1 Multi-objective optimization modelling of sustainable green supply chain in inventory and production management
The ever increasing pressure to conserve the environment from global warming cannot be overemphasized. Emission from the inventory and production process contributes immensely to global warming and hence, the need to device a sustainable green inventory by the operational managers. In this paper, a multi-item multi-objective inventory model with back-ordered quantity incorporating green investment in order to save the environment is proposed. The model is formulated as a multi-objective fractional programming problem with four objectives: maximizing profit ratio to total back-ordered quantity, minimizing the holding cost in the system, minimizing total waste produced by the inventory system per cycle and minimizing the total penalty cost due to green investment. The constraints are included with budget limitation, space restrictions, a constraint on cost of ordering each item, environmental waste disposal restriction, cost of pollution control, electricity consumption cost during production and cost of greenhouse gas emission in the production process. The model effectiveness is illustrated numerically, and the solution obtained to give a useful suggestion to the decision-markers in the manufacturing sectors.

2 A resilient hybrid payment supply chain inventory model for post Covid-19 recovery
The present Covid-19 pandemic causes disruptions to markets and businesses in general, affecting the supply chain inventory system most significantly. This work investigates a hybrid payment inventory model considering inflation, cash discount, price-sensitive demand, and preservation technology investment for non-instantaneous deteriorating products. Due to the economic downturn, a hybrid payment scheme composed of multiple pre- payments and a delay in payment is proposed to facilitate post Covid-19 recovery. The proposed model is one of the first models to consider a hybrid payment scheme in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, and to provide guidelines to retailers in planning the selling price, replenishment period, and preservation investment in view of the pandemic situation. The hybrid payment policy is suggested during the financial crisis to sustain orders from a retailer to the supplier and from the consumers to the retailer. During the supply disruptions, two cases for shortages and without shortages are studied. The nonlinear model is solved by Lingo 17 software. This study shows the effect of advance and delayed payments on the retailer’s total profit. It also shows that the total profit is extremely delicate to the inflation rate. The numerical examples illustrate the inventory model for different scenarios. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to provide managerial insights to management during post Covid-19 recovery.

3 Reduction of waste and carbon emission through the selection of items with cross-price elasticity of demand to form a sustainable supply chain with preservation technology
Carbon emission plays a vital role in global warming. In addition to this, wastages due to the deterioration have a hazardous impact on the ecosystem. The responsible managers’ primary concern is to form a sustainable supply chain. Further, supply chain managers select some appropriate combinations when dealing with items that possess cross-price elasticity of demand to make a profitable system. The present model aims to make a sustainable supply chain to reduce waste by obtaining the optimal values of production rate, batch size, several shipments, and preservation investment such that the total profit of the system is maximum. In the present study, a supply chain model with two manufacturers and one common retailer is developed. The proposed supply chain deals with products having negative or positive cross-price elasticity of demand. The carbon emission is also considered, which is associated with different operational activities of inventory such as preparation of setup of manufacturers, transportation of products, waste management, and holding stock at manufacturers and the retailer’s end. The objective function in the present study is a mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problem. A solution method- ology based on differential calculus is adopted. The result shows that products of low negative or high positive cross-price elasticity are a profitable combination. Additionally, a 20% reduction in wastage quantity is observed due to the investment in preservation technology. This result indicates that preservation technology positively impacts the environment and the finance associated with the inventory system. The proposed integrated system’s sustainability is illustrated with numerical examples, sensitivity analysis, and pictorial representation. In addition to this, several valuable managerial insights based on the study are provided.© 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

4 Identifying inventory project management conflicts: Results of an empirical study
Although conflicts are being studied in many different management fields there seems to be a rather restricted number of studies on inventory management-related conflicts and it is for this reason why we conducted a study on exploring the different types of conflicts, their causes and the emerging character of conflicts during the shaping, implementation and usage of inventory systems. In doing so, a framework for assessing different types of conflicts is taken as a starting point. From our case studies, it can be concluded that each of the archetypical conflicts addressed in our framework manifested itself in the companies studied. Our exploratory case studies strongly indicates that during the process of redesigning and implementing improvements inventory management conflicts can evolve in time. Furthermore, in almost all companies studied, the identified conflicts had a multidimensional character and were a mix of the archetypes addressed in our theoretical framework. For project managers it seems to be important to be aware of the different potential conflicts that might arise during the course of inventory projects. The results presented in this article may therefore help project managers to guide projects in the area of inventory management more effectively.

