Top management team characteristics and digital innovation: Exploring digital knowledge and TMT interfaces

vation. The top management team (TMT) is expected to set the course for digital innovation,
which is a challenging endeavour given the novel and cross-functional nature of digital innova-
tion. We draw on role theory to make sense of emerging role requirements for the TMT and
combine this view with upper echelon theory to hypothesize on the specific TMT characteristics
that are needed for digital innovation. We first theorize that firms could benefit from TMT digital
knowledge. Second, we argue that the effective utilization of TMT digital knowledge can be
fostered at internal TMT interfaces, such as between the chief executive officer (CEO), respec-
tively a chief digital officer (CDO), and other top managers. Finally, we consider the TMT hier-
archical structure as a contextual factor in the stimulation of TMT integration processes by
integrative CEOs and CDOs. We employ panel data regressions to a longitudinal dataset of US
industrial firms and find a positive relation between TMT digital knowledge and digital inno-
vation, on average. We additionally find evidence for the integrative roles of CEOs and CDOs.
However, our findings also indicate that the CDO’s integrating role can be hampered by a strong

The role of digital innovation in knowledge management systems: A systematic literature review
نقش نوآوری دیجیتال در سیستم های مدیریت دانش: مرور ادبیات سیستماتیک-2021 This article investigates the literary corpus on digital innovation in knowledge management systems (KMS) to
understand its role in business governance.
The study introduces a broad survey of the scientific literature on this topic to understand how digital
innovation promotes new business models through the optimization of new knowledge.
We carried out a bibliometric analysis on a database, including 46 articles published in the last three decades
(1990–2020). All the articles were written in English.
The results show that research published on the topic reveals interesting implications for business models and
business performance. These findings especially highlight the links between innovation and sustainability,
revealing that digital transformation tools contribute over the long-term to the value creation process. This
research contributes to the existing literature analyzing the KMS topic by considering it from the digital inno-
vation processes perspective, pointing out the need to implement new knowledge creation and to share measures

Business value of big data analytics: A systems-theoretic approach and empirical test

whether and how big data analytics create business value has not been fully understood and empirically validated
at a large scale. Taking social media analytics as an example, this paper is among the first attempts to
theoretically explain and empirically test the market performance impact of big data analytics. Drawing on the
systems theory, we explain how and why social media analytics create super-additive value through the synergies
in functional complementarity between social media diversity for gathering big data from diverse social
media channels and big data analytics for analyzing the gathered big data. Furthermore, we deepen our theorizing
by considering the difference between small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and large firms in the required
integration effort that enables the synergies of social media diversity and big data analytics. In line with
this theorizing, we empirically test the synergistic effect of social media diversity and big data analytics by using
a recent large-scale survey data set from 18,816 firms in Italy. We find that social media diversity and big data
analytics have a positive interaction effect on market performance, which is more salient for SMEs than for large

Envisioning entrepreneurship and digital innovation through a design science research lens: A matrix approach
پیش بینی کارآفرینی و نوآوری دیجیتال از طریق یک لنز تحقیق علوم طراحی: یک رویکرد ماتریسی-2020 Design Science Research (DSR) in the information systems (IS) field is, at its essence, about Digital Innovation
(DI). Innovative sociotechnical design artifacts involve digital information technologies (IT) being used in ways
that result in profound disruptions to traditional ways of doing business and to widespread societal changes. The
pervasiveness of DI means that the individuals involved in bringing it about have diverse backgrounds, including
application specialists, software engineers, data scientists, business managers, economists, venture capitalists,
various user groups, and entrepreneurial leaders. This range of backgrounds means that DI, much more than
traditional innovation, leads to varied perspectives on the methods and tools to be used in the development of
effective and evolvable complex systems incorporating digital innovations. In this paper we present a new matrix
approach to DI based on DSR, entrepreneurship, and innovation theories. Clear strategic guidance allows these
multiple stakeholders to make sense of the diverse landscape and to understand when and how different entrepreneurial strategies for innovation can best be applied. We define the combined DSR and DI matrix approach
in terms of four strategies: invention; advancement; exaptation; and exploitation and their associated DI practices. The research contribution is a novel DSR-DI matrix process model. This model extends entrepreneurship
theory as it enriches effectuation thinking with more detailed process guidance for ambidextrous entrepreneurship and it enriches DSR models for DI by showing more explicitly the different pathways corresponding to different quadrants in the knowledge-innovation matrix. The CAGE around cyberspace? How digital innovations internationalize in a virtual world

are globally available via online platforms, their international penetration is still subject to
cultural, administrative, geographic, and economic (CAGE) distances that act as user adoption
barriers to impede app internationalization. App developers may overcome these barriers by
employing the demand-side strategies of engaging users in value co-creation. We contribute to an
improved understanding of internationalization process in a digital context and also extend demand-side perspective to inform international entrepreneurship research.

Moving a mountain with a teaspoon: Toward a theory of digital entrepreneurship in the regulatory environment

environment, however, it is unclear how a new startup might digitally transform business through entrepreneurial
actions to overcome the challenges and barriers from regulations. Drawing on the dynamic capabilities
and digital innovation literature, I conduct an in-depth longitudinal study at a Dutch digital startup. I
trace the underlying mechanisms through which it creates digital solutions to the regulations in the Dutch
healthcare sector — demand-driven digital disruption, fast digital adaptation, and continuous digital transplantation.

Digital entrepreneurship and field conditions for institutional change– Investigating the enabling role of cities

vested interest groups who posit superior financial and relational resources. In this paper, we explore the role of
cities in facilitating digital entrepreneurship and overcoming institutional resistance to innovation. Drawing
upon two historical case studies of digital entrepreneurship in the city of Stockholm along with an extensive
material on the sharing economy in Sweden, our results suggest that cities offer an environment that is critical
for digital entrepreneurship. The economic and technological diversity of a city may provide the field conditions

The digital transformation of innovation and entrepreneurship: Progress, challenges and key themes
تحول دیجیتال نوآوری و کارآفرینی: پیشرفت ، چالش ها و مضامین کلیدی-2019 The emergence of novel and powerful digital technologies, digital platforms and digital infrastructures has
transformed innovation and entrepreneurship in significant ways. Beyond simply opening new opportunities for
innovators and entrepreneurs, digital technologies have broader implications for value creation and value
capture. Research aimed at understanding the digital transformation of the economy needs to incorporate
multiple and cross-levels of analysis, embrace ideas and concepts from multiple fields/disciplines, and explicitly
acknowledge the role of digital technologies in transforming organizations and social relationships. To help
realize this research agenda, we identify three key themes related to digitization—openness, affordances, and
generativity—and, outline broad research issues relating to each. We suggest that such themes that are innate to
digital technologies could serve as a common conceptual platform that allows for connections between issues at
different levels as well as the integration of ideas from different disciplines/areas. We then summarize the
contributions of the 11 papers presented in this Special Issue relating them to one or more of these themes and

Big Data for Open Digital Innovation – A Research Roadmap

leading to open collaboration ecosystems. Individuals self-organize in open, voluntary technology-enabled
collectives to share their enhancements to the data or collaborate on analyzing, disseminating, or
leveraging the data for many applications, from enterprise computing to mobile, consumer oriented
applications. ‘Big data’ is an increasingly important ‘engine’ to better understand the complex ‘nervous
system’ of open collaboration. However, we need to equip open collaboration researchers with new
datasets that span different contexts, as well as novel computational models and analytical techniques. In
this paper, we will elaborate on research questions concerning open digital collaboration and derive the
data analytical challenges that need to be addressed to answer these research questions.
