1 Risk-averse supplier selection and order allocation in the centralized supply chains under disruption risks
This paper proposes a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model for the integrated supplier selec- tion and order allocation in a centralized supply chain considering the disruption risks and a risk-averse decision- maker. In order to capture a realistic scenario of considering the geographical characteristics of the suppliers, we assume that the suppliers belong to two regions: the buyer’s region (domestic suppliers) and outside of the buyer’s region (foreign suppliers). Considering this realistic feature, the supply chain might face two types of disruption risk: first, local disruption risks which might uniquely occur inside each supplier such as equipment breakdowns, and second, regional disruption risks that might occur in the region of the suppliers located in the same geographical region such as natural hazards. We formulate the problem considering a risk-neutral decision- maker as a benchmark, and then a risk-averse model is presented. In the latter case, we apply two types of risk assessment tools introduced in the finance literature to analyze the decision maker’s behavior: value-at-risk (VaR) and conditional value-at-risk (CVaR). We show that developed models are non-convex programming, and therefore, we apply the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm as the solution approach. We also compare the developed PSO algorithm with the Genetic algorithm (GA) and the commercial GAMS solver to verify the efficiency of the solution method. The computational experiments indicate the impact of the decision maker’s attitude on the supplier selection and the order quantity.

2 Real-time order dispatching for a fleet of autonomous mobile robots using multi-agent reinforcement learning
Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) are increasingly being used to enable efficient material flow in dynamic production environments. Dispatching transport orders in such environments is difficult due to the complexity arising from the rapid changes in the environment as well as due to a tight coupling between dispatching, path planning, and route execution. For order dispatching, an approach is proposed that uses multi-agent reinforcement learning, where AMR agents learn to bid on orders based on their individual observations. The approach is investigated in a robot simulation environment. The results show a more efficient order allocation compared to commonly used dispatching rules.

3 Self-induced learning vs: project-based supplier development for production ramp-up with two supply options
Due to the important role suppliers play in the generation of customer value today, supplier development has attracted the attention of many companies in recent years. One challenge companies wishing to engage in supplier development face is to select both the right suppliers for supplier development as well as adequate supplier development measures and to align supplier development initiatives with the companys remaining sourcing activities. This problem becomes even more pressing during production ramp-up, where an increasing customer demand forces companies to expand the capacities of their supplier base as well. Albeit research on supplier development has enjoyed an increasing popularity in recent years, only a few mathematical models exist to date that support companies in making optimal supplier development decisions. The paper at hand contributes to closing this research gap by developing a decision support model that assists companies in selecting suppliers, in scheduling supplier development projects and in assigning order quantities to selected suppliers. In developing the proposed model, the paper accounts for the fact that suppliers often improve their performance also in the absence of supplier development, and thus considers both self-induced performance improvements at the suppliers as well as performance improvements induced by supplier development projects. The results of a numerical experiment imply that the supplier selection, order allocation and supplier development decisions are subject to complex interactions. The model proposed in this paper supports companies in fitting their supplier development activities to the requirements of the sourcing scenario they face with the intention to maximize profit.

5 An assessment of supply chain disruption mitigation strategies
We assess the effectiveness of incorporating three types of redundancy practices (pre-positioning inventory, backup suppliers, and protected suppliers) into a firm’s supply chain that is exposed to ttwo types of risk: supply risk and environmental risk. Supply risk disrupts an individual supplier, while environmental risk makes a number of suppliers in a given region unavailable. An additional factor is supplier interdependence, where a disruption in one supplier may also disrupt other active suppliers. Utilizing the concept of a decision tree to capture different disruption scenarios, we develop a two-stage mixed-integer programming (two-stage MIP) model as a General Model to address the problem of supplier selection and order allocation under supplier dependencies and risk of disruptions. In the General Model, multi-sourcing is the only supplier strategy that the firm implements. Then we develop three separate extensions of the General Model, one for each of the three redundancy practices, and evaluate the expected supply chain cost of each extended model. We quantitatively show how adding redundancy to the supply chain in different forms, along with contingency plans, can help firms mitigate the impact of supply chain disruptions. The findings suggest that all three strategies reduce costs and risks compared to the General Model. An analysis of reliability, risks, dependence, and costs is conducted on each strategy to provide insights into supplier selection, demand allocation, and capability development in a supply chain under supply chain risks. Finally, we show that regionalizing a supply chain is an effective way to mitigate the negative impacts of environmental disruptions on the supply chain.
