21 “Hello are you available?” Dealing with online frauds and the role of forensic science

On August 6, 2019, the 119 members of the School of criminal justice, forensic science and criminology at the University of Lausanne were the target of an online scammer. His/her modus operandi consisted of email masquerading as the Director of the School in an attempt to induce the victims to buy digital gift cards and to transmit the card usage code to the perpetrator. The first author of this paper is the Director of the School, and the second is an expert in digital forensic science and a professor of the School. They worked together in real time to deal with the fraud. Because the fraud occurred in a School of forensic science and criminology, it raised many questions on a variety of overlapping dimensions. The objective of this study was, therefore, to draw lessons from this case from several perspectives ranging from forensic science to cybersecurity, and from practical to academic. The response to the incident has been treated in four typical distinguishable phases: (1) fraud detection; (2) crisis management; (3) post-incident analysis; and (4) reporting to different communities. We conclude this paper by taking lessons from the case to express the essential role of forensic knowledge and crime analysis in interpreting the information conveyed by digital traces to develop innovative cross-disciplinary models for preventing, detecting, analysing, investigating and responding to online fraud.

22 Industry 4:0 based process data analytics platform: A waste-to-energy plant case study

Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies are rapidly fueling data and software solutions driven digitalization in many fields notably in industrial automation and manufacturing systems. Among the several benefits offered by these technologies, is the infrastructure for harnessing big-data, machine learning (ML) and cloud computing software tools, for instance in designing advanced data analytics platforms. Although, this is an area of increased interest, the information concerning the implementation of data analytics in the context of Industry 4.0 is scarcely available in scientific literature. Therefore, this work presents a process data analytics platform built around the concept of industry 4.0. The platform utilizes the state-of-the-art IIoT platforms, ML algorithms and big-data software tools. The platform emphasizes the use of ML methods for process data analytics while leveraging big-data processing tools and taking advantage of the currently available industrial grade cloud computing platforms. The industrial applicability of the platform was demonstrated by the development of soft sensors for use in a waste-to-energy (WTE) plant. In the case study, the work studied datadriven soft sensors to predict syngas heating value and hot flue gas temperature. Among the studied data-driven methods, the neural network-based NARX model demonstrated better performance in the prediction of both syngas heating value and flue gas temperature. The modeling results showed that, in cases where process knowledge about the process phenomena at hand is limited, data-driven soft sensors are useful tools for predictive data analytics.

23 AI-Powered Home Electrical Appliances as Enabler of Demand-Side Flexibility

In the digitalization era, the increasing number of connected appliances and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) enabled a new realm of possibilities in the residential energy sector, including the chance for a consumer to play an active role in flexibility programs. We talk about demand-side flexibility (DSF) when a consumer adapts his/her energy consumption behavior in response to variable energy prices or market incentives. The procedure depends on a two-way communication between an energy supplier and a customer, and his/her willingness to act on the electricity consumption. The success of the different DSF approaches is strongly related to the estimation of appliance usage patterns and AI techniques represent a viable solution.

24 Digitalization of the economy and entrepreneurship intention

Our paper contributes to the nascent field of technological entrepreneurial intent by proposing a model linking students’ entrepreneurial intent to digitalization of the economy, and providing evidence based on a small transition economy: Kosovo. Our sample is composed of 310 students from two universities in Kosovo (University of Pristina and University of Applied Sciences in Ferizaj). These two universities account for around 60% of student enrolment in Kosovo. We use a modified version of the Entrepreneurial Intention Questionnaire (EIQ) scale developed by Liñán and Chen (2009) which considers the extent of digitalization of the economy. The findings reveal that personal attitude and behavioral content are the main determinants of entrepreneurial intention; our structural model shows that they explain 72.7% of the total variance.

صنعت خدماتی از جمله خطوط هواپیمایی، آژانس های مسافرتی و هتل ها، از اولین اتخاذ کنندگان فرآیند دیجیتالی شدن هستند. این دیجیتالی شدن یک بخش جدید را در صنعت گردشگری ایجاد کرده است که گردشگری الکترونیک نام دارد( که زین پس به صورت ای-توریسم مطرح می شود). گردشگری الکترونیک به ارائه همه خدمات گردشگری با استفاده از یک پلتفرم واحد اشاره دارد. سیر تکاملی گردشگری الکترونیک شیوه و استراتژی کاری کسب و کارها را تغییر داده است و به صورت مستقیم بر رفتار تامین کنندگان و همچنین رفتار مصرفی مصرف کنندگان تاثیر گذاشته است. اکثر پلتفرم های آنلاین رویکرد گردشگری آنلاین را تایید کرده اند و سیستم های توزیع سنتی شان را به فرآیندهای توزیع دیجیتال تغییر داده اند. به کارگیری پلتفرم های دیجیتال، خدمات توریسم را برای همه بخش های بازار در دسترس قرار داده است و مصرف بالای خدمات گردشگری را به ثبت رسانده است. در حقیقت، فعالیت های گردشگری بین المللی در طول 10 سال گذشته رشد سریعی داشته است و نسبت به سال 2007 دو برابر شده است. این مقاله در مورد تاثیر تحول دیجیتال در صنعت گردشگری با افزایش رفتارهای کارآفرینانه تامین کنندگان از یک طرف و تاثیرگذاری فرهنگ مصرف مسافران/گردشگران از طرف دیگر بحث می کند. یک رویکرد کیفی با انجام مصاحبه های عمیق از مدیران اجرایی بخش گردشگری برای ایجاد ارتباط بین گردشگری الکترونیک با کارآفرینی صورت پذیرفت. علاوه بر این، یک پرسشنامه نیز بین مشتریان گردشگری الکترونیک به منظور درک الگو و فرهنگ مصرفی شان توزیع شد. هدف این مقاله تصدیق اهمیت دیجیتال سازی گردشگری در تقویت نوآوری و کارآفرینی در صنعت گردشگری است.

