1 Evaluation of the implementation of a subset of ISO/IEC 29110 Software Implementation process in four teams of undergraduate students of Ecuador. An empirical software engineering experiment

The competitiveness of software development companies depends on their ability to offer software products with quality attributes within approved budget and schedule. Most Very Small Entities (VSEs) that develop software do not see the benefits of implementing software standards. Consequently, they limit their potential to be recognised as quality software development entities. In this study, the authors present results obtained through the application of empirical software engineering in an experiment in which the ISO/IEC TR 29110–5–1–2 “Software engineering – Lifecycle profiles for Very Small Entities (VSEs) – Part 5–1–2: Management and engineering guide: Generic profile group: Basic profile” was used. The guide includes two processes: Project Management (PM) process and Software Implementation (SI) process. The objective of the project was the development of a software product for the scheduling of medical appointments for the Student Wellness Center of a university of Ecuador. Four teams of undergraduate students were involved. Two of them (controlled teams) implemented a subset of the SI process, while the other two (non-controlled teams) had freedom to choose development activities that were subsequently mapped with the activities of the standard. All teams developed the software product using the SCRUM framework within the same timeframe. Although the experiment was focused on the SI process, the teams also used a tailored version of the PM process defined by the professors. The experiment execution encountered several difficulties. For example, the timeframe of six weeks established in the design of the experiment was too short since students worked part time in the project. All the teams experienced this difficulty, especially when they had to construct and test the software components. Overall, the teams that used the ISO/IEC TR 29110–5–1–2 guide achieved better scores in the quality evaluation of their software processes.

As the number of devices and platforms gradually increased that serve as a medium for online banking services, the number of replicated services for different platforms also increase. Each service has a different representation in a different platform even though targeting the same business objectives. This situation results in the problem of re-developing similar set of requirements for different devices and services which in turn results in multiplied effort in software development and degradation in the software quality because of the replicated code. The objective of this paper is to present a device independent user interface development approach that eliminates the replicated user interface development effort of the same set of services for different platforms/devices while increasing the presentation performance. In this context, we provide a basic technique that uses a json based user interface definition format, called omni-script, to separate the representation of banking services in different platforms/devices, so called channels. Omni-script is a pioneering solution being used in a real development environment in banking software domain that is experiencing a shift towards omni-channel user experience, where users are able to seamlessly continue using banking services in different platforms and devices. As the evaluation method, we have measured the actual development effort on a representative sample development team and a set of services. Additionally, we later deployed and measured the rendering time and the amount of data communication for the proposed approach in a real production environment. Production deployment resulted in a remarkable decrease in data communication and in loading times at the client side. As importantly, the proposed approach also resulted in a nearly 75% decrease in service development time by enabling analysts to produce user interface prototypes that can be integrated to service development with minimal effor

3 Software sustainability: Research and practice from a software architecture viewpoint

Context: Modern societies are highly dependent on complex, large-scale, software-intensive systems that increasingly operate within an environment of continuous availability, which is challenging to maintain and evolve in response to the inevitable changes in stakeholder goals and requirements of the system. Software architectures are the foundation of any software system and provide a mechanism for reason ing about core software quality requirements. Their sustainability – the capacity to endure in changing environments – is a critical concern for software architecture research and practice. Problem: Accidental software complexity accrues both naturally and gradually over time as part of the overall software design and development process. From a software architecture perspective, this allows several issues to overlap including, but not limited to: the accumulation of technical debt design deci sions of individual components and systems leading to coupling and cohesion issues; the application of tacit architectural knowledge resulting in unsystematic and undocumented design decisions; architectural knowledge vaporisation of design choices and the continued ability of the organization to understand the architecture of its systems; sustainability debt and the broader cumulative effects of flawed architectural design choices over time resulting in code smells, architectural brittleness, erosion, and drift, which ulti mately lead to decay and software death. Sustainable software architectures are required to evolve over the entire lifecycle of the system from initial design inception to end-of-life to achieve efficient and ef fective maintenance and evolutionary change. Method: This article outlines general principles and perspectives on sustainability with regards to soft ware systems to provide a context and terminology for framing the discourse on software architectures and sustainability. Focusing on the capacity of software architectures and architectural design choices to endure over time, it highlights some of the recent research trends and approaches with regards to ex plicitly addressing sustainability in the context of software architectures. Contribution: The principal aim of this article is to provide a foundation and roadmap of emerging re search themes in the area of sustainable software architectures highlighting recent trends, and open is sues and research challenges.

