1 Conceptual MINLP approach to the development of a CO2 supply chain network – Simultaneous consideration of capture and utilization process flowsheets

A large fraction of anthropogenic CO2 emissions comes from large point sources such as power plants, petroleum refineries, and large industrial facilities. A significant decrease of these CO2 emissions can be achieved with CO2 capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. This study proposes a conceptually simplified model for the optimization of combined CO2 supply networks and capture and utilization technologies by the mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) approach. The objective is to maximize the profit of CCUS technologies, considering chemisorption using methyl-diethanolamine (MDEA) as a capture technology and conversion of CO2 to CH3OH as a utilization technology. Additionally, avoided tax from reduced CO2 emissions is considered as a revenue. A hypothetical case study of five larger point sources of CO2 was investigated, namely coal power plants, biogas plant, aluminium production plant and two cement plants. Two scenarios were considered: i) Scenario A considering different values of the CO2 tax, and ii) Scenario B considering different flue gas flowrates at different values of the CO2 tax. The results show the potential of model-based optimization in reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by CCUS technology. Furthermore, the results in Scenario A show that CCUStechnology is only profitable if the price of CO2 emissions is higher than 110 €/t emitted CO2. Moreover, the results in Scenario B show that both the profit and the production of CH3OH depend to a large extent on the flue gas flow.

2 Optimization of extended business processes in digital supply chains using mathematical programming
بهینه سازی فرآیندهای تجاری گسترده در زنجیره های تأمین دیجیتال با استفاده از برنامه ریزی ریاضی-2021
We propose a mathematical programming approach to optimize the business process transactions in digital supply chains. Five scheduling models from the Process Systems Engineering (PSE) area are applied to schedule the processing of orders in a simplified Order-To-Cash (OTC) business process, which is modeled as a multistage network with parallel units (agents). Two case studies are presented to compare the performance of the scheduling models on various sizes of a flexible jobshop representation of the OTC process. The models are compared and scaled to select those that are more suitable to this application. The continuous-time general precedence model provides an accurate representation of the real system and performs well for small instances. The discrete-time State-Task Network (STN), however, proves most efficient in terms of tractability, despite the well-known limitations resulting from discretizing time. The tightness of the linear programming (LP) relaxations in the discrete-time STN framework, as well as the ability of commercial solvers to perform preprocessing and apply heuristics to the STN formulation, enables finding near optimal solutions quickly even for larger instances.

3 Heat recovery in an actual LNG supply chain: Retrofitting of designed heat exchange networks (HENs) for potential fuel saving

The demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is steadily increasing and projected to become an important component of global energy demand. Although LNG processing requires high-energy to convert the gas into liquid, it is still the most preferable method of supply due to technical, economic, safety, and political reasons. Energy integration strategies and process optimization between units have been emphasized as ways to reduce energy demand. In this study, a rigorous simulation for proposed heat exchanger networks (HENs) between sulfur recovery units (SRU) and gas sweetening units (GSU) that exhibit heat sources and sinks was conducted. The HENs were designed using pinch analysis tools in Aspen Energy Analyzer (AEA) and were used to determine the maximum energy recovery and potential fuel savings after retrofitting within LNG supply chain. The feasibility of retrofitting the HENs into LNG plant without affecting process conditions or product quality was also determined. Although universal HEN reduces energy consumption of the existing plant by 68%, the network complexity limits its practical application. Simplified HENs between the sub-units reduced energy demand by 50% and achieved fuel saving of 34%. Retrofitting HENs improved existing LNG energy integration, enhanced process economy, reduced fossil fuel burning and protected the environment.

5 Reinforcement learning for batch bioprocess optimization

Bioprocesses have received a lot of attention to produce clean and sustainable alternatives to fossil-based materials. However, they are generally difficult to optimize due to their unsteady-state operation modes and stochastic behaviours. Furthermore, biological systems are highly complex, therefore plant-model mismatch is often present. To address the aforementioned challenges we propose a Reinforcement learn- ing based optimization strategy for batch processes. In this work we applied the Policy Gradient method from batch-to-batch to update a control policy parametrized by a recurrent neural network. We assume that a preliminary process model is available, which is exploited to obtain a preliminary optimal control policy. Subsequently, this policy is updated based on measurements from the true plant. The capabilities of our proposed approach were tested on three case studies (one of which is nonsmooth) using a more complex process model for the true system embedded with adequate process disturbance. Lastly, we discussed advantages and disadvantages of this strategy compared against current existing approaches such as nonlinear model predictive control.