26 Exploring blockchain for the energy transition: Opportunities and challenges based on a case study in Japan

Under pressures to reach net zero emissions by 2050, there is an ongoing transition of energy decarbonization, decentralization and digitalization. Physical and information flows in energy systems are increasingly complex and distributed, leaving centralized structures inefficient. Blockchain technology is suggested as part of the next step in this transition. Blockchain has potential to facilitate distributed, peer-to-peer trading with reduced transaction costs, increased security via cryptography, and prosumer choice. However, there are as of yet multiple challenges to the expansion of blockchain in the energy sector. This paper argues that analysis of these challenges requires a multi-angled approach incorporating technological, economic, social, environmental, and institutional dimensions. First, each dimension is explored, substantiated based on a blockchain-based energy system case in Japan. Concrete challenges of scaling this case toward 2050 and potential opportunities in overcoming these challenges are discussed, leveraging extensive literature review. Finally, an overview of strategic indications is suggested. The findings of this paper present initial indications on challenges and opportunities to overcome them based on a multi-dimensional overview. It is suggested that the factors identified across the dimensions are interrelated. This would in turn call for coherent innovation management and multistakeholder innovation ecosystems. Living Labs and regulatory sandboxes are prospective foundations to support such ecosystems, and enable informed decision-making among both private and public sector actors. At large, it is suggested that a holistic and pragmatic approach can benefit the application and scalability of blockchain in the energy transition.

27 Managing workflow of customer requirements using machine learning

Customer requirements – product specifications issued by the customer – organize the dialog between suppliers and customers and, hence, affect the dynamics of supply networks. These large and complex documents are frequently updated over time, while changes are seldom marked by the customers who issue the requirements. The lack of structure and defined responsibilities, thus, demands an expert to manually process the requirements. Here, the possibility to improve the usual workflow with machine learning algorithms is explored. The whole requirements management process has two major bottlenecks, which can be automatized. The first one, detecting changes, can be accomplished via a document comparison tool. The second one, recognizing the responsibilities and assigning them to the right department, can be solved with standard machine learning algorithms. Here, such algorithms are applied to a dataset obtained from a global automotive industry supplier. The proposed method improves the requirements management process by reducing an expert’s workload and thus decreasing the time for processing one document was reduced from 2 weeks to 1 h. Moreover, the method gives a high accuracy of department assignment and can self-improve once implemented into a requirements management system. Although the machine learning methods are very popular nowadays, they are seldom used to improve business processes in real companies, especially in the case of processes that did not require digitalization in the past. Here we show, how such methods can solve some of the management problems and improve their workflow.

28 Advanced DNA fingerprint genotyping based on a model developed from real chip electrophoresis data

Large-scale comparative studies of DNA fingerprints prefer automated chip capillary electrophoresis over conventional gel planar electrophoresis due to the higher precision of the digitalization process. However, the determination of band sizes is still limited by the device resolution and sizing accuracy. Band matching, therefore, remains the key step in DNA fingerprint analysis. Most current methods evaluate only the pairwise similarity of the samples, using heuristically determined constant thresholds to evaluate the maximum allowed band size deviation; unfortunately, that approach significantly reduces the ability to distinguish between closely related samples. This study presents a new approach based on global multiple alignments of bands of all samples, with an adaptive threshold derived from the detailed migration analysis of a large number of real samples. The proposed approach allows the accurate automated analysis of DNA fingerprint similarities for extensive epidemiological studies of bacterial strains, thereby helping to prevent the spread of dangerous microbial infections.

29 Machine learning in oil and gas; a SWOT analysis approach

Digitalization of workflows using machine learning and advanced analytics is the new go-to strategy to add business value in the oil and gas industry. Enterprises strive to embrace these new technologies; but struggle to put their models in production, deliver tangible results and obtain favorable returns on investment. This paper reviews some of the recent developments and practices in this area and offers a SWOT analysis for strategic management and technology enablement. It is concluded that to reap the full benefits of ML in mission-critical tasks, oil and gas industry must leverage the latest technology developments, have a consistent strategic focus and build agile and collaborative teams of data scientists and domain experts.
