Publish–Subscribe approaches for the IoT and the cloud: Functional and performance evaluation of open-source systems
2022 Publish–Subscribe systems facilitate the communication between services or applications. A
typical system comprises the publisher, the subscriber, and the broker but, may also feature
message queues, databases, clusters, or federations of brokers, apply message delivery policies,
communication protocols, security services, and a streaming API. Not all these features are
supported by all systems or, others may be optional. As a result, there is no common ground
for the comparison of Publish–Subscribe systems. This paper presents a critical survey and
taxonomy of Publish–Subscribe systems, of their design features and technologies. The concepts
of message queuing, publish–subscribe systems, and publish–subscribe protocols for the cloud
and the IoT are discussed and clarified. The respective evaluation is about seven state-of-the-art
open-source systems namely, Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, Orion-LD, Scorpio, Stellio, Pushpin, and
Faye. For the sake of fair comparison, a minimum set of common features is identified in all
systems. All systems are evaluated and compared in terms of functionality and performance
under real-case scenarios.

Neuronal transcriptomic responses to Japanese encephalitis virus infection with a special focus on chemokine CXCL11 and pattern recognition receptors RIG-1 and MDA5
MDA5-2019 Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) causes central nervous system neuronal injury and inflammation. A clear
understanding of neuronal responses to JEV infection remains elusive. Using the Affymetrix array to investigate
the transcriptome of infected SK-N-MC cells, 1316 and 2737 dysregulated genes (≥ 2/−2 fold change,
P < 0.05) were found at 48 hours post-infection (hpi) and 60 hpi, respectively. The genes were mainly involved
in anti-microbial responses, cell signalling, cellular function and maintenance, and cell death and survival.
Among the most highly upregulated genes (≥ 10 folds, P < 0.05) were chemokines CCL5, CXCL11, IL8 and
CXCL10. The upregulation and expression of CXCL11 were confirmed by qRT-PCR and immunofluorescence.
Pathogen recognition receptors retinoic acid-inducible gene-1 (RIG-1) and melanoma differentiation-associated
protein 5 (MDA5) were also upregulated. Our results strongly suggest that neuronal cells play a significant role
in immunity against JEV. CXCL11, RIG-1 and MDA5 and other cytokines may be important in neuropathogenesis. Keywords: Japanese encephalitis virus | Transcriptome | RNA microarray | Proinflammatory mediators | Neuronal infection | CXCL11 | RIG-1 | MDA5 |

Using educational data mining to assess students’ skills at designing and conducting experiments within a complex systems microworld
استفاده از داده کاوی آموزشی برای ارزیابی مهارت های آموزشی دانش آموزان در طراحی و آزمایشهای درون یک سیستم های پیچیده جهان میکرو-2015 Article history:Received 4 October 2014Received in revised form 25 April 2015 Accepted 30 April 2015Available online xxxKeywords: Complex systems Inquiry assessmentPerformance assessment Educational data mining 21st century skillsMany national policy documents underscore the importance of 21st century skills, includ- ing critical thinking. In parallel, recent American frameworks for K-12 science education call for the development of critical thinking skills in science, also referred to as science inquiry skills/practices. Assessment of these skills is necessary, as indicated in policy doc- uments; however, this has posed a great challenge for assessment researchers. Recently, some science learning environments seek to assess these science skills. These systems log all students’ interactions within the given system, and if fully leveraged, these logs pro- vide rich assessments of inquiry skills. Here, we describe our environment Inq-ITS (inquiry intelligent tutoring system), that uses educational data mining to assess science inquiry skills, as described as 21st century skills. Additionally, here, we describe how we measure students’ skills at designing controlled experiments, a lynchpin skill of inquiry, in the con- text of complex systems. In doing so, our work addresses 21st century skill assessment in two ways, namely of inquiry (designing and conducting experiments), and in the context of complex systems, a key topic area of 21st century skills. We use educational data mining to develop our assessment of this skill for complex systems.© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
