2 Joint analysis of the non-linear debt-growth nexus and capital account liberalization: New evidence from sub-Saharan region
This paper conducts an empirical investigation of the debt-growth nexus at firm level. We exploit a panel of sub-Saharan firms observed over the period 2004–2014 to jointly assess the impact of debt and financial liberalization on firm growth measured in terms of sales. Using a system GMM estimator, we find an inverted U-shaped relationship between debt and firm growth. However, the form of this relationship was reversed (U-shaped) by examining the joint effect of debt and capital account liberalization. This change results from the adoption of the policy of financial liberalization put in place by the regulatory authorities of the sub-Saharan countries. In addition, our results show that investment impact firm growth. Consequently, agency and trade-off theories are admitted. These findings may yield important policy implications. Policy makers must optimize financial decisions and adopt a gradual financial liberalization policy, thus ensuring the survival of sub-Saharan firms.

3 Trade reforms and current account imbalances
Several methods quantify soil evaporation by measuring vertical moisture flux or by recording change in mass of a soil specimen. These methods conventionally consider a non-deformable soil behaviour. However, shrinkage is the mechanical consequence of a plastic soil to evaporation reducing the area over which evaporation can occur. For this reason, it is imperative to take into account the gradual densification of the soil sample during evaporation in order to minimize possible measurement errors originating from the way, how the physical conditions are simulated. To address this challenge, an improved method proposed in this paper takes into account two aspects of soil deformation, which together have an influence on the total evaporation: (1) the reduced top soil surface due to radial shrinkage and (2) additional evaporation from the exposed side soil surface when the sample detaches from the sample holder. Four experiments with kaolin have been conducted in the laboratory to explore the effect of these two aspects through the proposed methodology. In the tests conducted, considering the changes in the area of the top soil surface and avoiding the additional evaporation from the exposed side surface significantly improved the accuracy of evaporation quantification by 25%.

4 Credit expansion, bank liberalization, and structural change in bank asset accounts
This paper studies the links among credit supply expansion, commercial bank asset ac- count structures, and the housing boom preceding the 20 07–20 09 financial crisis. We propose a real business cycle model with a housing market and financial intermediaries (banks) subject to leverage constraints. In our model, banks channel funds to firms for production and provide collateralized loans to mortgage borrowers; thus, banks determine their asset account structures endogenously. We show that a credit supply expansion to banks can account for four key facts that characterize the housing boom: (1) an increase in real house prices; (2) an increase in the mortgage-to-GDP ratio; (3) a decrease in the real mortgage interest rate; and (4) an increase in the ratio of mortgages to firm loans in commercial bank asset accounts. In our model, a credit supply expansion to banks can also generate a boom-bust cycle through the collateral value channel via mortgage borrowers. Asset-side bank regulations that reduce excessive mortgage issuance during a credit boom can help to dampen the subsequent economic downturn.

5 Capital account liberalization and the composition of bank liabilities
Using a sample of almost 600 banks in Latin America, we show that capital account liberalization lowers the share of equity and raises the share of interbank funding in total liabilities of the banking system. These shifts are mostly due to large banks; smaller banks, instead, increase their resort to retail funding by offering higher average deposit interest rates than larger banks. We also find significant differences in the behavior of banks with seemingly greater information opacity. These findings have positive implications for macro-prudential regulation.

6 Optimal capital account liberalization in China
China has maintained tight controls over its capital account. Domestic households are restricted from investing abroad and foreign investors are restricted from accessing Chinese financial markets. 7 Finance, law and poverty: Evidence from India
Using state-level data from India over the period 1983–2005, this paper shows a strong negative relationship between financial depth (as measured by credit volume) and rural poverty. Instrumental variable regressions suggest that this relationship is robust to endogeneity biases. Furthermore, financial deepening has a bigger impact on rural poverty alleviation than outreach (as measured by branch penetration). We find suggestive evidence that financial deepening reduced poverty rates especially among self-employed in the rural areas and also supported an inter-state migration trend from rural areas into the tertiary sector in urban areas, consistent with financial deepening being driven by credit to the tertiary sector. Our findings suggest that financial deepening contributed to poverty alleviation in rural areas by fostering entrepreneurship and inducing geographic-sectoral migration.

8 Decriminalization of abortion : A human rights imperative
This chapter reviews the evolving consensus in international human rights law, first supporting the liberalization of criminal abortion laws to improve access to care and now supporting their repeal or decriminalization as a human rights imperative to protect the health, equality, and dignity of people. This consensus is based on human rights standards or the authoritative interpretations of U.N. and regional human rights treaties in general comments and recommendations, individual communications and inquiry reports of treaty monitoring bodies, and in the thematic reports of special rapporteurs and working groups of the U.N. and regional human rights systems. This chapter explores the reach and influence of human rights standards, especially how high courts in many countries reference these standards to hold governments accountable for the reform and repeal of criminal abortion laws.

10 Do financial reforms promote entrepreneurship?
This paper investigates whether financial reforms promote entrepreneurship. Using a panel of 41 developed and developing countries from around the world, we find that financial sector reforms are positively associated with early-stage entrepreneurial activity. In a variety of robustness checks, including a falsification test, we fail to find the evidence that this relationship is driven due to the omission of unobserved, country-specific factors. Investigating the relationship be- tween reforms in different dimensions of the financial sector and entrepreneurship, we find re- forms in directed credit, credit controls, banking supervision, and international capital flows dimensions to be significantly associated with early-stage entrepreneurial activity.
