1 Micro-foundational dimensions of firm internationalisation as determinants of knowledge management strategy: A case for global strategic partnerships
Innovation is a critical source of competitive advantage in an increasingly changing and globalising environment, thus, knowledge management lies at the core of a firm’s global business strategy. This paper investigates the relationship between micro-foundational dimensions of firm internationalisation and its knowledge management strategy in the emerging economies, which have been found more efficient in converting technology into socio- economic impact. We specifically look at the technology acquisition modes which are operationalised into three categories: internal development, global strategic partnership, and outsourcing. Results from the analysis of World Bank data collected from manufacturing firms operating in emerging economies show that specific micro- foundational dimensions such as the share of foreign employees, level of foreign input and foreign sales have a significant impact on the choice of technology acquisition mode by a firm; whereas the level of foreign ownership does not have such an effect.

2 DOES TRIPLE HELIX COLLABORATION MATTER FOR THE EARLY INTERNATIONALISATION OF TECHNOLOGY-BASED FIRMS IN EMERGING ECONOMIES?
Firms’ early internationalisation (EI) is a complex process derived from uncertain market conditions, entrepre- neurial vision, and strategic entry decisions. Academic debates still require deepening and broadening the dis- cussion on early internationalisation of new technology-based firms (NTBFs). This study proposes a framework to analyse how NTBFs are adopting collaborative networks with the triple helix actors (government, university, and industry) to implement an EI strategy in emerging economies. Our findings show that the lack of specialised knowledge and resources stimulates collaboration with multiple triple helix agents to ensure the early entry strategy into international markets. We state the relevant implications and propositions concerning the inter- nationalisation of NTBFs and the relationship with triple helix stakeholders.SPECIAL DEDICATIONIn memory of Juan Arriaga, Department of Innovation and Entrepre- neurship, EGADE Business School

3 Evolution of Central and Eastern Europe related international business research
This study reviews the presence of articles related to Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in Web of Science (WOS). Bibliometric analysis first reveals the trends of CEE-related articles in the areas of international business (IB), management and economics up to 2016. The results show steady growth in absolute and relative numbers after 1990, intensifying since 2010. Second, we conduct topic research using network analysis with blockmodeling. We identify a network of topics and their interrelations over time and used them to periodise the CEE-related research in IB. The most-cited CEE-related IB articles and the main citation path are also presented. The analysis adds to the discussion of how the CEE region is explored in IB research, its contributions, impacts and the challenges facing regional research in the future. In this study, a methodology and framework for performing a comprehensive bibliometric analysis on regional IB research is applied.

4 Entrepreneurial marketing decision-making in rapidly internationalising and de-internationalising start-up firms
This study utilises an effectuation lens to contribute to knowledge involving the entrepreneurial marketing practices of rapidly internationalising firms, following a temporary discontinuation of overseas sales. This is important since earlier studies typically focus on continuing overseas activities, not de-internationalisation. Semi-structured interviews took place with owner-managers of sixteen small, UK based, knowledge-intensive start-ups, before planned re-internationalisation occurred. All management teams were proactive, took risks, exploited innovation and engaged in opportunity-driven plus resource leveraging behaviour. Conversely, creating adequate ‘customer value’ did not occur. The investigation highlights that in particular contexts, certain facets of an effectuation approach outweigh others and the notion of ‘affordable losses’ is viewed in both financial and non-financial terms. The study offers unique insights into the need for decision-makers in rapidly internationalising firms to undertake validation of strategies to discover new customers; also, the potential usefulness to lose particular customers, even temporarily, to facilitate enduring entrepreneurial marketing activities.

5 Industrial business associations improving the internationalization of SMEs with digital platforms: A design science research approach
This paper aims to contribute to the lack of design knowledge on digital platforms (DPs), by studying the new and specific context of DPs managed by industrial business associations (IBAs) to improve the internationalisation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). A specific objective is to elicit detailed digital plat- form’s requirements and features for this particular organisational context. A design science research (DSR) approach is adopted to develop design propositions (the artifact), following the context-intervention-me-chanism-outcome logic (CIMO-logic). The design propositions are derived for DPs that can support different types of generative mechanisms of social interaction: information sharing, collaboration, and collective action. The design propositions are obtained by balancing empirical knowledge based on interviews performed with IBAs and SMEs in Portugal and in the UK, with theoretical knowledge from the literature of information systems, DPs and collaborative networks (CNs). The utility of the design propositions is further evaluated by experts and IBAs. The findings are proved to be relevant for practice, mainly for IBAs, SMEs, and digital platform designers to develop more effective collaborative DPs and sociotechnical systems, supporting CNs and the internationalisation needs of SMEs. The knowledge generated in this study brings new design knowledge on DPs, contributing with design propositions translated into tangible and concrete requirements and capabilities, situated in a specific context and empirical setting.

