61 Three-month follow-up effects of a medication management program on nurses’ knowledge
This quasi-experimental study examined the effects of a medication management program on nurses knowledge of medication management, three months after program completion. Fifty-seven nurses took a multiple-choice test both immediately after the program and three months later. Changes in test performance were assessed using McNemar’s test and generalized estimating equations for binary outcomes. Test results were generally consistent from immediately post-program to three months later, though four items differed significantly. From immediately post-program to three months later, fewer nurses correctly answered the items: documenting no medication administration (98.2 vs 86.6, p = 0.04); documenting opioid administration (56.1 vs 33.3, p = 0.01); and observation after opioid administration (35.1 vs 19.3, p = 0.08. Significantly more nurses correctly answered the item concerning the pharmacology of medication administered with food (64.9 vs 77.2, p = 0.09). We recom- mend both continuous medication management training and focusing on the correspondence between theory- based knowledge and clinical practice routines.

62 Comparative educational outcomes of an active versus passive learning continuing professional development activity on self-management support for respiratory educators: A non-randomized controlled mixed-methods study
Aim: We compared educational outcomes associated with an active vs. passive continuing professional development activity on self-management support for respiratory educators. Background: There is a need to identify learning activities associated with the most successful continuing professional development programs for respiratory educators. Design: This was a non-randomized controlled mixed-methods study recruiting respiratory educators attending a continuing professional development activity on self-management support. Methods: In the experimental group, active learning methods (role-play simulations) were employed, whereas passive learning methods (lecture) were used in the comparison group. Educators were allocated to the comparison group (first 15 months of the study), then to the experimental group (last 17 months). Educators filled questionnaires measuring pre-/post-activity knowledge about self-management support (score 0–25) and selfreported competence (score 1–10). Scores were compared using mixed-effect models. Interviews with educators were conducted and content analysis was performed. Results: We recruited 94/94 educators (active: n = 51; passive: n = 43). Knowledge scores increased to a greater extent in the active vs. passive learning group (adjusted difference-in-difference [aDID]=2.01; 95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 0.14–3.88), although competence scores increased to a greater extent in the passive learning group (aDID=− 0.38; 95%CI: − 1.56 to − 0.04). Reflecting on their competence, educators of the active learning group identified the need to further improve their self-management support skills, whereas educators of the passive learning group did not. Conclusions: Our results show that an active learning continuing professional development activity on selfmanagement support could help educators to better apply knowledge and appears to engage them in a process of reflection on action.

63 Becoming a scholarly management practitioner – Entanglements between the worlds of practice and scholarship
Our contribution in this paper is to elucidate how doctoral education can enable professionals to develop through an experiential pedagogy that is based on a theoretical model of scholarly management practice. It will draw from our experience of designing and running a large online DBA with participants from across the world. We present a model of Scholarly Management Practice and explain how its use differentiates this approach to doctoral education from others in that there is a clear focus on how holders of the DBA enact their management practice, charac- terized by an orientation to problematization, inquiry, dialogue and critical reflection. We describe the design and underlying theoretical and philosophical rationale for how the program elements articulate together to stimulate the development of scholarly management practitioners. The implications for teaching and learning are presented in the form of a description and ratio- nale for the design of the program in its three stages. We illustrate the trajectory of potential development as a doctoral practitioner through the vignette of one student’s journey. We also reflect on the limitations and lessons learned of our own theorising and practice in the devel- opment and delivery of this DBA.

64 Translation, hegemony and accounting: A critical research framework with an illustration from the IFRS context
Translation research in accounting has in the past decades recognized the significance of trans- lation for international accounting communication, but only recently started to discuss the relevance and legitimacy of the approaches in which translation is used and studied. Generally, translation in accounting has been seen as a technically challenging task that serves an assumedly neutral functional purpose. This perception is problematic in that it neglects the multifaceted cultural, political and societal implications of translation. In order to expand the theoretical repertoire of translation research in accounting, this paper introduces a critical lens that questions the seemingly neutral use of translation in various contexts. Drawing on the influential work of translation theorist Lawrence Venuti, it is argued that translation both reveals and factors in intercultural hegemonies, imbalances and asymmetries. To explore the relevance of Venuti’s theorizing for accounting, the context of IFRS translation is examined. Attempting to become a global institution across cultures and languages, the IFRS indeed depend on translation in their diffusion. The IFRS context is, however, embedded in current linguistic and cultural hegemonies: the dominant position of the English language and the canonical role of Anglo-American ac- counting. Combining a critical theoretical conceptualization and empirical data from the trans- lation work of Finnish-language IFRS, this paper illustrates how translation in accounting is not a technical exercise but can entail linguistic and cultural conflicts between dominant and marginal (ized) concepts, traditions and values. Above all, this paper shows how applying a different theoretical lens to translation can yield critical insights.

65 ‘Going agile’: Exploring the use of project management tools in fostering psychological safety in group work within management discipline courses
While psychological safety is widely acknowledged to be a crucial factor in determining how well teams function, little attention has been paid to this phenomenon in management education and HE more broadly. This highlights an important gap, given the ‘thorny’ nature, and pervasive use, of group work. We contribute the first examination of an HE intervention to increase psycho- logical safety. Specifically, through a two-phase mixed methods approach (pre/post surveys and focus groups, student diaries), we examine the implementation of Agile project management principles in both an undergraduate and postgraduate digital marketing course (total n = 131). The findings illustrate that the intervention increased psychological safety along with team- performance, group learning, interpersonal communication and creativity, whilst also reducing the free-rider problem. The study provides three contributions. First, we extend knowledge of psychological safety by showing it can be fostered through interventions providing two core antecedents (supporting facilitation and a cohesive framework). Second, we build knowledge of psychological safety in education by evidencing a greater breadth of positive outcomes, which until now has been mostly limited to knowledge development. Third, we expand understanding of implementing group work interventions in management, providing five important considerations for educational practitioners.

