1 Message personalization and real-time adaptation as next innovations in sport sponsorship management? How run-of-play and team affiliation affect viewer response

The digitization of sports content and technological innovations in sports media offer disruptive new ways to adapt sponsor messages to real-time events during live broadcasts. To date, sponsorship management mostly ignores the run-of-play and viewers’ team affiliation. This paper seeks to demonstrate how a dynamic management approach can contribute to greater sponsor message efficiency. For this purpose, real-time data were collected during live broadcasts of the 2018 soccer World Cup. Arousal was captured using changes in heart rate, attention to sponsor brands was measured via eye tracking, and in-play betting odds were continuously obtained from a sports betting website. Mixed models predict viewer arousal and sponsor brand attention from biometric and betting data. Evidence is provided for how run-of-play and viewer characteristics affect sponsor message communication outcomes. The applicability of the models for distinctive sponsor exposure tactics is demonstrated, and the theoretical and managerial implications are outlined.

2 Digital transformation: Five recommendations for the digitally conscious firm

Digital transformation is one of the key challenges facing contemporary businesses. The need to leverage digital technology to develop and implement new business models forces firms to reevaluate existing capabilities, structures, and culture in order to identify what technologies are relevant and how they will be enacted in organizational processes and business offerings. More often than not, these profound changes require firms to revisit old truths as they develop strategies that thread the needle between beneficial innovation and harmful disruption. This article uses the Internet of Things (IoT) as a backdrop to demonstrate the concerns associated with transformative technologies and offers five recommendations as to how firms can develop the strategies needed for digital transformation and become digitally conscious: (1) Start small and build on firsthand benefits; (2) team up and create competitive advantage from brand recognition; (3) engage in standardization efforts; (4) take responsibility for data ownership and ethics; and (5) own the change and ensure organization-wide commitment. As such, this article shows that digital transformation should be a top management priority and a defining trait of corporate business strategy, and that by becoming digitally conscious, firms may get a head start on their transformation journey.

3 Potentials of Blockchain Technologies in Supply Chain Management – A Conceptual Model

Meanwhile the rapidly advancing digitization affects almost all areas of society and business. This development is based in particular on the omni-present use of digital information technology. One of these technologies awarded with special potential related to business is the distributed ledger technology. The objective of this study is to investigate influences on the potentials of blockchain technology, being one distributed ledger technology, in the area of supply chain management. An empirical, qualitative data collection attained through expert interviews forms the data basis. The conceptual model is derived by using Grounded Theory Methodology to evaluate the interviews. Important influencing factors (trust, efficiency, costs, control, privacy, scalability) for the potential of blockchain technology in supply chain management and moderating effects (use case, knowledge, collaboration, regulations) form the conceptual model in order to deduce recommendations for business.© 2020 The Authors. صنعت خدماتی از جمله خطوط هواپیمایی، آژانس های مسافرتی و هتل ها، از اولین اتخاذ کنندگان فرآیند دیجیتالی شدن هستند. این دیجیتالی شدن یک بخش جدید را در صنعت گردشگری ایجاد کرده است که گردشگری الکترونیک نام دارد( که زین پس به صورت ای-توریسم مطرح می شود). گردشگری الکترونیک به ارائه همه خدمات گردشگری با استفاده از یک پلتفرم واحد اشاره دارد. سیر تکاملی گردشگری الکترونیک شیوه و استراتژی کاری کسب و کارها را تغییر داده است و به صورت مستقیم بر رفتار تامین کنندگان و همچنین رفتار مصرفی مصرف کنندگان تاثیر گذاشته است. اکثر پلتفرم های آنلاین رویکرد گردشگری آنلاین را تایید کرده اند و سیستم های توزیع سنتی شان را به فرآیندهای توزیع دیجیتال تغییر داده اند. به کارگیری پلتفرم های دیجیتال، خدمات توریسم را برای همه بخش های بازار در دسترس قرار داده است و مصرف بالای خدمات گردشگری را به ثبت رسانده است. در حقیقت، فعالیت های گردشگری بین المللی در طول 10 سال گذشته رشد سریعی داشته است و نسبت به سال 2007 دو برابر شده است. این مقاله در مورد تاثیر تحول دیجیتال در صنعت گردشگری با افزایش رفتارهای کارآفرینانه تامین کنندگان از یک طرف و تاثیرگذاری فرهنگ مصرف مسافران/گردشگران از طرف دیگر بحث می کند. یک رویکرد کیفی با انجام مصاحبه های عمیق از مدیران اجرایی بخش گردشگری برای ایجاد ارتباط بین گردشگری الکترونیک با کارآفرینی صورت پذیرفت. علاوه بر این، یک پرسشنامه نیز بین مشتریان گردشگری الکترونیک به منظور درک الگو و فرهنگ مصرفی شان توزیع شد. هدف این مقاله تصدیق اهمیت دیجیتال سازی گردشگری در تقویت نوآوری و کارآفرینی در صنعت گردشگری است.

