1 R&D internationalization in medium-sized firms: The moderating role of knowledge management in enhancing innovation performances
The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between SMEs’ R&D internationalization and their innovation outcomes. Most studies on the topic focused on large multinational companies (MNCs), leaving several gaps in the literature with regard to SMEs. Using data from 106 Italian SMEs we performed an OLS regression analysis to test and find evidence of a positive linear relationship between SME’s R&D internationalization and innovation performance. In addition, we found that this relationship is positively moderated by knowledge management (KM) orientation. Main contributions are directed to the empirical test of the aforementioned relationships in a specific under developed research area, i.e. non-high tech SMEs, thus highlighting the positive effect of foreign acquisition of diverse cross-cultural knowledge on innovation. Moreover, KM orientation has been found to amplify this effect in the context of SMEs, due to a better management and integration of key internal and external knowledge.

2 Enterprise social network for knowledge sharing in MNCs: Examining the role of knowledge contributors and knowledge seekers for cross-country collaboration
Online social networking within a large enterprise, known as enterprise social networking (ESN), is a critical requirement for social relationships and business-related informal discussions among its employees. ESN is important for multinational companies (MNCs) where employees work in different time zones in geographically dispersed locations in multiple continents. The MNCs use the ESN for their knowledge management and transfer activities among different subsidiaries in different countries or continents as a part of their strategic internationalization initiatives. ESN is developed by MNCs using enterprise social software for business or commercial knowledge management purposes and cross-country collaborations among their subsidiaries. ESN helps cross-country collaboration in MNCs to organize their internal communication (across different countries) and business discussions in an international environment. ESN is used mainly by two groups of employees in the MNCs: knowledge contributors and knowledge seekers. Both groups are essential for overall knowledge management strategy for creation, dissemination, and con- sumption of knowledge across countries. In this context, the purpose of this study is to examine the role of knowledge contributors and knowledge seekers in the MNCs using ESN for cross- country collaboration.

3 Industrial business associations improving the internationalization of SMEs with digital platforms: A design science research approach
This paper aims to contribute to the lack of design knowledge on digital platforms (DPs), by studying the new and specific context of DPs managed by industrial business associations (IBAs) to improve the internationalisation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). A specific objective is to elicit detailed digital plat- form’s requirements and features for this particular organisational context. A design science research (DSR) approach is adopted to develop design propositions (the artifact), following the context-intervention-me-chanism-outcome logic (CIMO-logic). The design propositions are derived for DPs that can support different types of generative mechanisms of social interaction: information sharing, collaboration, and collective action. The design propositions are obtained by balancing empirical knowledge based on interviews performed with IBAs and SMEs in Portugal and in the UK, with theoretical knowledge from the literature of information systems, DPs and collaborative networks (CNs). The utility of the design propositions is further evaluated by experts and IBAs. The findings are proved to be relevant for practice, mainly for IBAs, SMEs, and digital platform designers to develop more effective collaborative DPs and sociotechnical systems, supporting CNs and the internationalisation needs of SMEs. The knowledge generated in this study brings new design knowledge on DPs, contributing with design propositions translated into tangible and concrete requirements and capabilities, situated in a specific context and empirical setting.

4 The CAGE around cyberspace? How digital innovations internationalize in a virtual world
This paper analyzes some salient factors affecting the internationalization speed of digital innovations by tracking international penetrations of 127 apps at Apples app store. Although apps are globally available via online platforms, their international penetration is still subject to cultural, administrative, geographic, and economic (CAGE) distances that act as user adoption barriers to impede app internationalization. App developers may overcome these barriers by employing the demand-side strategies of engaging users in value co-creation. We contribute to an improved understanding of internationalization process in a digital context and also extend demand-side perspective to inform international entrepreneurship research.

