Monetary stimulation, bank relationship and innovation: Evidence from China

Using Chinas four trillion yuan stimulus package of 2008 (4 Trillion Plan) as an exogenous shock, we find that monetary stimulation could benefit the real economy to some extent. Specifically, compared with propensity-score-matched control firms, firms more likely affected by the stimulus plan (e.g., bank-connected firms) are granted with 18% to 24% more patents afterwards. Further evidence shows that the effect of monetary stimulation is more pronounced in firms with financial constraints, in firms located in regions with lower house price growth, and in firms with better corporate governance. Finally, monetary stimulation also increases R&D expenditure, leaving innovation efficiency unaffected.

Mapping innovation dynamics in the Internet of Things domain: Evidence from patent analysis

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging paradigm in the ICT sector and it is at the center of many current political and economic debates. Scholars, executives, and policymakers are becoming increasingly interested in understanding how to turn the IoT into reality, since various technological constraints (e.g., standardization and interoperability) limit the possibility of realizing an inclusive IoT information network. These constraints are exacerbated by the lack of a clear picture of the innovation dynamics and technology evolution of the IoT. This paper seeks to address this gap by mapping the development of IoT technologies. In particular, we have collected 61,972 IoT patents filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty in the period 2000–2012. We analyze temporal trends, cross-country dynamics and identity of the applicants. Moreover, we provide insights about the development of the most relevant IoT technologies by looking at triadic patent families.

Standards as a driving force that influences emerging technological trajectories in the converging world of the Internet and things: An investigation of the M2M/IoT patent network

While standards are said to create windows of opportunity in facilitation of technological convergence, it is not clear how they affect technological trajectories and strategic choices of firms in the face of convergence and in the process of catch-up. There is little research on the relationship between standards and technological trajectories, particularly in the age of convergence. This paper investigates how standards shape the emerging M2M/IoT technological trajectory and influence convergence in terms of technological importance and diversity. We, firstly, found that standards are a driving force of technological convergence. The second finding is that 3GPP standards assume a crucial role in setting the boundary conditions of the M2M/IoT technological systems. Third, we identified strategic groups and strategic patents that centered around the M2M/IoT trajectory. Forth, standards serve as an important factor in the process of creating a new path for catch-up firms (e.g. Huawei). These findings make contributions to innovation and standards studies by empirically examining the relationship between technological trajectories and standards. Furthermore, they clearly cast light on ongoing cooperation and competition along the M2M/IoT trajectory, and offer practical implications for catch-up strategies.

Enhancing national innovative capacity: The impact of high-tech international trade and inward foreign direct investment
افزایش ظرفیت نوآوری ملی: تأثیر تجارت بین المللی با تکنولوژی بالا و سرمایه گذاری مستقیم خارجی در داخل-2017
Innovation productivity differs across economies and latecomer countries are working hard to close the gap with developed countries. An investigation of 80 countries in the years of 1981–2010 shows that international patenting activities vary across countries. We also find that both high-tech related international export and inward foreign direct investment significantly contributes to emerging countries’ ability to produce cutting-edge technologies, but this effect does not exist for leading innovator countries. Moreover, although this study shows strong intellectual property rights (IPRs) protection is highly correlated with international patenting activities in leading innovator countries, it has a negative impact on emerging innovator countries’ national innovative capacity. The findings thus help better understand the role of international economic activities and IPR in enhancing national innovative capacity, and facilitate emerging countries’ effort to catch up with leading innovator countries.

Collaborative and Legal Dynamics of International R&D: Evolving Patterns in East Asia

International R&D collaboration is perceived as important R&D strategy to obtain complementary resources, to learn from the partner as well as to share risks and costs. Previous studies suggested that international R&D col laboration has positive impacts but the impacts investigated in literature are either not clearly defined or largely focused on business or technology. This study attempts to investigate collaborative influence and legal value of international R&D by analyzing East Asian collaborative patents with multiple assignee countries from the per spectives of social network theory and cross-country patent infringement probability. It is found that internation al R&D is positively related to both collaborative influence and legal value. The evolving pattern shows that China and Taiwan are the most prolific and fastest-growing patenting countries. Also, Taiwan is the most important partner country in East Asias internationalization of R&D. Two important contributions of this study can be sum marized as follows: 1) this study defines collaborative influence and legal value based on which the dynamics of East Asias international R&D collaboration can be obtained, 2) the legal value defined in this study can be used to evaluate patent value and the quality of R&D partnership in East Asia.

Cleaning of Atmospheric Air in a City Street and Road Network as an Environmental Safety Technology for Road Transport

The article provides scientific basis for a new innovative concept of cleaning the polluted ambient air in a city road network during road transportation and a calculative model for changes in concentrations of polluting agents for mobile cleaning units used as part of road traffic flow. The article describes the design of equipment (reactor) used to decontaminate the toxic components of exhaust gas and disperse particles and explains its difference from the existing facilities by its function to clean the air within a city highway with a wide speed range of dust and exhaust gas flows (proved by two patents of the RF: No.2237816, No.3231858).

Unconnected component inclusion technique for patent network analysis: Case study of Internet of Things-related technologies
تکنیک ورودی جزء غیر مرتبط برای تجزیه و تحلیل شبکه های ثبت اختراع: مطالعه موردی فن آوری های مرتبط با اینترنت اشیاء-2016
In this study, we propose an unconnected component inclusion technique (UCIT) for patent citation analysis. Our method generates a cluster solution that includes unconnected and connected components of a direct citation network, enabling a more complete analysis of the technology fields. Case studies of Internet of Things-related technologies were con ducted to test the effectiveness of our proposed method. We observed that UCIT increased the number of nodes especially in relatively small networks. Additionally, we analyzed how the clusters changed by adding unconnected patents to the citation network and identified four types of clustering phenomenon. Our method can be used by patent officers, R&D man agers, and policy makers when they want to understand the technology landscape better.

Venture capital investments and the technological performance of portfolio firms

What is the relationship between venture capitalists’ selection of investment targets and the effects of these investments on the patenting performance of portfolio companies? In this paper, we set out a modelling and estimation framework designed to discover whether venture capital (VC) increases the patentingperformanceoffirmsorwhetherthiseffectisaconsequenceofpriorinvestmentselectionbased on firms’ patent output. We develop simultaneous models predicting the likelihood that firms attract VC financing, the likelihood that they patent, and the number of patents applied for and granted. Fully accounting for the endogeneity of investment, we find that the effect of VC on patenting is insignificant or negative, in contrast to the results generated by simpler models with independent equations. Our findings show that venture capitalists follow patent signals to invest in companies with commercially viable know-how and suggest that they are more likely to rationalise, rather than increase, the patenting output of portfolio firms.
