Linking business model design and operational performance: The mediating role of supply chain integration

Despite the increasing interest in the role of business model design (BMD) in improving performance, its in- fluence on operational performance remains unexplored, as do the underlying mechanisms of such effects. Drawing on dynamic capability theory, we propose that supply chain integration (SCI), including external integration and internal integration, mediates the relationship between BMD and operational performance. Matched survey data and objective performance data were collected from 131 Chinese manufacturing firms in three waves to test our research model. The key results are that external integration fully mediates the effect of novelty-centered BMD on operational performance, and efficiency-centered BMD directly improves operational performance. Theoretical and practical insights on how BMD and SCI can be leveraged to support operational performance are discussed.

Facilitating artificial intelligence powered supply chain analytics through alliance management during the pandemic crises in the B2B context

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted global supply chains and exposed weak links in the chains far beyond what most people have witnessed in their living memory. The scale of disruption affects every nation and industry, and the sudden and dramatic changes in demand and supply that have occurred during the pandemic crisis clearly differentiate its impact from other crises. Using the dynamic capabilities view, we studied alliance management capability (AMC) and artificial intelligence (AI) driven supply chain analytics capability (AI-SCAC) as dynamic capabilities, under the moderating effect of environmental dynamism. We tested our four research hypotheses using survey data collected from the Indian auto components manufacturing industry. For data analysis we used Warp PLS 7.0 (a variance-based structural equation modelling tool). We found that alliance management capability under the mediating effect of artificial intelligence-powered supply chain analytics capability enhances the operational and financial performance of the organization. Moreover, we also observed that the alliance management capability has a significant effect on artificial intelligence-powered supply chain analytics capability under the moderating effect of environmental dynamism. The results of our study provide a nuanced understanding of the dynamic capabilities and the relational view of organization. Finally, we noted the limitations of our study and provide numerous research directions that may help answer some of the questions that arise from our study.

Impact of ambidexterity of blockchain technology and social factors on new product development: A supply chain and Industry 4:0 perspective

This study develops a technology and social capital process aided product innovation conceptual model based on dynamic capability and supply chain ambidexterity theory. The strategy of organizational ambidexterity unbalancing technological and relational social capital factors between buyers and suppliers leads to a higher level of digital manufacturing capabilities and enhances buyers’ innovation potential, considering the sustainable practices in their processes to cope with Industry 4.0 manufacturing processes and sustainability challenges. The study empirically validates the model using data collected from 379 French manufacturing companies. This is the first study that examines how buyers perceive the role of blockchain technology in exploring and exploiting innovation management in the Industry 4.0 era. The study advances understanding on the theory of ambidex-terity of supply chains in buyer–supplier relationships. The study results show the positive effect between internal integration and blockchain technology as well as relational social capital factors in buyer–supplier relationships. The findings underscore the critical role of relational and technological capital in buyer–supplier relationships, specifically to act as a catalyst for exploiting internal capabilities to achieve the innovation targets. The unique findings state blockchain technology mediation is dominant in exploiting the internal capabilities and benefits buyers’ innovation orientation.

Reshaping competitive advantages with analytics capabilities in service systems

Big data analytics capability can reshape competitive advantages for a service system. However, little is known about how to develop and operationalize a service system analytics capability (SSAC) model. Drawing on the resource based view (RBV), dynamic capability theory (DCT) and the emerging literature on big data analytics, this study develops and validates an SSAC model and frames its impact on competitive advantages using a thematic analysis, delphi studies (n=35) and a survey (n=251) . The main ﬁndings illuminate the varying importance of three primary dimensions (i.e., service system analytics management capability, technology capability and personnel capability) and various respective sub dimensions (i.e., service system planning, in- vestment, coordination, control, connectivity, compatibility, modularity, technology management knowledge, technical knowledge, business knowledge and relationship knowledge) in developing overall analytics cap- abilities for a service system. The ﬁndings also conﬁrm the strong mediating eﬀects of three dynamic capabilities (i.e., market sensing, seizing and reconﬁguring) in establishing competitive advantages. We critically discuss the implications of our ﬁndings for theory, methods and practice with limitations and future research directions.1.0.

Big data analytics as an operational excellence approach to enhance sustainable supply chain performance

Operations management is a core organizational function involved in the management of activities to produce and deliver products and services. Appropriate operations decisions rely on assessing and using information; a task made more challenging in the Big Data era. Effective management of data (big data analytics; BDA), along with staff capabilities (the talent capability in the use of big data) support firms to leverage big data analytics and organizational learning in support of sustainable supply chain management outcomes. The current study uses dynamic capability theory as a foundation for evaluating the role of BDA capability as an operational excellence approach in improving sustainable supply chain performance. We surveyed mining executives in the emerging economy of South Africa and received 520 valid responses (47% response rate). We used Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) to analyze the data. The findings show that big data analytics management capabilities have a strong and significant effect on innovative green product development and sustainable supply chain outcomes. Big data analytics talent capabilities have a weaker but still significant effect on employee development and sustainable supply chain outcomes. Innovation and learning performance affect sustainable supply chain performance, and supply chain innovativeness has an important moderating role. A contribution of the study is identifying two pathways that managers can use to improve sustainable supply chain outcomes in the mining industry, based on big data analytics capabilities.

