1 An integrated production-logistics-crop rotation planning model for sugar beet supply chains
This paper presents an integrated strategic-tactical planning model for the sugar beet supply chain problem. The model includes the critical agricultural and industrial decisions coupled with the transportation of crops by capacitated vehicles from farms to the processing facilities. In the agricultural stage, the proposed model is used to analyze both agronomic and operational constraints for achieving a sustainable farming system through feasible strategic crop rotation plans. These plans integrate crop sequences with temporal and spatial variations while considering the known seasonal demand. The agricultural decisions involve crops planting and harvesting decisions to fulfill both fresh produce crops and processing demands. In the industrial stage, the key decisions include aggregate production plans for processing the harvested beet, as well as managing the shipping and storage of these agro-materials in the production facility. In this paper, a binary integer programming model is formulated with the objective of minimizing the overall operational cost including transportation and inventory of processed and non-processed beets. A unique time dimension was added to the planning horizon to allow crop rotation planning between different cropping seasons. A realistic case is used to test the formulated model and elaborate its complexity.

2 Enhancing supply chain production-marketing planning with geometric multivariate demand function (a case study of textile industry)
In this paper, a multi-period, multi-product, multi-site, multi-sales channel aggregate production planning problem including ordering preferences is presented in an integrated two-echelon supply chain to avoid the suboptimality caused by separate, sequential decisions of production and the marketing/retailing chain. Each customer demand class is affected by price, marketing expenditures and product quality involving customer willingness-to-pay. In addition, the immigration of customers between submarkets (i.e. cannibalization) is considered in the market-segmented environment due to imperfect segmentation. This research develops a geometric programming model to formulate the issue of joint price differentiation and multi-site aggregate production planning decisions by maximizing the total profit of the supply chain. To tackle the model and obtain solutions, we tailor an efficient analytical solution procedure to convert the original highly non-linear programming model into a convex programming equivalent. Finally, a numerical study of garment supply chain is presented to demonstrate the performance of the model and solution approaches. The research findings indicate a positive relationship between the scaling constant of price-dependent demand and the total profit rate. Moreover, as price gaps grow, the utility of price differentiation is decreased.

3 Hierarchical aggregation of energy performance indicators in continuous production processes
The mitigation of the climate change requires a significant reduction of the fossil energy consumption in all industrial sectors. The implementation of formalized management systems supports the industry to continuously improve the energy performance which is measured using so called “Energy Performance Indicators”. One essential requirement for the evaluation is the correction of these indicators and the corresponding baselines by the influences of external static or dynamic factors, e.g. the ambient conditions, the product spectrum or the plant load. This is in particular difficult for large integrated production sites as e.g. in the chemical industry. In this contribution, an aggregation method is proposed to exploit the analysis of the factors on lower hierarchical layers for the evaluation of the performance of an aggregated domain. Thereby, the resulting aggregated indicator and the corresponding baseline consider all the identified factors from the lower layers, which facilitates the analysis and allocation of possible savings potentials. The concept is applied exemplarily to an integrated chemical production site and the contributions of each plant to the deviation of the energy performance of the site are analyzed. The method facilitates the verification of the improvement of the energy performance as required by ISO 50001:2018 and helps decision makers to prioritize investments in energy efficiency projects. The results can be used for discussions with policy-makers, certification bodies and other stakeholders on energy efficiency targets.

4 A fuzzy expert system for mitigation of risks and effective control of gas pressure reduction stations with a real application
Environmental changes and increased uncertainty due to technical damage, explosions and large fires have caused the risk of an inevitable element in the gas industry. This study purposes developing a new hybrid fuzzy expert system as a decision support system to mitigate the risk associated with gas transmission stations. The designed knowledge-based system combines the procedural and descriptive rules based on experts’ judgments to analyze the complex relationships between the different components of a gas pressure reduction station. The developed fuzzy expert system is coded in C language integrated production system (CLIPS) and is linked with MATLAB software for calling fuzzy functions. A real case study of gas pressure reduction stations in Iranian gas industry is conducted to validate the proposed expert system model. The expert system provides more than one thousand rules based on expert knowledge to prevent the pressure drop and the quality loss of gas or shutting off gas flow which accordingly increases gas flow stability. The proposed expert system could minimize the risk of hazardous scenarios, such as leakage and corrosion, in the gas industry and provide an acceptable precision in the provision of periodic control strategies and appropriate response under an emergency condition.

