1 Blockchain energy: Blockchain in future energy systems

The ongoing, in-depth transformation of the electricity sector towards increased use of alternative, renewable energy sources extends beyond a simple decentralisation drive in the electricity market. The transformation process is characterised by the interplay of old and new technologies from the energy sector as well as structural coupling with other sectors, such as the information and communications technology (ICT), enabling the technology transfer as well as market entry by information technology (IT) actors. Blockchain-based technologies have the potential to play a key role in this transition by offering decentralised interfaces and systems as well as an alternative approach to the current organisation form of the energy market. This paper discusses the applicability and prospects for blockchain-based technologies in the energy sector, which are described using the term “blockchain energy”. For the purposes of this study, blockchain energy encompasses all socio-technical and organisational configurations in the energy sector based on the utilisation of the blockchain principle for energy trading, information storage, and/or increased transparency of energy flows and energy services. In the following chapters, the authors present and discuss the current transformation in the electricity market, followed by a review of the different utilisation possibilities for blockchain technologies in the energy sector and a discussion of the barriers and potential for blockchain energy using a transition studies perspective. Finally, the opportunities and risks of blockchain energy are discussed.

2 Prioritising business model innovation: What needs to change in the United Kingdom energy system to grow low carbon entrepreneurship?

‘What needs to change in the United Kingdom energy system, to allow low carbon business models to thrive?’ Earlier work by the authors has reported that up to £21bn of new financial value could be available to electricity utilities by 2050, in a low-carbon UK power sector. This represents up to 30% of future electricity markets. To capture new value, electricity utility business models need to evolve. This research used an elite ‘decision theatre’ method, in the UK, USA, and Europe, to decide on the most important changes required to the energy system to enable new [low-carbon] utility business models to thrive. The results show that there is substantial agreement on the five requirements for change, these are: (1) Clear national heat and electric transport strategies; (2) Commitment to sufficient carbon prices; (3) Simpler, principles-based regulation across the energy value chain; (4) Accessible markets for flexibility and other energy services; and (5) Managing consumers’ exposure to risk. These were the changes that participants considered most important to foster low-carbon utility business model innovation. This work suggests focusing on business model innovation as opposed to technological innovation could accelerate decarbonisation, and extends the use of the Decision Theatre method in social science energy research.

4 From big data to smart energy services: An application for intelligent energy management

Big data is an ascendant technological concepts and includes smart energy services, such as intelligent energy management, energy consumption prediction and exploitation of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. As a result, big data technologies will have a significant impact in the energy sector. This paper proposes a high level architecture of a big data platform that can support the creation, development, maintenance and exploitation of smart energy services through the utilisation of cross-domain data. The proposed platform enables the simplification of the procedure followed for the information gathering by multiple sources, turning into actionable recommendations and meaningful operational insights for city authorities and local administrations, energy managers and consultants, energy service companies, utilities and energy providers. Α web-based Decision Support System (DSS) has been developed according to the proposed architecture, exploiting multi-sourced data within a smart city context towards the creation of energy management action plans. The pilot application of the developed DSS in three European cities is presented and discussed. This “data-driven” DSS can support energy managers and city authorities for managing their building facilities’ energy performance.

انتظار بزرگی که از شبکه برق هوشمند می رود، این است که با استفاده از جریان دو طرفه ی داده ها و انرژی برقی که با اطلاعات پیشرفته فعال شده است و همچنین با استفاده از ارتباطات و زیرساخت های کنترلی، سرویس های انرژی پایدار را ارائه دهد. یک عنصر مهم از چنین شبکه ی هوشمندی مصرف کننده های آینده نگر هستند، یعنی مصرف کنندگانی که از طریق شبکه، انرژی اضافی را تولید و با سایر کاربران به اشتراک می گذارند. مصرف کننده های آینده نگر نه تنها مهمترین ذینفع در شبکه های هوشمندِ متشکل از مصرف کنندگانِ آینده نگر هستند، بلکه نقشی حیاتی در مدیریتِ حداکثر تقاضا ایفا می کنند. بنابراين، لازم است که به تحقیق و بررسی پیرامونِ مدیریت انرژی مبتنی بر مصرف کننده ی آینده نگر و اشتراک گذاریِ انرژی ( PEMS) و چالش های مرتبط با آن بپردازیم. این بررسی برای درک و تحلیل تاثیر مصرف کننده ها ی آینده نگر در شبکه های هوشمند آینده به ما کمک خواهد کرد. به منظور دستیابی به این اهداف، این مقاله به بررسی جامعِ PEMS (یا مدیریت انرژی مبتنی بر مصرف کننده ی آینده نگر و اشتراک گذاریِ انرژی) در محیط شبکه هوشمند و بررسیِ تأثیرات مرتبط با قابلیت اطمینان سیستم و پایداری انرژی می پردازد. فرایند به اشتراک گذاریِ انرژی میان مصرف کننده های آینده نگر ، شامل دو عنصر کلیدی می باشد: فناوری اطلاعات و ارتباطات و تکنیک های بهینه سازی. این دو عنصر به طور کامل مورد بحث قرار می گیرند تا نیازمندی های اجراییِ PEMS را تحت پوشش قرار دهند. آن دسته از فناوری های مرتط با ارتباطات که در این مقاله ارائه شده اند، عبارتند از: فناوری های سیمی، فناوری های بی سیم، گزینه های کوتاه مدت و بلند مدت در تکنیک های بهینه سازی خطی و غیرخطی، که در زمینه ی PEMS، شرح داده شده اند. در این مقاله، فناوری های مختلف، روش ها و مکانیزم های پذیرفته شده برای PEMS به صورت جامع مورد بحث قرار می گیرند تا به افزایش شهود خوانندگان کمک شود. چالش ها و مسائلی که در جوامع مصرف کننده ی آینده نگر با آنها مواجه هستند، و همچنین مسأله ی اشتراک گذاریِ انرژی، به طور دقیق مورد بررسی قرار گرفته است.

6 Risk analysis and management in power outage and restoration: A literature survey

Societies are highly reliant on power systems for their energy needs. Reliability assessment is performed in both planning and operation of these power systems. Although there has been increasing interest in hardening the power system to be resilient against power outages, the risk of power outages cannot be completely diminished. Numerous models and algorithms are available to predict hazards that subsequently result in loss of energy services to customers. Many quantitative and qualitative approaches to determining restoration strategies in the event of a power outage have been developed. Very few studies have assessed restoration strategies in response to the risk of predicted hazards. As a result of the hurricanes and storms that have damaged critical infrastructures in the U.S. in recent years, this has become a burgeoning area for active research. In this literature survey we present the various studies that have been completed to date and discuss potential areas for future research.
