1 Knowledge management capabilities and organizational risk-taking for business model innovation in SMEs

In today’s business environment with fast growing communication and information technologies, knowledge management (KM) capabilities are a valuable source for innovation. However, little is known about the particular KM capabilities that lead to business model innovation (BMI) and whether their effect is dependent upon the firm’s orientation towards risk-taking. We examine the impact internal and external KM capabilities have on BMI and how these effects are moderated by its risk-taking tolerance. We empirically analyze a sample of 197 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) applying structural equation modeling (SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). The results from the SEM indicate that particularly external KM ca- pabilities stimulate BMI. This relationship is strengthened for firms with a high risk-taking tolerance. Internal knowledge is only effective for firms with a low risk-taking tolerance. The fsQCA results substantiate these findings and refine the SEM by providing particular antecedent conditions for high levels of BMI.

3 Litigation and corporate risk taking: Evidence from Chinese listed firms

Corporate risk-taking plays a crucial role in their development and in overall economic growth. With the increase in market uncertainty and the advancement of the legalization process, the probability of companies being involved in lawsuits has continued to increase. How does a company’s litigation experience affect its risk-taking? Is it “once bitten, twice shy” or will it be “take a nap, grow up with wisdom?” Furthermore, what strategies can be implemented by a company to enhance its risk-taking? Using the difference-in-differences method, this study adopts the data of listed companies from 2000 to 2015 to examine the impact of litigation on corporate risk-taking and its internal mechanism. Two main findings are obtained. First, the indicted experience significantly improves a company’s risk-taking. Second, this “learning effect” is embodied as “nonproductive activities,” and the accused enterprises can realize property right protection and risk-taking by reducing R&D investment and increasing rentseeking investment. These findings are proven to be valid after a series of robust tests. The orientation of entrepreneurship is highly dependent on the institutional environment where a company is located. In the transitional period, truly enhancing the risk-taking of enterprises and giving play to the “productive function” of the entrepreneurial spirit are needed to continuously strengthen the system construction of a company’s operating environment and create a fair and just legal environment.

4 How signal intensity of behavioral orientations affects crowdfunding performance: The role of entrepreneurial orientation in crowdfunding business ventures

Backers assess a crowdfunding campaign description not merely for a project’s capacity to deliver a reward, but also for the manner in which that reward is delivered. Viewed through the lens of signalling theory, crowd- funding performance depends on the signals of behavioural orientations. While earlier research has explored the positive and negative effects of signals of behavioural orientation, signal intensity merits exploration. We ex- plored signal intensity among 48,628 reward-based crowdfunding campaigns and focused on entrepreneurial orientation to categorize signals of behavioural orientations. We show that signals of autonomy, innovativeness, competitive aggressiveness, and risk-taking have an inverted-U-shaped relationship with crowdfunding perfor- mance. Signals of proactiveness have a positive non-monotonic relationship with crowdfunding performance.

6 The impact of off-balance-sheet regulations on bank risk-taking: Evidence from China

The release of new asset management rules has played a positive role in regulating the asset management business of financial institutions, preventing and controlling financial risk. It has also had an important impact on the management of banks’ off-balance-sheet (OBS) innovation. This paper uses unbalanced panel data on 75 commercial banks in China from 2007 to 2017 and combines a theoretical and an empirical model to study the development of bank OBS innovation and bank risk taking from the perspective of new asset management regulations. The analysis finds (1) the rapid development of OBS innovation will increase bank risk taking and (2) the solution to the problem of rigid payment is conducive to reducing the risk taken by Chinese commercial banks when providing OBS innovation.

7 Influence of Chinese managerial soft power on African skills development
تأثیر قدرت نرم چینی بر رشد مهارت های آفریقایی-2020
Through the prism of soft power theory, this paper examines the influence of Chinese managerial soft power on the development of management skills by Africans who had previously studied in China before returning to Africa to run their own businesses. From a thematic analysis of semi-structured interview data, we identify themes emerging from the cognitive repertoire of African managers after their cultural adaptation in China. The themes include network development, risk-taking, optimism and pragmatism. The results of this study help to shed light on how international activities such as study abroad programs affect business management skills and provide new understanding of soft power for the field of business studies. The study shows that China influences not only through aid, foreign investments and its economic model but also through the diffusion of its management ideas via soft power.

8 Bank risk, competition and bank connectedness with firms: A literature review

The outbreak of the 2007–2009 financial crisis and of the European sovereign debt crisis again raised questions about the vulnerability and the behaviour of banking institutions. The unconventional monetary policies that followed have flattened the yield curve and created a low interest rates environment. This can give rise to risk-taking behaviour from banks and can therefore undermine the stability of the banking system with negative impact of the credit supply, corporate investment and real economy. This article proposes a literature review on the main determinants of bank lending and risk-taking decisions, going through the competition in the banking market, the bank connectedness with firms and the role of monetary and banking authorities. The systemic risk concept is also discussed as well as its drivers and potential measures that should be monitored by prudential authorities in order to preserve financial stability.

9 Deferred cash compensation and risk-taking: Evidence from the Chinese banking industry

Starting in 2010, the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) mandated that between 40% and 50% of the annual variable compensation of senior commercial bank managers be paid over the subsequent 3 years or longer. We examine the implications of the CBRC deferred compensation regulation for bank risk-taking using a sample of 156 bank executives from 14 listed Chinese commercial banks. We find that before the 2010 regulation, high-risk banks deferred executive compensation less than low-risk banks. We also find that banks reduced their risktaking after the 2010 regulation, and the reduction was greater for banks with higher pre-regulation risk. Unlike prior research which examines equity compensation, we provide evidence on the use of deferred executive cash compensation and its implications for bank risk-taking in an emerging market

10 Bank performance in China: A Perspective from Bank efficiency, risk-taking and market competition
عملکرد بانک در چین: دیدگاهی از کارآیی بانک ، ریسک پذیری و رقابت در بازار-2019
The current paper contributes to the empirical literature on bank profitability by testing the jointimpact of different types of risk, competition in different banking markets and different types of efficiency on bank profitability using a sample of Chinese commercial banks over the period 2003–2017. In particular, we fill in the gap of the empirical studies by examining the impact of efficiency on profitability when banks undertake different levels of risk-taking behaviour and face different degrees of competition. The results show that competition in the Chinese banking markets (deposit market, loan market and non-interest income market) is stronger over the period 2003–2005 and also 2014–2017. In addition, it is found that bank size, cost efficiency, profit efficiency and inflation are significantly related to bank profitability. Finally, we find that the positive impact of cost efficiency on profitability is stronger when banks undertake higher levels of risk and face more competition.