4 Toward software quality enhancement by Customer Knowledge Management in software companies

Customer Knowledge Management (CKM) plays an important role in the production of high quality software products. As CKM in Enterprise Software (ES) development is still immature, this raises questions on how CKM enablers can be used to help ES development companies improve their software quality. In this study, Human, Organizational and Technological CKM enablers were identified from the literature. The weights of these factors were determined by experts from the ES development companies. Based on the most important factors, a theoretical model was developed. The proposed model was evaluated by distributing a survey questionnaire to decision makers in ES development companies. The results showed that “Customer Involvement” together with “Trust” were the most influential factors, followed by “CRM Technology Infrastructure” and “Cross-Functional Cooperation”. In addition, there was no impact from “Organizational Training”, “Customer Knowledge Map”, and “CKM Strategy Development”. The results also re vealed that the impact of CKM on software quality is significant. The proposed model in this study can be used as a guideline for the successful application of CKM in ES development companies to improve the software quality.

5 Open source computer game application: An empirical analysis of quality concerns

A computer game is one of the major sources of entertainment. People nowadays spend a lot of time while playing computer games. Open Source Software (OSS), despite some reservations on the quality, has been steadily increasing its popularity. The uncontrolled change management foresees an increase in the complexity of the methods and classes in an application, which sometimes result in poor quality. The number of OSS projects dealing with computer game development are on the increase, which lead to more research interests in assessing the quality of OSS resulting products. Some studies that deal with the evaluating the OSS quality, concerns use user’s survey approach focusing on the usability aspects. The empirical investigations to evaluate the quality concerns of the design, using internal code attributes, needs attention of researchers. In this study, we aim to investigate the quality concerns of the design complexity of methods in OSS computer game applications using internal code attributes. We use three quality criteria, namely correctness, reliability and maintainability from the set of six factors of ISO 9126 model. We collect data from 55 OSS computer game applications and use various statistical analysis tech- niques to examine the research question of this study. We conclude that the methods of the OSS com- puter game applications demonstrate an acceptable level of quality in the three criteria of correctness, reliability and maintainability.© 2017 Elsevier B.V. 6 An improved strategic information management plan for medical institutes

The driving force behind software development of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) has been gradually changing. Heterogeneous software requirements have emerged, so how to correctly carry out development pro- ject has become a complex task. This paper adopts the knowledge engineering and management mechanism, i.e., CommonKADS, and software quality engineering to improve existing strategic information management (SIM) plan as a design methodology to help software implementation for medical institutes. We evaluate the adopting performance by a real case that examines the maturity level of the architecture alignment between the target so- lution in the proposed SIM plan and the built medical system.© 2015 Elsevier B.V. نیروی محرک موجود در پشت توسعه نرم افزاری " ثبت الکترونکی داده های پزشکی" (EMR)، به تدریج در حال تغییر بوده است. نیازهای نرم افزاری ناهمگن و غیریکنواختی پدیدار شده است و بنابراین چگونگی انجام صحیح فرآیند توسعه، یک وظیفه پیچیده شده است. این مقاله، مهندسی دانش و مکانیزم مدیریت یعنی KADS معمول و نیز مهندسی کیفیت نرم افزار را برای بهبود برنامه مدیریت راهبُردی فعلی اطلاعات (SIM) به کار گرفته است تا با طراحی روشی، به اجرای نرم افزاری در موسسات پزشکی کمک کند. ما انجام این روش از طریق یک مورد واقعی را بررسی می کنیم که سطح تکامل همترازی ساختاری بین راه حل هدف در برنامه مدیریت راهبُردی اطلاعات و سیستمِ از پیش ساخته پزشکی را مورد آزمایش قرار می دهد.