Missing link between sustainability collaborative strategy and supply chain performance: Role of dynamic capability

Formulation of right strategies is believed to be able to bring sustainable performance across triple bottom line (TBL), i.e., economic, environmental and social aspects within and across organizations. The purpose of this research is to investigate the role of misaligned collaboration and dynamic capabilities on TBL performance. Misaligned collaboration signifies those configurations of collaboration that deviate from ideal profile of collaboration. The ideal profile of collaboration corresponds to superior performance. Collaboration has been operationalized through joint planning and resource sharing (JPRS) and collaborative culture (CC) which brings relational aspects into collaboration. Specifically, this research provides important extensions to the theory of profile deviation and dynamic capabilities (DC) perspective in the context of sustainable supply chain performance and misaligned collaboration utilizing the empirical evidence. Uniqueness of the proposed model is established by comparing with four other alternate models. We find both JPRSmisalign (misalignment of JPRS from the ideal profile) and CCmisalign (misalignment of CC from the ideal profile) influence all dimensions of TBL through DCs. Only direct influence of CCmisalign on operational and social performance is significant. Results convey the need of building DCs when collaboration is misaligned with its ideal profile, and this misalignment produces detrimental effects on DCs and TBL performance. This research contributes significantly by building unique model to develop and maintain sustainability. Further, theoretical and managerial contributions are highlighted and contested with existing knowledge.

Transforming entrepreneurial posture into a superior first product market position via dynamic capabilities and TMT prior start-up experience

First product commercialization is the first entrepreneurial act of new technology ventures. However, little is known about mechanisms that transform these firms entrepreneurial posture into first product advantage. Building on the dynamic capability view of the firm, this study examines the role of capabilities exploitation (i.e., in the form of complementarity), top management team start-up experience, cross-functional collaboration and information and communication technology assets in driving entrepreneurial posture toward first product ad vantage. A multi-informant study of 137 B2B new technology ventures was undertaken. The results show that entrepreneurial posture can contribute to first product advantage indirectly by fostering R&D-marketing cap ability complementarity. Furthermore, our results indicate that the entrepreneurial posture - capabilities com plementarity relationship is augmented when top management team possess prior start-up experience. Finally, our findings indicate that the benefits of R&D-marketing capability complementarity for first product advantage are contingent on the exploitation of cross-functional collaboration and ICT capabilities.

The role of ostensive and performative routine aspects in dynamic capability deployment at different organizational levels

This study clarifies how dynamic capabilities work in modifying operational capabilities at dif ferent organizational levels. While there is good understanding that routines that make up op erational capabilities possess ostensive and performative aspects, whether the same applies to dynamic capabilities is unclear. In addition, there is only a limited understanding of how dy namic capabilities link to operational capabilities in terms of these two routine aspects, in gen eral, and at different organizational levels, in particular. Our findings suggest that ostensive and performative routine aspects explain the way in which dynamic capabilities work in modifying operational capabilities. They also reveal that the pattern of the ostensive or performative routine aspects in dynamic capability deployment at a selected organizational level correspond with that associated with operational capabilities at the same level.

Project portfolio management (PPM) bridges strategy and project management. Traditional research in PPM has primarily investigated the rational, top-down and structural aspects of strategizing. By doing so, it has failed to focus on the underlying practices that are triggered by the strategy and how these practices frame strategy implementation. Practice-based research provides a methodological lens to explore the reality of strategic enactment through the project portfolio. Practice-based perspectives are under-represented in PPM research; therefore the aim of this paper is to provide an agenda for further practice-based research in PPM. Central to this agenda is a concern with various aspects of practice, including its discursivity, representation, dynamic capabilities, leadership and materiality.

Dynamic capabilities of biologics firms in the emerging business market: Perspective of dynamic capabilities evident

The biologics industry constitutes an emerging business market, and the innovative and complex tacit knowledge of this market is understood by very few networked actors. In particular, information related to the resources and capabilities of biologics firms is considered highly confidential and is not accessible to the public. This study investigated five of the top ten biologics firms in the Asia–Pacific region. The firms were examined from the `perspective of dynamic capabilities. More specifically, the dynamic capabilities of the firms were explored using a four-stage coding analysis based on grounded theory. A theoretical framework and relevant concepts and theoretical propositions were developed in this study. Thus, this study proposes a conceptual framework that consists of uncommon knowledge, knowledge network, interaction factors, and mobility capability and describes five theoretical propositions and their influence on market competitiveness. This study found that the complex and dynamic market environment in question is driven by dynamic relations among various interaction factors.
