1 Internal benchmarking to assess the cost efficiency of a broiler production system combining data envelopment analysis and throughput accounting

Economic efficiency assessments based on Data Envelopment Analysis are scarce compared to technical effi- ciency studies, even in for-profit firms. Some aspects justify this scarcity, such as the difficulty to estimate ac- curate prices, given their variability over time. In many situations, external benchmarking is hindered due to organizations’ unique nature and the barriers to sharing information considered critical to competitiveness. The use of internal benchmarking can overcome some of these difficulties. This study conducted an internal benchmarking analysis of a broiler production system, focusing on cost efficiency. We conducted longitudinal case-based research over six years (2014–2019). The concepts of throughput accounting of the Theory of Con- straints were applied to structure the DEA model (inputs, prices, and output). The Critical Incident Technique was used to explore the effects of interventions on the production system’s cost efficiency. The results show that the broiler production system could reduce 32% of the total cost per unit of production if the balance of inputs suggested by the DEA evaluation was used. This work contributes to the literature by showing the potential of internal benchmarking to explore the evolution of cost efficiency over time. From a practical perspective, this study is important for managers by showing how to measure the impact of management actions on performance, providing valuable information to guide continuous improvement.

2 Intelligent energy management in off-grid smart buildings with energy interaction

The energy interaction between smart homes can be a solution for developing renewable energy systems in residential sections and optimal energy consumption in homes. The main objectives of such energy interactions are to increase consumer participation in energy management‘ boost economic efficiency‘ increase the user’s satisfaction by choosing between electricity sellers and buyers‘ and reduce the electricity purchased from the grid especially at peak hours. Thus, the innovations of this study includes defining an energy exchange method between smart buildings in an off-grid mode considering renewable energy systems, considering both thermal and electrical equilibrium and studying the lightning loads. it is assumed, here, that smart homes are off-grid‘ and the critical loads are supplied by the energy transfer between the homes using mixed integer linear programming. A compromise between the cost and time interval for using home appliances is considered to provide consumer’s comfort. An objective function is introduced considering programmable and non-programmable loads‘ thermal and electrical storages and lighting loads aiming to optimize the cost of energy between different smart buildings. Based on the method, which is tested in two different cases not only does the total cost of the smart buildings decrease but also the cost is reduced significantly when lightning loads are managed.

3 Maritime transport and economic growth: Interconnection and influence (an example of the countriesin the Caspian sea coast; Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Iran)

The article reflects the results of the study on the relationship between the development of maritime transport and the dynamics of economic growth in the countries of the Caspian Sea coast. Among other things, the authors analyzed the impact of maritime transport on the economic development of such countries as Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Iran. Special attention is paid to the study of the close relationship between the factors that negatively affect the economic growth of the countries under study and the internal factors that characterize the system of maritime transport and the formation of a system of performance indicators for the economies of the Caspian Sea. The results of the study showed that the implementation of projects to improve the development of maritime transport by the management creates conditions for sustainable economic growth of the countries in the Caspian basin.

4 Day-ahead energy management and feeder reconfiguration for microgrids with CCHP and energy storage systems

Energy management featuring distribution feeder reconfiguration (DFR) and reactive power control, improves the technical and economic efficiency of microgrids. The present work proposes a framework that leverages scenarios to jointly manage the real and reactive power dispatches of the controllable generation resources as well as the topology of the distribution feeder. Multiple operation measures are optimized including the operation cost, real power loss, the voltage stability index (VSI), and the greenhouse gas emissions of the microgrid. Hybrid Big Bang- Big Crunch (HBB-BC) algorithm is used to solve the formulated optimization problem. Nondispatchable and dispatchable distributed generation units (DGs), as well as the battery and thermal energy storage systems (BESS and TESS), are considered as a hybrid energy system. Combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) units are considered as dispatchable DGs and wind and solar photovoltaic generations are considered as non-dispatchable DGs. The efficiency of the proposed model and solution algorithm is investigated using a 33-bus microgrid, and the simulation outcomes are discussed.