5 Founder passion, neural engagement and informal investor interest in startup pitches: An fMRI study
Theory suggests that an earlier age at international entry results in improved growth but also decreased survival chances. Empirical studies tell a different story, providing mixed and equivocal results that challenge the tenets of extant theory. To begin to bridge the gap between theory and results, we develop theoretical explanations for curvilinear (inverted U-shaped) relationships between age at entry and both firm growth and firm survival as well as the moderating impact of resource-providing initial public offering (IPO) on the resource-intensive internationalization process. Our findings support the inverted U-shaped relationships and that IPO performance steepens the growth curve and flattens the survival curve. Taken together, our study enhances understanding of the effects of age at entry, bridges the IPO and international entrepreneurship literatures, and offers avenues for extending the micro-foundations of the development of capabilities for new foreign market entry. In doing so, we advance knowledge about the conditions under which earlier or later internationalization leads some firms to thrive while others fail.

7 Piecing together a puzzle—A review and research agenda on internationalization and the promise of exaptation
The development of wings on dinosaurs is an example of a discontinuous developmental shift, an exaptation. This complements adaptive behaviour, and both are Darwinian concepts used in organizational behaviour theories. Organizational behaviour also forms the basis of internationalization theories, and exaptation has been suggested to provide a theoretical tool for understanding disruptive development in internationalization. Together with adaptation, the concept illustrates a joint framework for understanding both disruptive and non-disruptive development in internationalization. However, a systematic assessment of the theory’s potential is missing. This manuscript builds on the TCCM review protocol, illustrating the commonalities between research agendas in the internationalization process, and provides a starting point for subsequent theory development utilizing exaptation in predicting internationalization. Thus, the review contributes to the field of international business by offering a conceptual framework to combine internationalization theories by including non-linear, discontinuous and novel events more tightly to the existing foundations of internationalization.

8 The research frontier on internationalization of social enterprises
Social enterprises (SEs) are hybrid organizations that simultaneously pursue financial and social goals, while addressing institutional voids. Despite the extensive cross-border activities of SEs, the state of research ad- dressing such flows of funds, technology and personnel is undeveloped. In this introductory article, we discuss the unique aspects of SEs and explore how the international business literature can inform our understanding of their internationalization. We outline promising areas for future research related to the drivers of and the processes underlying SE internationalization as well as its consequences. With this as a background, we introduce the five articles in this Special Issue.

9 What explains the degree of internationalization of early-stage entrepreneurial firms? A multilevel study on the joint effects of entrepreneurial self-efficacy, opportunity-motivated entrepreneurship, and home-country institutions
Integrating recent theories of entrepreneurship with new institutional economics, we develop a multilevel model to deepen our knowledge of how micro-level entrepreneurs’ personality and motivational antecedents interact with macro-level home-country institutions in determining internationalization by early-stage entrepreneurial firms. Data were collected from Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Adult Population Survey, GEM National Expert Survey, and the World Economic Outlook Database for the year of 2014. The results show that the personality trait of entrepreneurial self-efficacy contributes positively to the degree of internationalization via mobilizing opportunity-motivated entrepreneurship and that home-country formal institutions strengthen the above re- lationship of such young entrepreneurial firms.

10 The multinationality and performance relationship: Revisiting the literature and exploring the implications
The relationship between the degree of multinationality (M) and performance (P) of multinational enterprises (MNEs) is a central research question in the literatures of international business, management, strategy, and finance in the past 50 years. However, theoretical foundations and empirical findings are far from being in unison. Thus, it is necessary to conduct a critical review. We offer new insights by combining international business, accounting and finance perspectives in our review. We examine 160 articles in 43 scholarly journals and classic books published during the period 1960-2017. We use an inductive approach and a qualitative content analysis methodology. We review the extant literature and identify eight key inconsistencies, which may cause ambiguity in the findings. These include the deficiency of direct evidence to substantiate the arguments of benefits and costs of internationalization on performance, inherent limitations in the conceptualization and measurements of M, P, intangible assets, geographic research contexts and methodologies. We make eight re- commendations for future research to address these inconsistencies.
