We present and test a new conceptual framework for understanding sustainable transitions in co-evolutionary sociotechnical systems. We apply this in the first study of sustainable transitions in UK retail banking. This system has suffered recently from banking crises, and links to environmentally-sensitive industries such as fossil fuels. Sustainability-focused values-based banks are a potential solution, but have had little impact on mainstream banking systems. We aim to understand the constraints on a potential transition and how to overcome them. Our new approach identifies the intersections between transitions in regimes (using the multi-level perspective MLP) and transitions in practices (using social practice theory SPT), two competing conceptual frameworks in the literature. We ask: what are the intersections between transitions in the banking regime and banking practices, and how may critical points of constraint be unlocked to become points of opportunity, thereby aiding a transition to more sustainable banking systems? We present new empirical findings from a mixed-method case study of the UK banking sector and two values-based banks in particular. Interventions for growing sustainable banking are identified and we demonstrate the added-value of the combined approach through indicating strategies for unlocking the transformative potential of sustainable innovations..

Land use/land cover dynamics using landsat data in a gold mining basin-the Ankobra, Ghana

The Ankobra River basin, which forms part of the Southern-Western River System of Ghana, has become a hub for both large and small-scale mining activities. Some of the activities of these mines threatens the sustainability of its resources in the basin. A study in the basin which focuses on changes in LULC patterns in the basin over the past years is therefore paramount to understand the changes that has taken place and its potential impact on resources in the basin. This study assessed the pattern of Land use/cover changes, and the possible drivers of change, in the basin. The study used multi-spectral Landsat images of 30 m resolution for the years 1991, 2002, 2008 and 2016. The Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin (SCP) in QGIS was used for atmospheric correction, image classification using the spectral angle mapping algorithm, and post processing. The overall difference between the reference and the classified map of 2016 was 5.5% with the overall quantity, exchange and shift components as 1.5%, 3% and 1% respectively. Findings from the study show that, the Ankobra River basin has witnessed noticeable changes over the 25-year study period. Closed forest which occupied 40.4% of the total basin area in 1991 reduced drastically to 22.8% in 2016. The dominant LULC change patterns in the basin are from Closed Forest to Open Forest; Open Forest to Farmland, Settlement/Bare land and Mining Area; and the increase in surface area of Water consequently resulting from the increase in Mining Area. Mining activities, particularly illegal mining was identified to be the dominant driver of deforestation in the Ankobra Basin between the years 2008 and 2016 where mining activities in the basin sharply increased.

The nexus of sustainability practices and financial performance: From the perspective of Islamic banking

This paper evaluated the nexus between sustainability practices and financial performance from the Islamic banking perspective. For the purpose, this study proposed a sustainability measurement framework for Islamic banking. A decade of sustainability data 2008e2017 was collected from the annual reports using a weighted content analysis technique. Results of the Generalized Method of Moments GMM statistical method showed that sustainability practices have a significant positive association with the financial performance indicators of the Islamic banks indicating management and the shareholders perspective. The impact of sustainability practices on the financial performance of the Islamic banks measured from the market perspective was found insignificant. In-depth analysis revealed that the market is not interested in banks spending for its environmental and social sustainability except for their economic sustainability practices. Based on the Islamic financial index created of management, shareholders and the market financial performance indicators, the results showed that sustainability practices have a significant positive association with the Islamic financial index as well. The finding generally implies that improvement in sustainability practices will add financial values to the management, shareholder and the market financial performance indicators of the Islamic banking industry across the world. Results of this study are also providing insights to the policymakers of the Islamic banking industry around the world regarding efficient sustainability management, achieving higher sustainability ratings, and improving the subsequent financial performance through efficient sustainability practices

The impact of social and environmental sustainability onfinancial performance: A global analysis of the banking sector

While there is ample evidence that non-financial firms’ financial performance and social andenvironmental performance are related, evidence for the banking sector remains limitedand inconclusive. This paper examines the impact of access to finance and environmentalfinancing on the financial performance of the banking sector globally. Based on cross-sectional linear regressions and non-linear threshold regressions of 713 banks from 75countries over the period 2013–2015, we find that access to finance has significantly posi-tive effects on banks’ financial performance in most estimation models controlling for bothbank-specific and macroeconomic variables. The positive impact on financial performanceis channeled through loan growth and management quality. We find that for banks withtotal assets less than USD 2 billion, access to finance has a significantly positive impact onreturn to equity. Nutrition-Focused Food Banking in the United States: A Qualitative Study of Healthy Food Distribution Initiatives

Background Nutrition-focused food banking is broadly defined as organizational and programmatic efforts to address nutrition-related health disparities among charitable food clients. Additional information is needed to systematically describe how US food banks, as key influencers of the charitable food system, are working to advance nutrition-focused food banking initiatives in their communities. Objective Our aim was to describe food bank leadershipeidentified organizational strategies, “best practices,” and innovative programs for advancing nutrition-focused food banking in the United States. Design We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews to elicit information about the nutrition-focused food banking practices and processes being employed by US food banks. Participants/setting Participants comprised a purposive sample of food bank executives (n¼30) representing a diverse selection of food banks across the United States. Interviews were conducted between April 2015 and January 2017 at national food bank conferences. Analysis Two researchers independently reviewed transcripts to identify themes using code-based qualitative content analysis. Results Executive leader descriptions of specific strategies to support nutrition-focused food banking centered primarily around the following four major themes: building a healthier food inventory at the food bank; enhancing partner agency healthy food access, storage, and distribution capacity; nutrition education outreach; and expanding community partnerships and intervention settings for healthy food distribution, including health care and schools. Conclusions Study findings indicate that food banks are implementing a variety of multilevel approaches to improve healthy food access among users of the charitable food system. Further evaluation is needed to assess the reach, scalability, and sustainability of these various approaches, and their effectiveness in reducing determinants of nutrition-related health disparities.

