Customer-centric prioritization of process improvement projects

centricity becoming an important success factor, companies must drive customer satisfaction not only
through excellent products but also through customer-centric processes. As many companies face an abundance
of action possibilities, fast-changing customer needs, and scarce resources, guidance regarding the customercentric
prioritization of process improvement projects is in high need. As existing approaches predominantly
focus on process efficiency, we propose a decision model that accounts for the effects of process improvement on
customer centricity in line with justificatory knowledge on value-based process decision-making, project portfolio
selection, and the measurement of customer satisfaction. When building the decision model, we adopted
the design science paradigm and used multi-criteria decision analysis as well as normative analytical modeling as
research methods. We evaluated the model by discussing it with practitioners, by building a software prototype,
and by applying it at a German insurance company. Overall, our research extends the prescriptive knowledge on

Evaluating the implementation of a prisoner re-entry initiative for individuals with opioid use and mental health disorders: Application of the consolidated framework for implementation research in a cross-system initiative

opioid crisis has created an urgent need for treatment, including medication assisted treatment, among justiceinvolved
populations. Implementation research plays an important role in improving systems of care and integration
of evidence-based practices within and outside of criminal justice institutions. The current study is a
formative qualitative evaluation of the implementation of a cross-system (corrections and community-based)
opioid use treatment initiative supported by Opioid State Targeted Response (STR) funding. The purpose of the
study is to assess the fit of the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) to a cross-system
initiative, and to identify key barriers and facilitators to implementation.
The process evaluation showed that adaptability of the clinical model and staff flexibility were critical to
implementation. Cultural and procedural differences across correctional facilities and community-based treatment
programs required frequent and structured forums for cross-system communication. Challenges related to
recruitment and enrollment, staffing, MAT, and data collection were addressed through the collaborative development
and continuous review of policies and procedures.
This study found CFIR to be a useful framework for understanding implementation uptake and barriers. The
framework was particularly valuable in reinforcing the use of implementation research as a means for continuous
process improvement. CFIR is a comprehensive and flexible framework that may be adopted in future

Supporting the deployment of ISO-based project management processes with agile metrics

traditional process models. This research analyses how by defining and monitoring a set of Agile metrics, Agile
mature companies can be also conformant with the best practices proposed by the targeted ISO process reference
models. Conformance has been identified with five Technical Management processes of the ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207
standard and with two activities of the Project Management process of the ISO/IEC TR 29110-5-1-2 standard.
The findings may be of the interest of those Agile settings that need to work according to the process model

Design and development of a simulation-based decision support tool to improve the production process at an engineered wood products mill
طراحی و توسعه یک ابزار پشتیبانی از تصمیم مبتنی بر شبیه سازی برای بهبود فرآیند تولید در یک آسیاب محصولات چوبی مهندسی-2018 The demand for engineered wood products has been increasing due to their advantages over solid wood in many applications and the need for efficient and sustainable use of natural resources. In order to meet the growing demand of products, managers seek continuous improvement in the production process, which involves complex and interrelated decisions. Simulation-based decision support tools are proven beneficial when dealing with complex managerial decisions, especially in manufacturing systems. In this research, real industrial data are used and a decision support tool is developed to assist the managers of an engineered wood products mill in Canada to analyze the production process, and evaluate alternative configurations and workers assignment to increase the throughput. This paper presents the first attempt in the forest industry simulation literature that incorporates the interactions between the operators and multiple machines. An important outcome of this research was to prevent substantial monetary implications of replacing a piece of equipment. While managers believed that replacing a piece of equipment (sizer) with a more modern one would eliminate the production bottleneck and increase the throughput, the results of the simulation model showed that it would only shift the bottleneck in the mill without any meaningful benefits. The evaluation of worker-machine interactions within the entire mill provided another important finding. It indicated that the addition of a worker and the automation of the conveyor could increase the throughput by almost 21%.

