1 The choice of cooperation mode in the bioenergy supply chain with random biomass feedstock yield

A successful cooperation mode between bioenergy producers and farmers can effectively promote the supply of biomass feedstock, which plays an important role in the bioenergy industry. In this study, we examine two prevailing cooperation modes in bioenergy supply chain, namely contract farming (CF) and land as shares (LS). This study assesses how each cooperation mode influences the planting acreage, the feedstock quality and the profits of supply chain participants. Under CF, the farmer and the bioenergy producer sign a contract in which the bioenergy producer purchases all feedstock produced by the farmer. Under LS, the farmer converts their land use rights into company shares, so that the bioenergy producer will share part of sales revenue with the farmer. First, we find that the optimal planting scale of biomass feedstock under LS is larger than that under CF when the bioenergy market size is sufficiently large. If the market size is relatively small, the supply quantity of biomass feedstock under LS depends on the marginal value of feedstock quality. Second, when the bioenergy market is sufficiently large, the farmer and the bioenergy producer under LS can achieve a win-win situation, which improves the reliability of the bioenergy supply chain. Third, we extend our model to the case where the government implements subsidies for biomass feedstock. We find that when the subsidy is high enough, the biomass feedstock quantity under LS will be larger. In addition, government subsidy does not necessarily improve the profit of all supply chain participants and excessive government subsidy may adversely affect the reliability of the bioenergy supply chain.

2 Analysis of the innovation strategies for green supply chain management in the energy industry using the QFD-based hybrid interval valued intuitionistic fuzzy decision approach

This study aims to analyze the innovation strategies for the green supply chain management with QFD (quality function deployment) multidimensionally. The novelty of the study is to define the criteria of green supply chain for each stage of QFD and propose a hybrid model by IVIF (interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy) DEMATEL (decision making trial and evaluation laboratory) and IVIF MOORA (Multi-Objective Optimization by Ratio Analysis) respectively. The results demonstrate that understanding the customer expectations with customer relation management is the most important innovation strategy for the green supply chain management in en- ergy industry with the consecutive stages of QFD whereas benchmarking the competitive market environment has relatively the last seat in the ranking. Hence, it is recommended that energy companies should have an effective customer relationship management. In this context, these companies should make a detailed analysis to learn what their customers directly expect from them. With the help of this issue, these companies should generate their product and services based on these expectations. Additionally, it is also stated that new service and product development is also essential for energy companies to improve their innovativeness. For this pur- pose, a research and development department should be created, and the qualified people should be employed. Additionally, different opinions should be collected from various parties, such as customers, employees, and suppliers. Since customers who are satisfied will prefer these companies, the energy companies can catch the opportunity to increase their market share.

3 An overview of “Energy þ Internet” in China
مروری بر "انرژی þ اینترنت" در چین-2020
In the current “Internetþ” era, the integration of energy and the Internet is creating crucial opportunities as well as challenges for China. This study aims to provide an overview of “Energy þ Internet” in China, by clarifying its advantages and disadvantages, sorting out its practical business modes, and pointing out the future directions of its management changes. It is found that (1) the traditional energy system dominated by fossil energy has been unable to meet the sustainable development needs of China’s economy. The integration of energy and the Internet has become an important opportunity for the upgrading of China’s energy industry. (2) Compared with traditional single-energy, integrated-energy supply chain management requires more changes. During this process, full coverage of the micro-grid could help realize the coordinated development of integrated-energy supply and demand. (3) In recent years, smart park demonstration pilot projects have gradually been implemented in China, which is driving by policy support and technological innovations. The structure of integrated-energy service plays a key role in the sustainable operation of these smart parks. China’s practices show that the construction of the pilot projects promotes the exploration of energy development paths in areas with different resource endowments. Based on the conclusions, corresponding policy recommendations are provided at the end of the paper.

5 Energy, uncertainty, and entrepreneurship: John D Rockefeller’s sequential approach to transaction costs management in the early oil industry

This article delves into the challenge of successful entrepreneurship in the energy industry under conditions of uncertainty by examining the case of John D Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company, which rapidly seized control of an initially-uncertain industry. It finds that Rockefeller cemented control through a willingness to internalise contextual uncertainty (related to the nature of the energy business) as a stepping stone to managing contractual uncertainty (related to transactions with other parties). This finding suggests that thinking sequentially about the management of contextual and contractual uncertainty aids entrepreneurial success in the field of energy. This suggestion accords with standing calls in the transaction costs literature, which means that findings may generalise to some extent. However, the exploratory nature of the analysis implies the need for further research about the argument’s compatibility with modern energy practices and its generalisability.