8 Towards a quality model of technical aspects for mobile learning services: An empirical investigation

Quality issues are commonly reported following the development of mobile learning applications. To evaluate and increase the chance of the successful development of new mobile learning products, the adoption of a complete and well-defined set of technical quality aspects for mobile learning development and their adoption in the education environment are proposed. This work describes a model that cap- tures most abstract and generic technical aspects of mobile learning service quality, including availability, fast response times, flexibility, scalability, usability, maintainability, functionality, functionality, reli- ability, connectivity, performance, user interface and security. A set of technical quality aspects was developed following a literature study focussing on standards and guidelines for learning and mobile application software quality. The presented case studies point to a set of contextual technical quality factors that influence the choice of mobile learning application. The findings also indicate that there are causal relationships between learner satisfaction and the overall proposed model technical quality as- pects. The model has a positive impact on overall learning process outcomes by evaluating the technical aspects while maintaining the quality of mobile learning delivered. The model components purportedly affect learning outcomes by assessing and improving the acceptability to stakeholders of the technical aspects of mobile learning.© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. هرچه سطح ریسک بالاتر برود، ایمنی بیشتر کاهش می¬یابد و بالعکس. تاریخچه¬ی ارزیابی ریسک از نقطه-ی بررسی حادثه به سوی از پیش تعیین نمودن سطح کوانتومی ریسک، در حرکت است. ارزیابی سطح ریسک بخشی از روند بررسی ریسک برای شناخت اثرات، اهمیت خطر، و خطرات عملیاتی و جنبه¬های ریسک است. روند ارزیابی خطر به طراحی مناسب روش¬های کنترل ریسک جهت پیشنهاد نمودن تأمین اقدامات امنیتی مناسب به منظور کاهش تبعات ریسک، اجتناب از سبک ¬شمردن ریسک¬ و خطرات، کمک می¬کند. ممکن است عملکردهای فاقد ریسک و فاقد نقض یا "خرابی ایمن" در سیستم¬های ایمنی بحرانی منجر به از بین رفتن تجهیزات، خسارت مالی، آسیب¬های زیست¬محیطی و خطرات برای زندگی بشر نشوند. تکنیک¬های استاندارد حاکم به عوامل ریسک متنوعی اشاره دارند و نقاط بالقوه¬ای را نشان می-دهند که در آنها عملیات ایمنی بحرانی می¬تواند به شکست بینجامد. توسعه¬ی یک چارچوب بر استانداردهای اجرایی حاکم استوار است و با ارزیابی ایمنی ریسک برای اتوماسیون ایمنی عملکردهای سیستم ایمنی بحرانی سر و کار دارد. برای کنکاش در عوامل مختلف بنیادین ریسک، اثرات و ارزیابی آن برای مشخص¬سازی دامنه¬، ویژگی¬ها و احتمالات ریسک بطور جامع با در نظر گرفتن شرایط عملی، چارچوبی برای اتوماسیون امنیتی عملکردهای ایمنی بحرانی پیشنهاد می¬شود. این روش عوامل بنیادین ریسک را شناسایی نموده و اهمیت آن را به لحاظ شغلی و مالی تعیین می¬کند. بر اساس این شناسایی، یک مقیاس ده نقطه¬ای جهت بررسی خطرات امنیتی به دست می¬آید. نتایج اعمال این چارچوب به نیروگاه بهبود قابل توجهی را در ارزیابی ریسک در مقایسه با ارزیابی¬های موجود از ریسک نشان داد. این نشانه¬ای از ارزیابی ریسک ایمنی ناکافی/محدود حاکم در پرداختن دقیق به ریسک عملیاتی مربوطه است و اثبات می¬کند که این چارچوب مفید است.

با رشد روز افزون نیاز به ارزیابی کیفیت سیستم های نرم افزاری در صنعت، مسائل جدیدي در حال ظهور هستند. اول، بدليل اينکه اکثر معیارهای کیفیت نرم افزار در سطح اجزای سازنده نرم افزار شخصي تعریف شده است، نیاز به روش هاي تجمیع براي خلاصه سازي نتایج در سطح سیستم وجود دارد. دوم، به دليل اينكه ارزیابی نرم افزار نیاز به استفاده از معیارهای مختلف با احتمال محدوده خروجی متفاوت دارد، نیاز به ترکیب این نتایج در ارزیابی کیفیت یکپارچه وجود دارد. در این مقاله ما از تجربیاتمان در موارد واقعی صنعت و از مقالات علمی مورد نیاز برای تجمیع روش استفاده كرديم. سپس ما راه حلي را از طریق مدل Squale برای تجمیع روش ها ارائه كرديم. در حال حاضر مدلي خاص برای رسیدگی به نیازهای پزشکان طراحی شده است. ما عملکرد، اعتبار Squale را از طریق آزمایشECLIPSE بررسي كرديم. علاوه بر این، ما مدل Squale را به هر دو روش تجمیع سنتی (به طور مثال میانگین حسابی) و با شاخص های نابرابری اقتصادسنجي (به عنوان مثال، شاخص هاي Gini یا Theil) مقایسه كرديم كه اخیرا براي تجمیع معیارهای نرم افزار کاربردی استفاده شد.