5 Supply chain network design with direct and indirect production costs: Hybrid gradient and local search based heuristics
Many works in the area of Supply Chain Network Design (SCND) have integrated production costs as one lumped cost. However, production costs embody indirect (overhead) and direct costs. This work brings a model that integrates these two production costs along with inventory and transportation costs. In particular, the work looks at the tradeoff between the shortening of the production duration (Pd) and the consequent increase in direct production costs. The work implicitly incorporates direct production costs that are the result of applying additional production resources to shorten Pd. Integrating both costs results in a nonlinear mathematical model. The overall objective function also includes binary variables to govern the selection of production plants resulting in a nonlinear mixed integer mathematical model. In this work, we prove the convexity of the objective function and we introduce a combination of a gradient and a local search heuristic to solve the resulting model. For practical implications, the paper presents four different scenarios to cover a wide range of supply chain settings. Principally, our results demonstrate promising benefits of reduced overall production costs, reduced production lead time, freed-up production capacity, and improved supply chain throughput.

6 Environmental sustainability of agri-food supply chains: An LCA comparison between two alternative forms of production and distribution of endive in northern Italy
Alternative cultivation practices such as organic and integrated farming are generally proposed as a mean to reduce environmental impacts associated with food production and consumption. For the same reason, various schemes of direct sale or distribution of local agricultural products have been increasingly developed as an alternative to large-scale distribution of nationally or globally sourced products. How ever, for a variety of vegetable crops such as salads and leaves, there is few scientific evidence about the relative environmental performance of alternative farming techniques. Similarly, alternative distribution systems have mainly been investigated only in terms of their energy and climate change performance, and mostly within the debate on domestic/local versus imported/delocalised food supply. In this paper, life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to compare the potential environmental impacts of two agricultural supply chains, with the primary aim of testing the expected benefits of vegetable organic farming and of alternative forms of distribution promoting packaging reduction and a shortened supply chain. Organic and integrated production of endive (Cichorium endivia) in Lombardia (northern Italy) were firstly compared, according to a cradle-to-farm gate approach. The comparison was then extended to the whole supply chain, considering the direct distribution of raw organic endive to local networks of ethical purchasing groups by means of returnable crates, and the large-scale retailing of conventional endive as a ready-to-use product after its industrial cutting, washing and packing. Fourteen environmental and human health impact categories were considered as terms of comparison, along with the cumulative energy demand. Results revealed that none of the examined farming techniques has a better overall environmental profile. In fact, when impacts are expressed per hectare of cultivated area, nearly half impact categories (7/15) are favourable to organic farming, with impact reductions ranging from 13% to 55%. However, organic fertilisation practices are responsible for higher impacts of this cultivation form in terms of acidification (þ16%), terrestrial eutrophication (þ32%) and non-carcinogenic human toxicity (þ127%). Per kg of harvested product, impact categories favourable to organic farming are reduced to five, while six are favourable to integrated farming (which achieves higher yields). Organic farming techniques thus need to be further improved in terms of fertilisation practices and achievable yields in order to achieve a more sustainable production system. Considering the whole supply chain, the direct distribution of the raw organic product loose at the local level is preferable for all impact categories except one, where the impact of the farming stage is dominant and against organic production. This exception however disappears if farming is excluded from the comparison (i.e. only distribution and consumption are considered). Observed reductions in overall supply chain impacts range mostly be tween 20% and 48% and are mainly enabled by the absence of disposable packaging items and industrial processing.

7 ISO 9001 implementation and associated manufacturing and marketing practices in the olive oil industry in southern Spain
This article examines 1) the factors that condition the implementation of Quality Management Systems (QMS) meeting the requirements of ISO 9001 in the olive oil industry of Andalusia, the world-leading olive oil producing region in southern Spain; and 2) whether the implementation of ISO 9001 is asso- ciated with the use of better manufacturing and marketing practices by these industries. The study is based on a survey of 101 olive oil enterprises. As conditioning factors, the managerial and supervisory staff of ISO 9001 enterprises tend to be younger and more dynamic, highly educated and more in touch with new, high-quality sources of information, more willing to take risks, less focused on economic profit, and more oriented to selling olive oil further and faster. Good manufacturing practices are, in general, widespread in the Andalusian olive oil industry. Regarding marketing practices, ISO 9001 in- dustries are more reliant on the use of ICTs and on the diversification of the type of olive oil sold. The policy implications of the work carried out are diverse if a wider implementation of ISO 9001 and better practices are the aim: fostering rejuvenation and formal education; training and information pro- grammes based on successful ISO 9001 enterprises; proving the economic viability of ISO 9001; improving access to credit; and developing innovative marketing strategies.© 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
