Experiments with a data-public: Moving digital methods into critical proximity with political practice
آزمایشات با داده های عمومی: انتقال روش های دیجیتال به نزدیکی بحرانی با عمل سیاسی-2019 Making publics visible through digital traces has recently generated interest by practitioners of public engagement and scholars
within the field of digital methods. This paper presents an experiment in moving such methods into critical proximity with
political practice and discusses how digital visualizations of topical debates become appropriated by actors and hardwired into
existing ecologies of publics and politics. Through an experiment in rendering a specific data-public visible, it shows how the
interplay between diverse conceptions of the public as well as the specific platforms and data invoked, resulted in a situated
affordance-space that allowed specific renderings take shape, while disadvantaging others. Furthermore, it argues that several
accepted tropes in the literatures of digital methods ended up being problematic guidelines in this space. Among these is the
prescription to shown heterogeneity by pushing back at established media logics.

Data infrastructure literacy
سواد اطلاعاتی زیرساخت داده-2018 A recent report from the UN makes the case for ‘‘global data literacy’’ in order to realise the opportunities afforded by
the ‘‘data revolution’’. Here and in many other contexts, data literacy is characterised in terms of a combination of
numerical, statistical and technical capacities. In this article, we argue for an expansion of the concept to include not just
competencies in reading and working with datasets but also the ability to account for, intervene around and participate in
the wider socio-technical infrastructures through which data is created, stored and analysed – which we call ‘‘data
infrastructure literacy’’. We illustrate this notion with examples of ‘‘inventive data practice’’ from previous and ongoing
research on open data, online platforms, data journalism and data activism. Drawing on these perspectives, we argue that
data literacy initiatives might cultivate sensibilities not only for data science but also for data sociology, data politics as
well as wider public engagement with digital data infrastructures. The proposed notion of data infrastructure literacy is
intended to make space for collective inquiry, experimentation, imagination and intervention around data in educational
programmes and beyond, including how data infrastructures can be challenged, contested, reshaped and repurposed to
align with interests and publics other than those originally intended.

Medialab stories: How to align actor network theory and digital methods
داستان Medialab: چگونگی تراز کرن تئوری شبکه بازیگر و روش های دیجیتال-2018 The history of laboratories may become controversial in social sciences. In this paper, the story of Sciences Po Me´dialab told
by Venturini et al. is discussed and completed by demonstrating the incoherence in the choice of digital methods at the
Me´dialab from the actor network theory perspective. As the Me´dialab mostly used web topologies as structural analysis of
social positions, they were not able to account for the propagation of ideas, considered in actor network theory as nonhumans that have their own agency. The main arguments in favour of the ‘more continuous social’ developed at the Me´dialab
(quali-quanti, following the actors, zooming) proved to be as misleading as the network metaphor. The distribution of agency
that actor network theory so successfully expands was paradoxicallty reduced to structures and individual preferences, to
the detriment of the agency of replications that circulate entities in the form of messages, content or memes, and that should
now become the next step for actor network theory-style digital methods.

The (almost) imperceptible impact of tourism research on policy and practice
تاثیر (تقریبا) قابل توجهی از تحقیقات گردشگری بر سیاست و عمل-2017 The need to demonstrate the value of research to non-academic audiences is an increasingly prominent
feature of the research policy landscape in many parts of the world. Yet, little is understood about the
factors that differentiate academic researchers in terms of their relative influence on non-academic
actors. Following a review of the literature, this study uses novel digital methods to undertake a
detailed study of the non-academic impact of UK based tourism academics. The findings suggest that
non-academic impact is strikingly lower in tourism than in the social sciences more generally. The
multiple regression analyses used reveal that researchers who score highly using a range of academic
metrics are also cited more by policy-makers and other practitioners. On the basis of the findings,
research impact in tourism is theorized. This has implications for individual and institutional tourism
research strategies beyond the geographical limitations of the study.
