1 Changing the game to compete: Innovations in the fashion retail industry from the disruptive business model
Unprecedented competition and emergent technologies have posed a challenge to many traditional retailers in recent years. Yet within this competitive environment, emerging innovative business models have thrived and successfully disrupted the industry. We analyze the nature of disruptive business-model innovations and the ways they disrupt the fashion retail industry. To that end, we examine three disruptors in the industry: born-digital brands, AI-enabled demand forecasting and product design, and collaborative consumption. After introducing the concept of disruptive business-model innovation, we discuss the three disruptors’ effects on the fashion industry. We find that all of these models keenly answer fundamental needs unmet by current business models, such as offering quality products at a competitive price, curated services, and sustainable consumption. At the same time, all three disruptors suggest effective operation models for handling demand uncertainty, inventory management, and timely responses to the market, all of which are inherent issues for current push supply chains and forecast-based, inventory-driven systems. Based on this analysis, we discuss important implications for both academics and industry practitioners.

2 The blockchain technology and the scope of its application in hospitality operations
The recently emerged concept of the blockchain technology (BCT) can disrupt the traditional realm of tourism and hospitality operations. While some research has looked into the implications of BCT for tourism management and marketing, no studies have explicitly considered the scope of its application in the context of hospitality operations management. This is arguably a major omission as available evidence points at the foremost potential of BCT to affect the nature of hospitality business. This study partially plugs this knowledge gap and, byreviewing examples of existing applications of BCT in various economic sectors and across different consumption markets, evaluates its potential for future integration into hospitality operations management. The framework of prospective use of BCT in the hospitality industry alongside the related organisational, institutional and technological challenges that need to be overcome for its wider industrial adoption are outlined.

3 Disruptive innovation and entrepreneurship in emerging economics
Disruptive innovation has increasingly become a core subject for researchers across disciplines, from economics to engineering and technology. This is understandable as companies all over the world over are facing contemporary challenges such as intense global competition, rising market volatility, constantly changing consumer demand, and shortened product life cycles. Under these conditions, disruptive innovation and disruptive innovation-based entrepreneurship are increasingly becoming a strategic means for achieving sustainable company growth and competitiveness. Yet, limited research exists today on disruptive innovations in or by emerging economies. Therefore, this Special Issue in Journal of Engineering and Technology Management on Disruptive Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economics is devoted to publishing original research that enriches our knowledge about the nature of disruptive innovation and entrepreneurship related with emerging economies, as well as their models, antecedents and economic, social and organizational consequences. The issue also highlights key research areas of disruptive innovation and innovation-based entrepreneurship for future scholarship, inviting more systematic research on the important areas.

4 Blockchain as a disruptive technology for business: A systematic review
Blockchain is the latest ‘disruptive innovation’ that has caught scholars’ attention. It is the underlying technology for Bitcoin and other digital currencies. Stakeholders like developers, entrepreneurs, and technology enthusiasts claim blockchain has the potential to reconfigure the contemporary economic, legal, political and cultural landscape. Skeptics claim the concept and its applications remain ambiguous and uncertain. Business scholars began publishing studies on the emergence and impact of blockchain, bitcoin, and related projects in 2014. In this study, we conduct a PRISMA guided systematic review of blockchain research in the business literature from 2014 to 2018. Our results show a rapid increase of studies over the five year period. The findings also convey key insights about the current state of scholarly investigation on blockchain, including its top benefits and challenges for business and society. We found that blockchain remains an early-stage domain of research in terms of theoretical grounding, methodological diversity, and empirically grounded work. We suggest research directions to improve our understanding of the state of blockchain and advance future research of this increasingly important and expansive area.

5 Motivations and constraints of Airbnb consumers: Findings from a mixed-methods approach
Airbnb is widely recognized as a disruptive innovation in the tourism industry. While separate studies have examined various factors affecting consumers adoption of Airbnb, the literature has largely focused on a handful of factors in isolation. Adopting a sequential mixed-methods approach, this study proposes a comprehensive conceptual model integrating the literature and findings of a qualitative study and subsequently tests the model via a national survey. The results suggest that, for motivations, price value, enjoyment, and home benefits significantly explain overall attitude toward Airbnb. As for constraints, distrust is the only factor that significantly predicts overall attitude, while insecurity is directly related to behavioral intentions. Overall attitude, perceived behavioral control, and subjective norms, such as social influence and trend affinity, predict behavioral intentions. This study contributes to the literature by simultaneously examining the predictive power of both motivations and constraints of Airbnb consumers in explaining overall attitude and purchase behavior.

