1 How does new environmental law affect public environmental protection activities in China? Evidence from structural equation model analysis on legal cognition

To investigate the validity of Chinese law enforcement from the publics perspective, this research applies the theory of planned behavior, and introduces law as a moderator variable to explore the determinants of publics environmental behaviors. Results from an empirical study of China indicate that perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, inward attitude, and outward attitude all have positive impacts on environmental intentions and indirectly affect the citizens environmental behavior and activists environmental behavior. Meanwhile, legal cognition positively moderates the relationship between environmental intentions and behaviors. As the level of the publics legal awareness increases, the direct effect of these two types of environmental intentions on environmental behaviors respectively continues to increase. Based on the findings, some constructive implications are provided to the governments and legislators to strengthen public participation in environmental protection.

2 Eco-labeling and sustainability: A case of textile industry in Pakistan

Industrial pollution is a big concern in many manufacturing sectors including textile sector. Recently, voluntary actions for environmental protection have gained their importance. Eco-labeling is one of the most important schemes of voluntary environmental actions and has been recognized as an effective measure to reduce industrial pollution. This paper analyzes the effect of eco-labels on the textile firms’ environmental and financial performance. Three stage least squares regression is applied using data from 128 firms listed in Pakistan Stock Exchange. Results reveal that eco-labels have a significant positive effect on textile firms’ environmental and financial performance. This indicates that eco-labels promote the sustainable growth of textile firms. Furthermore, financial performance, material cost, and age have a significant positive effect on the environmental performance of textile firms whereas machinery and size have a significant negative effect on the environmental performance. Likewise, debt-equity ratio and size of the firm have a significant positive effect on the financial performance of the textile firms wheras the environmental performance, machinery, and age of the firms have a significant negative effect on the financial performance

3 Activities related to human medicines in Romania: Legal environmental protection issues

Current environmental research focuses extensively on pharmaceutical waste, demonstrating the contamination caused by active pharmaceutical ingredients. Regulations and programs to evaluate, prevent, and reduce environmental risks linked to human medicines are currently being developed in various countries. We assessed the Romanian legislation to identify the potential areas of development of environmental protection policies in the pharmaceutical field. Laws and regulations of interest were selected, and their relevant provisions were analysed using methods of legal interpretation, then corelated with their equivalent in more developed countries. Romanian legislation requires an evaluation of the environmental impact of human medicines, an assessment of non-clinical research and pharmaceutical manufacturing projects, appropriate management of pharmaceutical waste and its disposal on a contract basis, and the collection and disposal of expired or unused medicines by pharmacies. In practice, however, a coherent system for pharmaceutical waste management is lacking because of many legal loopholes in environmental protection. Romanian legislation does not include specific rules regarding sound environmental practice for clinical research laboratories, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and wholesale distributors. The pharmaceutical industry has no legal responsibility to manage and dispose expired or unused medicines collected from the population. Equitable sharing of environmental responsibility by the pharmaceutical industry actors along with the involvement of public authorities should be established via legislation and regulation that reflect the requirements mandated by other more advanced countries. Additionally, continuous training programs should be provided for practitioners to reinforce their role in the rational use of medicines and professional campaigns should be created to raise public awareness about preventing environmental contamination.

5 Research on the application of block chain big data platform in the construction of new smart city for low carbon emission and green environment

The sharing of government information resources is significant for improving the level of governance and social information. However, due to the existence of cross-domain security and trust islands, government departments are hindering the sharing of government information resources with other organizations and the public. To this end, the blockchain technology is used to construct a decentralized distributed peer-to-peer trust service system, which is integrated with the existing PKI/CA security system to establish a new trust model that supports multi-CA coexistence. Based on this, the structural composition and functional data flow of the blockchain smart city information resource sharing and exchange model designed in this paper. This paper launched a study on the role of the smart big data platform, and selected the development of smart cities in Hefei as an empirical analysis. From the connotation of smart city, block chain and big data technology combined, and the positive effects of relevant information technology summarized on the construction of smart city big data platform. Based on this, the smart city development level evaluation model of TOPSIS method constructed. The evaluation model constructed to make a vertical comparison from 2012 to 2017, the scale of smart cities is growing at an average annual rate of more than 30%, saving 20% of urban resource allocation and becoming a new pillar industry. Therefore, Hefei City should further increase environmental supervision and promote the use of low-carbon environmental protection new energy. The improvement of government management level has a positive effect on the construction of smart Hefei

6 Background correction method for improving the automated detection of radioisotopes from airborne gamma-ray surveys

An altitude-based background correction strategy was developed for use in the application of pattern recognition methods to the classification of gamma-ray spectra collected during airborne surveys. Application of this methodology helped to suppress the background spectral variation that serves to obscure the photopeaks associated with low levels of gamma-ray emission. The correction method was implemented by optimizing a database of background gamma-ray spectra collected at various locations and altitudes. Given this background database, a field-collected spectrum was corrected by performing linear regression onto a background spectrum from the database at a matching altitude. The residuals about the regression fit were then digitally filtered and submitted to nonparametric linear discriminant analysis for the purpose of computing classification models for targeted radioisotopes. The resulting classifiers were applied to predict the presence or absence of specific radioisotope signatures in data acquired during airborne surveys. Employing data provided by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency Airborne Spectral Photometric Environmental Collection Technology (ASPECT) program, classification models were computed to detect the presence of cesium-137 (137Cs) and cobalt- 60 (60Co). The optimized classifiers were tested over 12 diverse locations, with nine of these data sets containing the target radioisotopes. Correct classification percentages of 99.4% and 99.8% were obtained for the 137Cs and 60Co classifiers, respectively, on the basis of comparisons to visual inspections of the corresponding spectra.