5 Optimizing a production-inventory system under a cost target
Achieving cost targets is a major concern for business managers. In this paper, we consider two risk man- agement criteria for a production-inventory system under a cost target: Probability of Loss and Expected Loss. We study two models with stochastic demand and production: The unit stockout cost model and the backlogging cost rate model. We analyze a limited-information setting that is an excellent approxi- mation to a full-information setting. We discover that the optimal inventory decisions for minimizing probability of loss are identical for both models, and that the optimal inventory decisions for minimizing expected loss share a similar structure for both models. In addition, we investigate inventory decisions when minimizing the expected cost subject to a probability of loss constraint. Extension to a generally-distributed unit production time is also explored. We provide comparative statics and manage- rial insights of value to loss-aware managers.© 2020 Elsevier Ltd. 6 Reinforcement learning for combined production-maintenance and quality control of a manufacturing system with deterioration failures
This paper describes and examines thoroughly a stochastic production/inventory system that produces a single type of products. During the production process, the system is affected by several deterioration failures. It is restored to its initial and previous deterioration state by repair and maintenance activities. Both maintenance and repair duration are assumed as exponential random variables. Moreover, the quality of the manufactured products is assumed to be affected by the current deterioration level of the system. The aim of this paper is to find the optimal trade-off between conflicting performance metrics for the optimization of the total expected profit of the system. To tackle such optimization problems, researchers frequently employ Dynamic Programming. This method, though, is not appropriate for the addressed problem due to complexity reasons. To this end, a Reinforcement Learning-based approach is proposed in order to obtain the optimal joint production, maintenance and product quality control policies. To the authors’ knowledge, the proposed approach is novel and there are few examples of such implementation in the academic literature.

7 Coordinating manufacturers innovation and retailers promotion and replenishment using a compensation-based wholesale price contract
In this paper, coordination of a manufacturer-retailer chain is investigated where the manufacturer innovates in manufacturing process and the retailer applies promotional efforts. The market demand is assumed to be stochastic dependent on the retailers promotional and the manufacturers innovation efforts. The retailer uses a periodic review inventory system for replenishing items and decides on order-up-to level, review period and promotional efforts level. On the other hand, it is possible for the manufacturer to boost the market demand by innovation in manufacturing process. The retailers promotional and manufacturers innovation efforts not only affect their profits, but also impress their mutual profits and the supply chain performance in an indirect manner. Firstly, we develop the decentralized and centralized decision-making models along with solution procedures and concavity analysis to solve the models. Although the centralized model improves the profitability of the whole supply chain, it may reduce the profitability of either the retailer or the manufacturer. Therefore, we propose a new compensation-based wholesale price contract for encouraging actors to take part in the joint decision-making scheme. Moreover, a profit sharing strategy based on the bargaining power of members is proposed for distributing the surplus profit between members. Finally, the results of the decentralized, centralized and coordination models are compared using test problems and some sensitivity analyses are presented.

8 Economic and social collaborative decision-making on visit interval and service level in a two-echelon pharmaceutical supply chain
In this paper, simultaneous coordination of visit interval and service level in a two-echelon pharma ceutical supply chain (PSC) with stochastic demand is studied. In the investigated model, a single pharmaceutical supplier (pharma-supplier) visits a single pharma-retailer at constant intervals and subsequently delivers the order after a deterministic lead-time. The pharma-retailer employs a periodic review inventory system and decides on the PSC service level, which impacts on the pharma-suppliers profitability. On the other hand, the pharma-supplier has full authority over the visit interval which determines order delivery frequency and consequently impacts on the pharma-retailers inventory costs. Firstly, both members decisions under decentralized and centralized decision-making structures are investigated, and afterward collaboration models are proposed in two different scenarios: (1) economic collaborative decision-making and (2) social collaborative decision-making. Finally, a set of numerical examples is carried out to compare the performance of different decision-making structures. The results indicate that collaborative decision-making on visit interval and service level could be of great benefit, both socially and economically.