6 Governance of big data collaborations: How to balance regulatory compliance and disruptive innovation
Big data is an important driver of disruptive innovation that may increase organizations competitive advantage. To create innovative data combinations and decrease investments, big data is often shared among organizations, crossing organizational boundaries. However, these big data collaborations need to balance disruptive innova tion and compliance to a strict data protection regime in the EU. This paper investigates how inter-organiza tional big data collaborations arrange and govern their activities in the context of this dilemma. We con ceptualize big data as inter-organizational systems and build on IS and Organization Theory literature to develop four archetypical governance arrangements: Market, Hierarchy, Bazaar and Network. Subsequently, these ar rangements are investigated in four big data collaboration use cases. The contributions of this study to literature are threefold. First, we conceptualize the organization behind big data collaborations as IOS governance. Second, we show that the choice for an inter-organizational governance arrangement highly depends on the institutional pressure from regulation and the type of data that is shared. In this way, we contribute to the limited body of research on the antecedents of IOS governance. Last, we highlight with four use cases how the principles of big data, specifically data maximization, clash with the principles of EU data protection regulation. Practically, our study provides guidelines for IT and innovation managers how to arrange and govern the sharing of data among multiple organizations.

7 Improving educational and financial effectiveness through innovation: A case study of Southern New Hampshire University’s College for America
This article explores an innovative student-centric learning model to more fully understand the compatibility of education quality improvement and sustainability. More specifically, this paper discusses findings from qualitative, case study research that investigates Southern New Hampshire University’s direct assessment competency-based education model: College for America. Competency-based education asserts the value of its credentials through the assurance of proficiency in employer-defined competencies and adherence to academically rigorous quality standards. Through mission-driven integration of principles of disruptive innovation in the strategic development of College for America, SNHU has realized a learning model with significant implications for students, employers, and institutional sustainability. The findings of this study suggest it is possible and advantageous for institutions to balance academic and business perspectives in the pursuit of educational and financial effectiveness.

8 Technological regimes and firm survival
Article history:Received 11 April 2014Received in revised form 17 June 2015 Accepted 24 September 2015Keywords:Firm survival Technological regimes Active learningEntry size and timingJEL classification:L60 L20 O30 M13This paper investigates whether the type of technological regime moderates the effects of entry tim- ing, entry size (i.e., initial resources), and active (post-entry) learning on firm survival. By analyzing a unique dataset of newly founded Korean manufacturing firms, we find that the effects of the factors influencing firm survival differ substantially across technological regimes. Specifically, entry size has the greatest positive effect on firm survival under the regime characterized by low technological opportu- nity and high R&D appropriability, under which opportunities for disruptive innovation are stagnant and the advantages of initial resources are more likely to persist. Post-entry active learning through R&D, on the contrary, has the greatest effect on firm survival under the regime of high technological opportu- nity and low R&D appropriability, under which active learning through contemporaneous R&D effort is more crucial for firm survival than initial resource advantages mostly due to the possibility of creative destruction.© 2015 Elsevier B.V. 9 Creative destruction or mere niche support? Innovation policy mixes for sustainability transitions
Article history:Received 3 October 2014Received in revised form 16 July 2015 Accepted 27 September 2015Keywords: Innovation policy Policy mixSustainability transitions Energy efficiencyMotors of innovationTechnological innovation system (TIS)Recently, there has been an increasing interest in policy mixes in innovation studies. While it has long been acknowledged that the stimulation of innovation and technological change involves different types of policy instruments, how such instruments form policy mixes has only recently become of interest. We argue that an area in which policy mixes are particularly important is the field of sustainability transitions. Transitions imply not only the development of disruptive innovations but also of policies aiming for wider change in socio-technical systems. We propose that ideally policy mixes for transitions include elements of ‘creative destruction’, involving both policies aiming for the ‘creation’ of new and for ‘destabilising’ the old. We develop a novel analytical framework including the two policy mix dimensions (‘creation’ and ‘destruction’) by broadening the technological innovation system functions approach, and specifically by expanding the concept of ‘motors of innovation’ to ‘motors of creative destruction’. We test this framework by analysing ‘low energy’ policy mixes in Finland and the UK. We find that both countries have diverse policy mixes to support energy efficiency and reduce energy demand with instruments to cover all functions on the creation side. Despite the demonstrated need for such policies, unsurprisingly, destabilising functions are addressed by fewer policies, but there are empirical examples of such policies in both countries. The concept of ‘motors of creative destruction’ is introduced to expand innovation and technology policy debates to go beyond policy mixes consisting of technology push and demand pull instruments, and to consider a wider range of policy instruments combined in a suitable mix which may contribute to sustainability transitions.© 2015 The Authors.