5 Is the private sector more efficient? Big data analytics of construction waste management sectoral efficiency

Efficiency disparity between the public and private sectors is a non-trivial issue that concerns fundamental choices of socio-political-economic systems. Waste management academia and industry also wrestle with issues relating to the choice between public and private sectors. To examine the disparity exclusively caused by “sector”, in statistics language, one needs data that is sufficiently big to control many other confounders, e.g., sites, project types, and construction technologies. This paper attempts to ascertain the construction waste management (CWM) efficiency disparity between the public and private sectors by using big data in Hong Kong. The waste disposal records of 132 projects, including 70 public and 62 private projects, were extracted and analysed. By comparing the waste generation flows (WGFs) and accumulative WGFs, it is found that, by and large, there is no significant efficiency disparity in CWM between the two sectors. However, a closer investigation discovered that the private sector outperforms their public counterpart in demolition projects, while the latter performs better in foundation and new building projects. Although there are private projects with higher CWM performance, their divergence between the best and average projects are larger than public ones. Such findings thus reject casual remarks that the private sector is more efficient in CWM. The underlying reasons maybe the waste management index practice promoted in public projects while the private sector is often incentivized to perform better CWM to save waste disposal levies. Future research is recommended to delve into the causes of the efficiency disparity and introduce CWM interventions accordingly.

7 Coordinating energy management for multiple energy hubs: From a transaction perspective

The coupled multiple energy carriers integrated with distributed energy units, e.g., energy converters, renewable energy, and storages have offered energy hubs high flexibility and independent controllability. In this paper, a decentralized transactive based energy management framework enabling coordination among multiple energy hubs (MEHs) is developed. Aiming to improve the economic performance of the interconnected energy hub system, a peer to peer (P2P) transaction platform is established for the self-organized trading of MEH. Particularly, a generic scheme for the generation of transaction prices is specified for the energy hub, which is firstly integrated into a modified alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) method for the realization of achieving P2P transaction consensus amongst MEHs. Furthermore, this price scheme offers high traceability of energy-price flows inner EHs operation process and external energy transaction activities, providing transparent price signals in the local P2P market. A three-energy hub system is simulated, and numerical case studies have demonstrated the proposed coordination scheme actively encourages individual EH to enroll in the P2P transaction scheme, offering all EHs a win-win transaction framework and improving the global economic efficiency of the networked system.

8 Safety management efficiency of Chinas coal enterprises and its influencing factors Based on the DEA-Tobit two-stage model

In order to accurately analyze the safety management efficiency of China’s coal enterprises, based on the panel data of 14 coal listed enterprises in 2012–2018, this paper analyzes the overall technical efficiency (TE), pure technical efficiency (PTE) and scale efficiency (SE) of safety management of sample enterprises by the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model, and builds Tobit model of random panel effect to evaluate the impact of business management and safety investment on safety management efficiency. The results show that: in 2012–2018, the average values of TE, PTE and SE of sample enterprises are respectively 0.674, 0.777 and 0.864; all have great room for improvement. The development of PTE and SE in most sample enterprises is unbalanced; TE of sample enterprises does not significantly improve, and shows a trend of rising-decreasing-rising; safety investment, enterprise scale and labor productivity are significantly positively related to safety management technical efficiency, while safety training person time and employees quality are negatively correlated. This paper identified the positive and negative effects of various influencing factors on the safety management efficiency of coal enterprises, and analyzed the main reasons that hinder the improvement of safety efficiency, and puts forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions, which are helpful for coal enterprises to effectively improve their safety management efficiency and economic efficiency.

10 Assessing the eco-efficiency of a circular economy system in Chinas coal mining areas: Emergy and data envelopment analysis

Improving the eco-efficiency of the circular economy system in mining areas has been recognized as the most effective way to reduce the greenhouse effect and achieve sustainable development. Based on the emergy theory and on data envelopment analysis (DEA), this paper adopts the SBM-Undesirable model to evaluate the eco-efficiency of the circular economy system in Chinas largest coal mining area, Shanxi Province, during the period 2006e2015. Emergy flow indices are treated as input and output indices. Eco-efficiency is factorized into economic efficiency and environmental efficiency. The potential for improvement of the circular economy system is analyzed based on input redundancy and output deficiency. The results for the period 2006e2015 indicate the following: (1) both the input and the output of the circular system increase during this period; (2) the increased input relies on mostly imported emergy, and the increase inwaste emergy is lower than the exported emergy; (3) eco-efficiency is invalid except for 2011 and 2012 and exhibits a decreasing trend beginning in 2013; (4) environmental efficiency is invalid over the entire period, and the eco-efficiency level is positively related to the economic efficiency score; and (5) the circular economy system has a larger energy saving space, and the key to achieving sustainability of the circular economy system is output growth.
