The adoption of digital technologies in supply chains: Drivers, process and impact

Digital technologies have been extensively studied in academic research and industry. However, little is known about the adoption of digital technologies in manufacturing firms at a supply chain level. This paper aims to understand why and how manufacturing firms adopt digital technologies, and the impact of the adoption on supply chains. The study uses literature review method, identifies the main drivers of manufacturing firms adopting digital technologies (why), develops a new model of the adoption process (how), and synthesizes the impact of the adoption on supply chains into four aspects (what): supply chain efficiency, supply chain structure, sustainability and innovation. The paper then proposes a conceptual framework consisting of driver, process and impact, and discusses their inter-relationships. The study identifies that the technological intelligence and supply chain cooperation are two important factors and proposes a two-dimentional levels of adopting digital technologies according to their low-to-high degrees. The proposed framework, in particular the levels of digital technology adoption, are novel to the existing literature. Each of the three parts of the framework and their inter- relationships lays a foundation for further empirical studies in this field. This study also provides guidance for practitioners adopting digital technologies for supply chain management and developing appropriate business strategies at different digitalization levels.

Analysis of barriers of sustainable supply chain management in electronics industry: An interpretive structural modelling approach

In the past, industries were concentrating only on the economic aspects of a business. Many organizations are now addressing the social and environment impact of their supply chain for which they are adopting sustainability in their supply chain. The process of transformation to a sustainable supply chain will encounter some barriers which need to be eliminated or mitigated. To successfully manage these obstacles, it is crucial to know and study these barriers in speciﬁc context. This research aims to identify and analyse major barriers hampering sustainability implementation in the case of electronics industry in India. Through literature review and experts’ opinion eleven barriers are identiﬁed and classiﬁed into categories of Policy, Human resource and Technology. The hierarchical structure and interrelationship among these barriers is established using Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) methodology. A major ﬁnding in this research is that lack of awareness on beneﬁts of sustainability, lack of regulations and enforcement of environment standards and lack of commitment from top management are signiﬁcant barriers in implementation of a sustainable supply chain. The driving and driven powers of these barriers and their interdependence is determined. Using MICMAC analysis, ﬁve barriers were recognized to be the driver variables, three barriers as dependent variables and three as linkage variables. The barrier lack of performance metrics/evaluation standards on sustainability is having strong dependence power and least driving power implying that it is highly inﬂuenced by other variables. It is found that most of the barriers in the policy category are independent with high driving and inﬂuencing power. The research draws attention to formulate targeted policies at both government and organizational level in the electronics industry for successful implementation of sustainable supply chain management. The modeling gives an insight to organizations in confronting barriers and to manage their resources in an efﬁcient and effective way while making their supply chains sustainable. The paper concludes with ﬁndings and future scope of research being discussed.

Developing a conceptual influence diagram for socio-eco-technical systems analysis of biofouling management in shipping – A Baltic Sea case study

Ship hulls create a vector for the transportation of harmful non-indigenous species (NIS) all over the world. To sustainably prevent NIS introductions, the joint consideration of environmental, economic and social aspects in the search of optimal biofouling management strategies is needed. This article presents a multi-perspective soft systems analysis of the biofouling management problem, based on an extensive literature review and expert knowledge collected in the Baltic Sea area during 2018–2020. The resulting conceptual influence diagram (CID) reveals the multidimensionality of the problem by visualizing the causal relations between the key elements and demonstrating the entanglement of social, ecological and technical aspects. Seen as a boundary object, we suggest the CID can support open dialogue and better risk communication among stakeholders by providing an illustrative and directly applicable starting point for the discussions. It also provides a basis for quantitative management optimization in the future.

Vision-based hand signal recognition in construction: A feasibility study

In construction fields, it is common for workers to rely on hand signals to communicate and express thoughts due to their simple but effective nature. However, the meaning of these hand signals was not always captured precisely. As a result, construction errors and even accidents were produced. This paper presented a feasibility study on investigating whether the hand signals could be captured and interpreted automatically with computer vision technologies. It starts with the literature review of existing hand gesture recognition methods for sign language understanding, human-computer interaction, etc. It is then followed by creating a dataset containing 11 classes of hand signals in construction. The performance of two state-of-the-art 3D convolutional neural networks is measured and compared. The results indicated that a high classification accuracy (93.3%) and a short inference time (0.17 s/gesture) could be achieved, illustrating the feasibility of using computer vision to automate hand signal recognition in construction.

Assessment of customer knowledge management in academic libraries: Design and validation of a checklist

A review of the research background shows that despite the usability of customer knowledge for libraries, the concept of Customer Knowledge Management (CKM) in libraries is rarely addressed. The purpose of this study was to identify the indicators, operational instances as well as the design and validation of an all-inclusive CKM implementation instrument in academic libraries. The study was conducted in two quantitative and qualitative phases. The final instrument was a CKM strategy that consisted of various indicators preliminary designed by drawing on literature review, and operational instances identified by qualitative interviews with 12 academic library managers. A Delphi study with 20 experts was used to assess the experts’ degrees of agreement on the retrieved indicators and instances. The result was a reliable and valid checklist consisting of 67 instances under 6 major and 12 minor indicators. This instrument would allow managers to assess the state of CKM in their aca- demic libraries, improve their library performance by checking the strengths and weaknesses against the in- dicators, and also serve as a basis for training the academic library staff on how to successfully implement CKM. With objective instances, the instrument is expected to improve the quality of customer services, customer satisfaction, and customer loyalty.