Relationship among land price, entrepreneurship, the environment, economics, and social factors in the value assessment of Japanese cities

Assessing the value of local areas and cities, including examining the entrepreneurial, environmental, economic, and social dimensions of sustainability, has become key to fostering development. Such assessments can be conducted using a land-price function. This study analysed the land-price function using a geographically weighted regression model of land price, and explanatory variables related to entrepreneurial, environmental, economic, and social factors. To consider these factors, specific data scores were taken into account. A correlation analysis showed that six variables are essential for future value analyses: these are entrepreneurship, nature conservation, resource recycling, social vitality, the local governments financial viability, and environmental quality. Using these six variables to conduct preliminary regression analyses via four models, the study found that entrepreneurship, social vitality, and environmental quality have a positive impact on land prices in local areas and cities, while nature conservation, resource recycling, and the local governments financial viability have a negative impact. The result of a geographically weighted regression analysis showed that the areas around large cities in Japan have benefitted more from entrepreneurship and social vitality than have the areas around small and mid-sized cities. While large cities may be better equipped to promote environmental policies, small and mid-sized cities could promote entrepreneurship and social vitality policies using their environmental advantages

University-Firm cooperation as a way to promote sustainability practices: A sustainable entrepreneurship perspective

Sustainability is a growing concern in the business world. Therefore, establishing cooperative University- Firm (UeF) relationships, with a view to promoting the implementation of sustainability practices, has become increasingly important and valued by both firms and academia. Thus, from a sustainable entrepreneurship perspective, this study aims to identify and analyse a case study describing a cooperative UeF relationship as a way to promote sustainability. The qualitative research method was adopted, resorting to semi-structured personal interviews with the actors in this relationship and documentary analysis. Content analysis revealed that the UeF cooperation relationship studied here is a mechanism to promote and implement the firms sustainability. Both sides in this cooperation relationship recognize that its purpose was fruitfully and successfully achieved. Therefore, this study contributes to theory, advancing knowledge for the literature on UeF cooperation about sustainability. In the practical domain, the study can also stimulate firms to develop cooperation relationships aiming to promote sustainability and consequently implement sustainable practices.

Measuring sustainability through ecological sustainability and human sustainability: A machine learning approach

Nowadays, sustainability is recognized as one of the most important development paradigms and included in the international and national strategies of almost all organizations. Sustainability assessment methods have been important for monitoring sustainability performance. These methods are developed to help decision-makers in their attempts to make society more sustainable. Various methods have been proposed for assessing the sustainability performance, however, this research is the first attempt to employ fuzzy clustering and supervised machine learning techniques to country sustainability assessment. This research tries to extend the previous sustainability assessment systems by the use of these techniques to reveal the relationships between human sustainability, ecological sustainability and overall sustainability performance by discovering the decision rules. The decision rules discovered from the Sustainability Assessment by Fuzzy Evaluation data of 128 countries are used to predict the country sustainability performance. The method proposed in this paper is flexible to accept large number indicators of sustainability to be used in the assessment of countries sustainability. The results of our analysis on countries sustainability data showed that the proposed method has potential to be used as a decision-making tool for sustainability assessment through a large set of indicators.

Modeling the blockchain enabled traceability in agriculture supply chain

Blockchain Technology (BT) has led to a disruption in the supply chain by removing the trust related issues. Studies are being conducted worldwide to leverage the benefits provided by BT in improving the performance of the supply chains. The literature reveals BT to offer various benefits leading to improvements in the sustainable performance of the agriculture supply chains (ASC). It is expected that BT will bring a paradigm shift in the way the transactions are carried in the ASC by reducing the high number of intermediaries, delayed payments and high transaction lead times. India, a developing economy, caters to the food security needs of an ever-growing population and faces many challenges affecting ASC sustainability. It is therefore essential to adopt BT in the ASC to leverage the various benefits. In this study, we identify and establish the relationships between the enablers of BT adoption in ASC. Thirteen enablers were identified from the literature and validated by the experts before applying a combined Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) and Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) methodology to envision the complex causal relationships between the identified BT enablers. The findings from the study suggest that, among the identified enablers, traceability was the most significant reason for BT implementation in ASC followed by auditability, immutability, and provenance. The findings of the study will help the practitioners to design the strategies for BT implementation in agriculture, creating a real-time data-driven ASC. The results will also help the policymakers in developing policies for faster implementation of BT ensuring food safety and sustainable ASCs.