6 Applying blockchain in the geoenergy domain: The road to interoperability and standards

Geoenergy sources will continue to be mainstays of the world’s energy mix for many years to come, but the technological and business realities behind these energy sources are changing in two fundamental ways. First, with much of the world’s “easy oil” already consumed, the companies behind geoenergy will have to use increasingly sophisticated technologies to find and deliver these energy sources to the market. Second, the expectations placed upon the geoenergy sector by many of its stakeholders have grown considerably with regards to environmental stewardship, safety, and human welfare. In the face of these kinds of challenges, the industry will require an increasing degree of technological and commercial sophistication to continue to be a part of the world’s sustainable energy mix. Blockchain has emerged as a promising innovation that could potentially play an important role in delivering the kinds of technological and commercial capabilities that the geoenergy sector will need to achieve these ends. In spite of the myriad ways that blockchain could potentially improve the efficiency and sustainability of the geoenergy industry, however, the technology is still evolving, and a few barriers stand in the way of its widespread deployment. This paper puts forward case study evidence from the Intel Corporation and the Energistics Consortium showing what the geoenergy sector can learn about blockchain from other industries, and highlights that the absence of data standards and interoperability has contributed to blockchain’s failure to deliver significant value in the geoenergy domain thus far.

7 A particle swarm approach for optimizing a multi-stage closed loop supply chain for the solar cell industry

In order to implement sustainable strategies in a supply chain, enterprises should provide highly fa vorable and effective solutions for reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which brings out the issues of designing and managing a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC). This paper studies an integrated CLSC net work design problem with cost and environmental concerns in the solar energy industry from sus tainability perspectives. A multi-objective closed-loop supply chain design (MCSCD) model has been proposed, in consideration of many practical characteristics including flow conservation at each pro duction/recycling unit of forward/reverse logistics (FL/RL), capacity expansion, and recycled components. A deterministic multi-objective mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model capturing the tradeoffs between the total cost and total CO2 emissions was developed to address the multistage CSLC design problem. Subsequently, a multi-objective PSO (MOPSO) algorithm with crowding distance-based non dominated sorting approach is developed to search the near-optimal solution of the MCSCD model. The computational study shows that the proposed MOPSO algorithm is suitable and effective for solving large-scale complicated CLSC structure than the conventional branch-and-bound optimization approach. Analysis results show that an enterprise needs to apply an adequate recycling strategy or energy saving technology to achieve a better economic effectiveness if the carbon emission regulation is applied. Consequently, the Pareto optimal solution obtained from MOPSO algorithm may give the superior sug gestions of CLSC design, such as factory location options, capacity expansion, technology selection, purchasing, and order fulfillment decisions in practice.

8 Applying a new human factor tool in the nuclear energy industry

Aim: Nuclear regulations demand that human contribution is included in the reporting and analysis of operational events (OE), but this topic is not actively studied. We studied current human factor (HF) pro cedures in nuclear OE reporting and analysis, and tested a new HF tool for OE analysis. Methods: We modified an HF tool for nuclear purposes. Safety experts (n = 8) from two nuclear power companies (NPC) tested the HF tool in a workshop investigating three OEs. We interviewed the safety experts and managers (n = 20) of the two NPCs, to evaluate the current HF practices and the output of the OE analysis with the new HF tool. We also analysed the documentation. Results: The study revealed that currently, the reporting and analysis of OE focuses mainly on technical and risk aspects, and HF is not very concrete. The new HF tool offered a more accurate picture of the anal ysed OEs and HFs affecting OEs including the successes, than current OE analysis methods. The users found the HF tool clear and easy to use, useful for investigation, training and self-evaluation, and for mon itoring safety trends. Discussion: NPCs are aware of the need and usefulness of HF thinking, but HFs in OE reporting and anal ysis still need to be concretized. Development needs include further modification and validation of the tool, and planning of future implementation at NPCs and in the nuclear industry. Conclusions: HF competence and implementation has to be improved, as stressed in the nuclear safety regulation.

9 A system dynamic analysis of Chinas oil supply chain: Over-capacity and energy security issues

Over-capacity problem in refining sector and energy security for oil supply are critical issues for China’s oil industry. As governmental intervention plays a significant part in current and future development of oil industry, over-capacity problem would not be solved without macro-regulatory. Though China is pro moting large-scale strategic reserve of crude oil, there is rare quantitative evaluation on the capability of the oil industry in dealing with import disruption. In this paper, a system dynamic model is established for oil supply chain analysis. Based on the model, a quantitative measurement is proposed to evaluate the over-capacity extent of refining industry. The over-capacity extent is classified into three levels, accord ing to varied demand fluctuation the supply chain is expected to deal with. By comparing the modeling results and historical data of 2012 and 2013, we conclude that over-capacity in China’s refining industry is in the severest level. The measurement reveals the driven-force of over-capacity from supply chain per spective, and demonstrates a quantitative method to figure out the proper capacity of energy supply industry. Second, the model simulates how oil supply chain responds to crude oil import disruption and the subsequent impacts. The modeling results indicate that the current configuration of China’s oil supply system is able to maintain sustainable supply under a less-than-180-day crude oil import disrup tion. The model provides a supply chain perspective in looking into energy security issues, and reveals the relationship between strategic petroleum reserve and the capability to cope with supply risks. In sum mary, the system dynamic model proposed in this paper is applicable for analysis on capacity planning and reserve strategy design of oil supply chain, providing valuable suggestion for the future development of China’s oil industry. The design concept and method of the model can be used for analysis of other energy industry.