The role of digital innovation in knowledge management systems: A systematic literature review
نقش نوآوری دیجیتال در سیستم های مدیریت دانش: مرور ادبیات سیستماتیک-2021
This article investigates the literary corpus on digital innovation in knowledge management systems (KMS) to understand its role in business governance. The study introduces a broad survey of the scientific literature on this topic to understand how digital innovation promotes new business models through the optimization of new knowledge. We carried out a bibliometric analysis on a database, including 46 articles published in the last three decades (1990–2020). All the articles were written in English. The results show that research published on the topic reveals interesting implications for business models and business performance. These findings especially highlight the links between innovation and sustainability, revealing that digital transformation tools contribute over the long-term to the value creation process. This research contributes to the existing literature analyzing the KMS topic by considering it from the digital inno- vation processes perspective, pointing out the need to implement new knowledge creation and to share measures which support global and inclusive growth.

Double accounting in energy footprint and related assessments: How common is it and what are the consequences?

The number of input-output assessments focused on energy has grown considerably in the last years. Many of these assessments combine data from multi-regional input-output (MRIO) databases with energy extensions that completely or partially depict the different stages through which energy products are supplied or used in the economy.
The improper use of some energy extensions can lead to double accounting of some energy flows, but the frequency with which this happens and the potential impact on the results are unknown. Based on a literature review, we estimate that around a quarter of the MRIO-based energy assessments reviewed incurred into double accounting. Using the EXIOBASE MRIO database, we also analyse the effects of double accounting in the absolute values and rankings of different countries’ and products’ energy footprints.
Building on the insights provided by our analysis, we offer a set of key recommendations to MRIO users to avoid the double accounting problem in the future. Likewise, we conclude that the harmonisation of the energy data across MRIO databases led by experts could simplify the choices of the data users until the provision of official energy extensions by statistical offices becomes a widespread practice.

Developing a blockchain framework for the automotive supply chain: A systematic review

As world is affected by demand volatility; process uncertainty; supply chain complexity and information ambiguity forming a VUCA world. To manage this scenario, industries are adopting emerging technologies for business excellence and one among them is Blockchain. Blockchain technology (BCT) is a distributed ledger technology (DLT) that stores transactional records in a tamper-proof and immutable way; it is a promising solution for incorporating transparency and traceability in traditional ecosystem. As automotive industries are facing a Volatile environment, Uncertain schedules & information; Complex supply chain networks, and Ambiguous decisions that cripples the automotive supply chain (ASC). Therefore, BCT can be used to address issues related to ASC in VUCA world. Keeping this in mind, study reported a systematic literature review (SLR) of BCT applications in ASC. More than seventy research papers were reviewed based on different BCT characteristics and applications. Through content analysis, study explored how to link supply chain visibility, information transparency with BCT for an efficient ASC in VUCA world. Moreover, a BCT implementation framework is proposed for ASC, to provide a decision-making approach for practitioners in VUCA world.

Improving supply chain resilience through industry 4:0: A systematic literature review under the impressions of the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most severe supply chain disruptions in history and has challenged practitioners and scholars to improve the resilience of supply chains. Recent technological progress, especially industry 4.0, indicates promising possibilities to mitigate supply chain risks such as the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the literature lacks a comprehensive analysis of the link between industry 4.0 and supply chain resilience. To close this research gap, we present evidence from a systematic literature review, including 62 papers from high-quality journals. Based on a categorization of industry 4.0 enabler technologies and supply chain resilience antecedents, we introduce a holistic framework depicting the relationship between both areas while exploring the current state-of-the-art. To verify industry 4.0’s resilience opportunities in a severe supply chain disruption, we apply our framework to a use case, the COVID-19-affected automotive industry. Overall, our results reveal that big data analytics is particularly suitable for improving supply chain resilience, while other industry 4.0 enabler technologies, including additive manufacturing and cyber-physical systems, still lack proof of effectiveness. Moreover, we demonstrate that visibility and velocity are the resilience antecedents that benefit most from industry 4.0 implementation. We also establish that industry 4.0 holistically supports pre-disruption resilience measures, enabling more effective proactive risk management. Both research and practice can benefit from this study. While scholars may analyze resilience potentials of under-explored enabler technologies, practitioners can use our findings to guide industry 4.0 investment decisions.

Development and validation of INTENSS, a need-supportive training for nurses to support patients self-management

Background: The growing prevalence of chronic illnesses requires nurses to support self-management and help patients integrate the chronic illness into their life. To our knowledge there are currently no training programs that combine the necessary components to adequately enhance nurses competencies in self-management support. Objective: The systematic development and validation of a need-supportive training in self-management support for nurses. Design: A three-phased study, according to van Meijel et al. (2004), with collection of building blocks, design, and validation of the need-supportive character of the training. Setting and participants: Eight training groups with 30 nurses, 34 nursing students and nine social healthcare workers from different nursing colleges in Flanders, Belgium. Methods: In phase one a literature review, current practice analysis, and problem and needs analysis were per- formed. In phase two, the INTENSS training intervention was developed, framed within the Self-Determination Theory and the 5A’s-Model. The training consisted of a basic training module and a video-interaction guidance module. The intervention was subsequently tested in eight training groups (N = 73). Participants provided feedback during focus group discussions. The intervention was cyclically adapted to trainees experiences and suggestions. In phase three, we evaluated the need-supportive character of the training intervention. Results: Phase one indicated the need for training, since nurses application of self-management support was limited and practiced from a narrow medical point of view. In phase two we developed a theory-driven and multifaceted training, building on attitude, knowledge, skills and reflection in the training. The training was framed within the Self-Determination Theory both at the didactical level as well as on content and format. Overall, participants appreciated the building blocks of the training as supporting their basic needs for auton- omy, relatedness and competence. Conclusions: INTENSS, a multifaceted need-supportive training in self-management support was developed, successfully taking into account participants needs.
