“I have the right to feel safe”: Evaluation of a school-based child sexual abuse prevention program in Ecuador
"من حق دارم احساس امنیت کنم": ارزیابی برنامه پیشگیری از سوءاستفاده جنسی کودکان مبتنی بر مدرسه در اکوادور-2019 Background: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a complex public health problem that has lifelong implications
for children’s wellbeing. Interventions may provide children strategies to protect
themselves against CSA, but few have been studied in Latin America.
Objective: Evaluate the immediate and medium-term impact of a 10-week educational program
on children’s knowledge of CSA self-protection strategies in Ecuador.
Participants and settings: Children aged 7–12 years from six public elementary schools in Ecuador
were cluster-randomized to either receive the intervention between October and November 2016
(Group 1, k=4) or between March and April 2017 (Group 2, k=2).
Methods: To assess CSA knowledge, a random sample of students completed a questionnaire at
three time points: 1) initial: before any group received the intervention, 2) intermediate: immediately
after Group 1 completed the program but before Group 2 started it, and 3) final: after
Group 2 completed the program. We evaluated changes in scores using mixed linear regression
models with school as a clustering variable and adjusted degrees of freedom (df=4).
Results: Pre-post effect estimates at program completion adjusted for age, sex and clustering by
school were 6.5% (95% CI: 2.9, 10.0) and 6.8% (95% CI 3.0, 10.7) for Groups 1 and 2, respectively.
Scores did not change among children who had not yet received the intervention at
intermediate evaluation (0.94%, 95%CI: −6.0, 7.9). Children in Group 1 maintained the scores
six months after the program ended.
Conclusions: The self-protection program increased and maintained CSA knowledge six months
after the intervention finished. Keywords: Child sexual abuse | Prevention | Primary schools | Self-protection | Low and middle income countries | Latin America |

Economic crisis and public education. A productivity analysis using a Hicks-Moorsteen index
Hicks-Moorsteen-2018 The economic crisis forced politicians to make public finances sustainable. The education sector was one of the
most adversely affected by control of public expenditure. This paper analyzes the drivers causing productivity
changes of especially vulnerable public schools during the crisis. We use the Hicks-Moorsteen index, which is a
seldom applied methodology that leads to feasible results under variable returns to scale. To illustrate the benefits
of this index, we use a sample of 298 Catalan public primary schools between 2009 (when budgetary constraints
started) and 2014. The results reveal that during the crisis schools improved their total factor productivity by
raising academic achievement despite cutbacks in resources. We also found that there was a strong convergence
pattern during the financial crisis, driven by the catch-up process of some schools. The findings have important
policy implications, suggesting that a monitoring system should be set up for use by policy makers.

‘This is a competition’: The relationship between examination pressure and gender violence in primary schools in Kenya
"این یک رقابت است": رابطه بین فشار آزمایش و تجاوز جنسیتی در مدارس ابتدایی در کنیا-2018 This study explores the relationship between gender violence in schools and teaching and learning processes in two case study primary schools in Kirinyaga County, Kenya. For seven months in 2015, the following qualitative methods were used: participant observation, individual teacher interviews, individual art-based student interviews and member-check interviews with teachers and students. Findings indicate that examination pressure can directly and indirectly perpetuate gender violence in schools by using corporal punishment and public humiliation as motivational tools and by diverting resources from efforts to enhance safety and equality to ever more time for exam preparation.

Adolescent girls’ primary school mobility and educational outcomes in urban Kenya
تغییرپذیری مدرسه ابتدایی دختران بالغ و خروجی های آموزشی در شهرهای کنیا-2018 With hundreds of primary schools to choose from, young adolescent girls in Nairobi’s urban informal settlements commonly transfer schools. We qualitatively investigate the causes and quantitatively investigate the consequences of such mobility. Key reasons for transferring schools include difficulty in paying fees and anticipated net benefits from a different school. Transferring during lower primary leads to a poorer resourced school, while transferring during upper primary a higher resourced school. Correspondingly, transfers during lower primary are associated with falling behind, while in upper primary with getting ahead, as well as with improved basic reading and math test scores.