5 The digital transformation of innovation and entrepreneurship: Progress, challenges and key themes

The emergence of novel and powerful digital technologies, digital platforms and digital infrastructures has transformed innovation and entrepreneurship in significant ways. Beyond simply opening new opportunities for innovators and entrepreneurs, digital technologies have broader implications for value creation and value capture. Research aimed at understanding the digital transformation of the economy needs to incorporate multiple and cross-levels of analysis, embrace ideas and concepts from multiple fields/disciplines, and explicitly acknowledge the role of digital technologies in transforming organizations and social relationships. To help realize this research agenda, we identify three key themes related to digitization—openness, affordances, and generativity—and, outline broad research issues relating to each. We suggest that such themes that are innate to digital technologies could serve as a common conceptual platform that allows for connections between issues at different levels as well as the integration of ideas from different disciplines/areas. We then summarize the contributions of the 11 papers presented in this Special Issue relating them to one or more of these themes and outlining their implications for future research.

7 Aligning knowledge sharing interventions with the promotion of firm success: The need for SHRM to balance tensions and challenges

Knowledge sharing plays a key role in facilitating organizational goals. However, the extensive digitization of employee knowledge can potentially undermine the full realization of the premises for sustainable competitive advantage advanced by the knowledge-based view. As a corollary, it is crucial that the generation and exchange of knowledge remains continuous, but this presents tensions and challenges for management. Thus, the roles of knowledge management interventions and recognition and reward in influencing knowledge-sharing views and behaviors are examined in this paper through the investigation of four propositions. The findings reveal tensions that extend beyond firm borders and shape employee views and behaviors in relation to strategic knowledge management initiatives. In addressing the challenges presented, a framework for enhancing and sustaining knowledge-based success is developed, which contributes to the refinement of the knowledge-based view and strategic HRM aligned with it.

8 Virtual currency as an inclusive monetary innovation for the unbanked poor

The narrative about the future of money in developing countries is dominated by international financial institutions (IFIs) and their affiliates, multinational payment service providers, mobile network operators and academia. Most have reduced the future of money or monetary needs of the unbanked to the eradication of cash by digitization. In contrast to this techno-centric narrative, in this article, I situate the future of money in a new sociotechnical model which I refer to as the quantity, quality and public authority deficit (QPAD) hypothesis. It recognizes three disadvantages (or deficits) from the use of money: quantitative limits, which relates to the fact that its capacity to act as medium of exchange, is conditional on its availability; a qualitative deficit, involving the failure to embody attributes of transacting parties (identity, reputation etc.); and a public authority deficit, represented by weak central authority involvement in addressing the monetary needs of the unbanked poor. On this basis, any future inclusive monetary innovations which do not address these three deficits will most likely be unsuccessful. These ideas are based on findings from a participatory ethnographic study that draws on a sociology of scientific knowledge framework (Mackenzie, 1996, Pinch and Bijker, 1984, Spinardi, 2008) to evaluate technological properties of the Edinburgh local exchange trading scheme (LETS)-issued virtual currency. This currency is compared and contrasted with the properties of government-issued money.

9 Who benefits and how? Public expectations of public benefits from data-intensive health research

The digitization of society and academic research endeavours have led to an explosion of interest in the potential uses of population data in research. Alongside this, increasing attention is focussing on the conditions necessary for maintaining a social license for research practices. Previous research has pointed to the importance of demonstrating ‘‘public benefits’’ from research for maintaining public support, yet there has been very little consideration of what the term ‘‘public benefits’’ means or what public expectations of ‘‘public benefits’’ are. In order to address this pressing issue a series of deliberative workshops with members of the public were held across Scotland in May and June 2017. The workshops aimed to engage a cross-section of the Scottish population in in-depth discussions of the ways that the public – or publics – might benefit from data-intensive health research. The findings reported here discuss workshop participants’ understandings and expectations of health research; who they considered to be ‘‘the public’’ that should benefit from health research and; in what ways they felt ‘‘the public’’ should benefit. Workshop participants’ preference was clearly for the widest possible public benefit to be felt by all, but they also acknowledged the value in research aiming to primarily benefit vulnerable groups within society. A key focus of discussions was the extent to which workshop participants were confident that potential public benefits would be realised. A crucial consideration then is the extent to which mechanisms and political support are in place to realise and maximise the public benefits of data-intensive health research.

10 From digitization to the age of acceleration: On information technology and tourism

This essay presents an overview of the research development over the last twenty years on information tech nology and tourism. It argues that knowledge created in the last two decades can be characterized as consisting of two distinct eras, i.e., Digitization (1997–2006) and Age of Acceleration (2007–2016), which reflected the general understanding of how technology has transformed our society and economy. Knowledge development within each of these eras is examined in terms of the technological conditions, dominant paradigms, main research questions, and influential discipline and research approaches. Particularly, it recognizes the shift of our view of information technology in tourism research from a primarily a marketing-driven tool to a knowledge creation tool due to new technological conditions such as the smartphone, drone, wearables, new connectivity and big data. Finally, this essay discusses possible future research problems and challenges our existing views of the relationship between information technology and tourism.