6 An institution-based view of international entrepreneurship: A comparison of context-based and universal determinants in developing and economically advanced countries
The objective of this paper is to investigate the institutional characteristics of different geographic contexts that affect the internationalisation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The study focuses on three categories of factors: (a) sociocultural, (b) political/legal, and (c) economic. Under economic factors, it examines competitive pressures in international markets, the nature of demands in international markets, domestic resources advantages, and domestic general economic characteristics. The paper identifies universal factors that influence the internationalisation of SMEs regardless of the location of the firm. These universal factors are distinguished from context-based factors, which are specific to the particular conditions of the people/location of the firm. A comparative analysis of cases from Italy and Iran allow us to find factors that are universal, others that are Iranian context-based, and one factor specific to the Italian context. Also, our analysis suggests the existence of some factors without significant influence in either country.

7 Reverse knowledge acquisition in emerging market MNEs: The experiences of Huawei and ZTE
Based on case studies of leading Chinese MNEs international operations in developed countries, this study develops a reverse knowledge acquisition model of emerging market MNEs through subsidiary-led reverse learning, knowledge sharing and integration processes. It unpacks MNEs external learning process and con tributes to the literature by exploring three mechanisms of learning, sharing and integration. It finds three reverse learning channels, a multi-level hub-spoke type of knowledge acquiring mechanism, and a two-tier three step integration mechanism. The learning mechanism confirms knowledge acquisition driven by reverse learning behaviours; the sharing mechanism enriches the community perspective of capability building and sharing; the integration mechanism provides an effective way of knowledge integration within the MNEs.

8 Integrating embeddedness with dynamic capabilities in the internationalisation of fashion retailers
The paper presents an integration of the theoretical approaches of embeddedness and dynamic capabilities. Based on in-depth interviews with key informants of international fashion retail companies we show that dy namic capabilities enhance different types of embeddedness at different levels. Generic dynamic capabilities of adaptability and knowledge management play a role as they affect retailer-specific capabilities and societal, network and territorial forms of embeddedness. Integrating the two theoretical approaches provides new and deeper understanding of the nature of retail internationalization.

9 An exploratory study of international opportunity identification among family firms
This research examines how family firms identify international opportunities. Family firms are characterised by long-term orientation, being risk averse, and benefiting from familiness capital, resources and capabilities related to family involvement and interactions. Built upon opportunity identification theory and in two perspectives of accidental discovery and purposeful search, we explore the role of social and business networks, and prior knowledge in a first and subsequent international opportunity identification by family firms. In addition, we attempt to understand the role of family characteristics in the process of opportunity identification. Multiple case studies were carried out with seven family businesses from emerging economies, namely, India, Turkey and Taiwan. The findings of this research illustrate that because of being risk averse and long-term oriented, family firms are more likely to identify the first international opportunity through accidental discovery and subsequent international opportunities through purposeful search. The findings of this research show that, as risk- averse firms, family firms are not proactive in initiating international opportunity identification but rather learn about opportunities through accidental discovery. After the first experience of internationalisation, family firms engage in a more purposeful search to identify avenues that will aid their longevity through internationalisation. In the identification of firms’ first international opportunities, it is mainly social networks that play a crucial role, especially those that contain international industry and market-specific knowledge. There is also a positive relationship between a family entrepreneur’s prior knowledge and international opportunity identification and this relationship is moderated by the prior knowledge of their network. Familiness capital of these organisations can also play a role in long-term international opportunity identification.© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

10 The contribution of internalisation theory to international business: New realities and unanswered questions
This paper sets out the importance of internalisation theory to international business research and practice. It examines the context against which the theory has been developed, the environmental conditions in which the multinational enterprise has evolved and the phenomena that the theory has explained. It also examines the challenge to the theory of ‘‘unanswered questions’’. These include governance, location theory, dynamics, networked multinationals, innovation, entrepreneurship and the role of risk and uncertainty.© 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