Frustration-driven process improvement

employment-related frustrations–—doing so on accessible, visually prominent
media–—process improvement becomes upgraded to operate in a truly continuous
mode. Frustrations are a superior target of process improvement in that they get at
deep-seated concerns of people who have first-order process awareness and are most
directly impacted by process failings. Recording frustrations not only provides a
sound basis for pressing on to solutions, but it is also cathartic. The act of recording
frustrations prominently on company-sanctioned media provides a positive outlet for
the frustrations themselves.

Developing an integrated framework for using data mining techniques and ontology concepts for process improvement
توسعه چارچوب یکپارچه برای استفاده از تکنیک های داده کاوی و مفاهیم هستی شناسی برای بهبود فرایند-2018 Process, as an important knowledge resource, must be effectively managed and improved. The main prob
lems are the large number of processes, their specific features, and the complicated relationships between
them, which all lead to the increase in complexity and create a high-dimensionality problem. Traditional
process management systems are unable to manage and improve processes with a high volume of data.
Data mining techniques, however, can be employed to identify valuable patterns. With the aid of these
patterns, suggestions for process improvement can be presented. Further, process ontology can be ap
plied to share the process patterns between people, facilitate the process understanding, and develop the
reusability of the extracted patterns for process improvement.
This study presents a combined three-part, five-stage framework of data mining, process improve
ment, and process ontology. To evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed framework, a
real process dataset is applied. Two clustering and classification techniques are used to discover valuable
patterns as the process ontology. The output of these two techniques can be considered as the recom
mendations for improving the processes. The proposed framework can be exploited to support process
improvement methodologies in organizations.

Application of the SEIPS Model to Analyze Medication Safety in a Crisis Residential Center

research is found in the literature regarding mental health settings. Because mental health settings are complex,
medication administration is vulnerable to a variety of errors from transcription to administration. The purpose
of this study was to analyze critical factors related to a mental health work system structure and processes that
threaten safe medication administration practices.
Background: The Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) model provides a framework to
analyze factors affecting medication safety. The model approach analyzes the work system concepts of tech
nology, tasks, persons, environment, and organization to guide the collection of data.
Methods: In the study, the Lean methodology tools were used to identify vulnerabilities in the system that could
be targeted later for improvement activities. The project director completed face-to-face interviews, asked nurses
to record disruptions in a log, and administered a questionnaire to nursing staff. The project director also
conducted medication chart reviews and recorded medication errors using a standardized taxonomy for errors
that allowed categorization of the prevalent types of medication errors.
Results: Results of the study revealed disruptions during the medication process, pharmacology training needs,
and documentation processes as the primary opportunities for improvement. The project engaged nurses to
identify sustainable quality improvement strategies to improve patient safety.
Conclusion: The mental health setting carries challenges for safe medication administration practices. Through
analysis of the structure, process, and outcomes of medication administration, opportunities for quality im
provement and sustainable interventions were identified, including minimizing the number of distractions
during medication administration, training nurses on psychotropic medications, and improving the doc
umentation system. A task force was created to analyze the descriptive data and to establish objectives aimed at
improving efficiency of the work system and care process involved in medication administration at the end of the
project.

Discovering role interaction models in the Emergency Room using Process Mining

processes is critical to promptly care for patients who arrive at the hospital in a delicate health condition,
claiming for an immediate attention. The aims of this study are (i) to discover role interaction models in (ER)
processes using process mining techniques; (ii) to understand how healthcare professionals are currently collaborating; and (iii) to provide useful knowledge that can help to improve ER processes.
Methods: A four step method based on process mining techniques is proposed. An ER process of a university
hospital was considered as a case study, using 7160 episodes that contains specific ER episode attributes.
Results: Insights about how healthcare professionals collaborate in the ER was discovered, including the identification of a prevalent role interaction model along the major triage categories and specific role interaction
models for different diagnoses. Also, common and exceptional professional interaction models were discovered
at the role level.
Conclusions: This study allows the discovery of role interaction models through the use of real-life clinical data
and process mining techniques. Results show a useful way of providing relevant insights about how healthcare
professionals collaborate, uncovering opportunities for process improvement.
