on SNSs and depres sive symptoms. In addition, the direct effect of upward social comparison on SNSs on depressive symptoms and the mediating effect of self-esteem were both moderated by optimism. The two effects were more potent for in dividuals with low optimism than for those with high optimism. The present study contributes to a better under standing of how and when upward social comparison on SNSs increases the risk of depressive symptoms. Limitations and implications of this study are discussed.