7 Problems of engineering entrepreneurship in Africa: A design optimization example in solar thermal engineering

This paper addresses Africa’s challenges and opportunities to engineering entrepreneurs. A business environmental scan is done in line with the standard PESTLE analysis, identifying at least twenty generic problems across the continent. Focus is directed to an opportunity in solar water heating, where inadequate electricity supply combines with a plentiful solar resource amidst environmental protection awareness, to make investments potentially worthwhile. Three home level market segments are identified. Key issues in the PESTLE scan are linked with available materials to formulate and solve a design optimization model for these segments. A competition-less product emerges for rural homes. Another – for small urban homes – can be retailed at 50% of current equivalent system prices, and yet, still make profits for the entrepreneur. Both these systems attain average temperatures in excess of 57 C, the fatal level for most pathogenic bacteria. The 3rd and larger system for rich urban homes incorporates a supplementary electric heater that is programmable to kick in half an hour before water withdrawal if solar energy has failed to maintain water temperature above 60 C. The entrepreneur can still make profit if the product retails at 52% of the equivalent competition price.

در بازیابی پلاستیک های پلی سولفون، صرفه جویی خوبی در انرژی و حفاظت از محیط زیست قابل توجهی دیده می شود. این مقاله با ویژگی های مکانیکی و ماندگاری و دوام بلند – مدت پلاستکی های دست نخورده و بازیابی شده پلی سولفون که از ضایعات غیربافتی پلاستیک های پلی سولفون جمع آوری شده اند ارتباط دارد، بررسی مکانیکی آزمایش کشش و آزمایش تاثیر ایزود برای بررسی تاثیر فرآوری چرخه ای روی عملکرد پلاستیک های پلی سولفون انجام می شوند. دوام بلند – مدت پلاستیک های دست نخورده و پلی سولفون برمبنای انطباق زمان – دما و با استفاده از یک تحلیل مکانیکی دینامیک (DMA) مطالعه می شود. پایداری حرارتی ازطریق انرژی فعالسازی پیرولیتیک محاسبه شده توسط روش سنتیکی تبدیلی ایزو و با استفاده از یک تحلیل حرارتی – گرانشی (TGA) بررسی می شود. نتایج نشان می دهند که پلاستیک های بازیابی شده پلی سولفون خواص کششی مشابه و درعین حال استحکام ضربه ای پایین تری را نسبت به پلاستیک های پلی سولفون دست نخورده نشان می دهند. دوام بلند – مدت و پایداری حرارتی پلاستیک های دست نخورده نسبت به پلاستیک های بازیابی شده بهتر است و با افزایش زمان فرآوری چرخه ای کاهش می یابد، که به ترکیب کردن ناخالصی ها و تجزیه ساختار مولکولی در فرآیند بازیابی نسبت داده می شود.

9 Fractal geometry analysis of chemical structure of natural starch modification as a green biopolymeric product

Public concerns and official pressures around environmental protection as well as exhausting petroleum resources have brought about preferences in studying and applying environmentalfriendly polymers instead of synthetic petroleum-based polymers. For this aim, biopolymers can have outstanding advantages in biodegradability by saving time, energy and effort spent on increasingly costs of polymeric wastes. Natural starch (being studied in this work), as one of the most abundant natural resources for polymer materials, is inexpensive and biodegradable. As starch necessarily needs for modifications and processing before being used as ideal green polymer material, it is vital to perform feature extraction and defect detection measures in structure by some method like image analysis. Fractal as a new geometry has circumstantially progressed recently in the fields of image processing, physical space–time, medical image analysis, electrochemical patterns, digital images, sounds etc. Box Count Fractal Dimension as a very important and popular part of fractal geometry can be a useful factor in feature extraction and pattern recognition. This paper presents a new method for defect detection in the structure of natural starch modification images using the fractal dimension (FD) along with mean and standard deviation of image color. This is performed via feature extraction based on artificial intelligence by MatLab R2013a for box counting algorithms. Otsu’s graythresh method by MatLab R2013a is applied to binarize the images. The results of proposed methodology are illustrated as log–log curves where the fractal dimensions are recognized by curve fitting (CF) tool with more than 95% accuracy. The outputs express that starch samples’ FD vary in the range from 1.636 to 1.926 among which the last is identified as non-defective polymer. Non-defective feature is of great importance for quality control measures and chemical reactivity being here highlighted as biodegradability

10 The role of institutional entrepreneurship in emerging energy communities: The town of St: Peter in Germany

This paper provides insights from the extant literature on institutional entrepreneurship in emerging fields which could enable us to understand how the innovative idea of ‘energy community’ arose, became new practices, and has been institutionalized over time. In August 2008, the people of St. Peter, a Black Forest rural town in Germany, decided to build their own energy co-operative for the operation of the biomass District Heating Plant (DHP). The key driving forces for this comprised a wide range of sustainability-related discourses, such as climate protection, energy supply security, and regional economic development. The biomass DHP, as an environmentally- friendly heating system, has become a taken-for-granted practice and has been presented as an ‘inspirational’ example to other communities in the region. The main contribution of this study is to develop and use a multi-level analytical framework to elucidate the process of legitimation and sense-making of the notion of the energy community St. Peter. The key conclusions are that institutional entrepreneurs are dispersed across space, social status, sector, and governance levels; their agency is distributed among multiple levels of action and multiple stages of development; and they use a range of social skills to justify their action for institutional change. Therefore, community-based initiatives should draw on multiple discourses that address both individual interests (stable prices and supply security) and collective concerns (environmental protection). In this way, wide public support for transforming existing energy practices into more renewable ones can be achieved.