66 Integrating corporate website information into qualitative assessment for benchmarking green supply chain management practices for the chemical industry
The China’s chemical industry has been endeavoring to promote sustainable development through practicing green supply chain management (GSCM). This paper proposes a multi-criteria decision framework with twenty practices to guide companies in the industry to enact GSCM effectively. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) has been used to cluster the proposed practices. We found five aspects, including economic initiatives, environmental management, eco-design, resource recycling, and stakeholder and employee, constitute the underlying structure of GSCM. A mixed decision tool combining the entropy weight method (EWM) and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been developed and applied to identify key factors. Official website information has been collected and used to analyse the website contents of five benchmarking companies in the China’s chemical industry. The results reveal that the aspects of environmental management, eco-design and resource recycling are the most important GSCM themes. Moreover, the top five practices are top management support, performing life cycle assessment, managing environmental risks, advancing recycling technologies and integrating reverse logistics. Conceptual and practical implications are discussed.

67 Framing accounting for goodwill: Intractable controversies between users and standard setters
How to account for goodwill arising from business combinations has proven to be one the most controversial topics for the standardisation, preparation, and audit of financial reports. Given its contested nature, and recent debates about improper goodwill accounting by failing companies, standard setters are currently reconsidering existing recognition, measurement, and disclosure requirements. In this study, we explore the views of a relatively neglected group of stakeholders in the financial reporting policy-making arena – financial statement users. We draw on empirical evidence from interviews with financial analysts and from responses by analysts to IASB and EFRAG consultations. We mobilise framing theory as used in public policy studies to analyse how users make sense of goodwill accounting information as compared to standard setters. Our key finding is the plurality of colliding frames between users and standard setters that remain intractable. Our analysis reveals that users’ interest in management’s accountability on acquisi- tions cannot fit easily into the financial reporting frame. Not only are claims by standard setters about the value relevance of goodwill impairments found not to be experienced in practice, but also we discover that users question the benefits of standard setters working in this area, while they take recourse to ‘street numbers’ for their analysis. We interpret the intractability we discover as putting into question public policy claims that accounting policies are developed with a commitment to serve the public interest.

68 Management of blood products: Nursing knowledge and practices at an academic hospital
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and practice of nurses at an academic hospital regarding the handling of red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets. Methods: A descriptive study was performed using a paper-based questionnaire. Nurses from 12 wards where these products are frequently transfused were purposefully selected to participate. Results: Ninety-nine questionnaires were analysed. While 78.9 % respondents reported that their knowledge regarding the handling of RBCs and platelets was adequate, 81.7 % still stated that they would like more training on this subject. Almost half (45.2 %) reported that the time of arrival of RBCs and platelets on the ward was not charted, while 25.5 % indicated that they warm all these blood products before transfusion. About eighty percent (80.8 %) did not know where to store platelets in the ward and 37.4 % knew the average duration of a platelet transfusion. The term, blood on returnable basis was correctly interpreted by 6.1 % of respondents. Conclusion: Gaps exist in the knowledge and practice of nursing staff regarding the correct handling of RBCs and platelets, specifically discarding, storage and warming of these products. Addressing such gaps would improve patient care and contribute towards patient blood management.

69 Intellectual engagements of accounting academics: The ‘forecasted losses intervention
This paper explores the social and political potential of accounting scholarship, presenting and discussing an intellectual intervention challenging a legislative reform that significantly affected Spanish industrial relations. In this reform, an accounting artifact (forecasted losses) played an unexpected role and was misrepresented, prompting a sizeable number of scholars to sign two manifestos in 2010 and 2012 against the use of forecasted losses made by the new legislation. As promoters of this manifesto, we perform in this paper a collaborative autoethnography to reflect on the context, events, reactions, and significance of this intervention for both the academic and the industrial relations fields. We mobilize Pierre Bourdieu’s ideas on the public intellectual to think more generally about academic engagements in the interplay between accounting, poli- cymaking, and social issues. This intervention illustrates the different manners in which admin- istrative and economic powers interfered in the Spanish accounting academic field, limiting the disposition of Spanish scholars to engage in public debates. We also interpret our engagement as mobilizing intellectual capital to expose how the notion of forecasted losses was used to produce a form of symbolic violence and how this capital is more effective as it produces messages addressed to the producers, i.e., policymakers and the judicature in this specific case.

70 Diagnosis and management of premature ovarian insufficiency
Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a complex clinical syndrome with life-changing physiological and psychological consequence in young women of reproductive age. However, the understanding of the etiology, diagnosis and optimal intervention strategies for this condition remains poorly understood. In recent years advances in epidemiologic and genetic research has improved our knowledge and awareness of POI. Further prospective randomised trials are required to improve the psychological and sexual health, fertility treatment options and long-term management of the impact on bone, cardiovascular and cognitive impact in women with POI. In this paper we aim to provide an overview on the diagnosis and management of POI, discuss the current understanding of the condition and future directions.
