Supply chain social sustainability: Standard adoption practices in Portuguese manufacturing firms

Firms are increasingly under pressure to incorporate social sustainability practices into their operations and supply chain management strategies. The purpose of this research is to develop a taxonomy of the supply chain social sustainability (SCSS) practices adopted by firms. The methodology involves two steps. First, the taxonomy is built based on literature review. Second, our empirical analysis, using non-financial (sustainability) reports with a sample of 55 listed companies, identifies standard adoption practices. We used content analysis software to unearth the influential words in the sustainability reports from different industries, sizes, and geographical regions. The content analysis reveals three different themes that provide a snapshot of how Portuguese firms integrate social sustainability into their supply chain and operations. Firms emphasize diverse facets of social sustainability practices in upstream and downstream supply chain based on different industries. The results assume significance and provide unique insights on adoption practices to supply chain practitioners who otherwise have no information on what constitutes supply chain social sustainability in this region.

Integrating lean systems in the design of a sustainable supply chain model

Lean based systems include several practices and tools that have the potential to facilitate an organization to be economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable. The objective of this research is to integrate applications of lean systems in the design and planning model of a supply chain to improve sustainability performances of the overall business. The study defines and identifies antecedents, enablers, and ingredients of sustainable supply chain based on the literature. It also identifies practices and outcomes of Lean based systems that may be applied to supply chain functions in the perspectives of established sustainability criteria. Such practices and outcomes of lean based systems are then incorporated in the design of a sustainable supply chain to become enabler, antecedents or ingredients of sustainability to improve overall business performances. A numerical example illustrates the applicability of the approach.

Privacy preserving data by conceptualizing smart cities using MIDR Angelization

Smart City and IoT improves the performance of health, transportation, energy and reduce the consumption of resources. Among the smart city services, Big Data analytics is one of the imperative technologies that have a vast perspective to reach sustainability, enhanced resilience, effective quality of life and quick management of resources. This paper focuses on the privacy of big data in the context of smart health to support smart cities. Furthermore, the trade-off between the data privacy and utility in big data analytics is the foremost concern for the stakeholders of a smart city. The majority of smart city application databases focus on preserving the privacy of individuals with different disease data. In this paper, we propose a trust-based hybrid data privacy approach named as “MIDR-Angelization” to assure privacy and utility in big data analytics when sharing same disease data of patients in IoT industry. Above all, this study suggests that privacy-preserving policies and practices to share disease and health information of patients having the same disease should consider detailed disease information to enhance data utility. An extensive experimental study performed on a real-world dataset to measure instance disclosure risk which shows that the proposed scheme outperforms its counterpart in terms of data utility and privacy.

Which resources and capabilities underpin strategic key account management?

Key account management (KAM) supports the profitability and financial sustainability of firms in business-to business markets. It also attracts considerable academic research. However, KAM research remains largely atheoretical and lacking in conceptual foundations. This paper argues for an organizational-level, resource-based view of KAM. Using a systematic approach, the authors review the KAM literature to identify the critical re sources and capabilities that underpin strategic KAM. The analysis synthesizes and integrates previous research on KAM applying a resource-based lens to reveal that strategic KAM comprises complex portfolios of resources and capabilities that constitute a source of competitive advantage. The authors discuss the theoretical and practical implications of this unique view of KAM and identify directions for further research.

Cyber Physical System and Big Data enabled energy efficient machining optimisation

Due to increasingly customised manufacturing, unpredictable ambient working conditions in shop floors and stricter requirements on sustainability, it is challenging to achieve energy efficient optimisation for machining processes. This paper presents a novel Cyber Physical System (CPS) and Big Data enabled machining optimisation system to address the above challenge. The innovations and characteristics of the system include the following four aspects: (1) a novel process of “scheduling, monitoring/learning, rescheduling” is designed to enhance system adaptability during manufacturing lifecycles; (2) an innovative energy model to support energy efficient optimisation over manufacturing lifecycles is developed. The energy model, which is enabled by CPS, Big Data analytics and intelligent learning al gorithms, considers dynamic and aging conditions of machine tool systems during manufacturing life cycles; (3) an effective evolutional algorithm based on Fruit Fly Optimisation (FFO), is applied to generate an adaptive energy efficient schedule, and improve schedule when there are significantly varying working conditions and adjustments on the schedule are necessary (that is rescheduling); (4) the system has been successfully deployed into European machining companies to verify capabilities. According to the results, around 40% energy saving and 30% productivity improvement have been achieved in the companies. A practical case study presented in this paper demonstrates the effectiveness and great potential of applicability of the system in practice.

Investigating the feasibility of a reuse scenario for textile fibres recovered from end-of-life tyres

The management of end-of-life tyres (ELTs) is regulated by several national and international legislations aiming to promote the recovery of materials and energy from this waste. The three main materials used in tyres are considered: rubber (main product), which is currently reused in other closed-loop applications; steel, which is used for the production of virgin materials; and textile fibres (approximately 10% by weight of ELTs), which are mainly incinerated for energy recovery (open-loop scenario).
This study aims to propose and validate a new closed-loop scenario for textile fibres based on material reuse for bituminous conglomerates. The final objective is to verify the technical, environmental, financial, and economic feasibility of the proposed treatment process and reuse scenario. After characterization of the textile material, which is required to determine the technological feasibility, a specific process has been developed to clean, compact, and prepare the fibres for subsequent reuse. A life cycle assessment (LCA) has been carried out to quantify the environmental benefits of reusing the fibres. Finally, a cost benefit analysis based on the LCA results was conducted to establish the long-term financial and economic sustainability.
From a technological point of view, the tyre textile fibres could be a promising substitute to the reinforcement cellulose commonly used in asphalts as long as the fibres are properly prepared (compaction and pellet production) for application in the standard bituminous conglomerate production process. From an environmental point of view, relevant benefits in terms of global warming potential and acidification potential reduction were observed in comparison with the standard incineration for energy recovery (respectively −86% and −45%). Moreover, the proposed scenario can be considered as financially viable in the medium to long term (cumulative generated cash flow is positive after the 5th year) and economically sustainable (expected net present value of more than €3,000,000 and economic rate of return of approximately 30%). Finally, the sensitivity and risk analyses show that no specific issues are foreseen for the future implementation in real industrial applications.

A game-theoretic approach to optimize the Time-of-Use pricing considering customer behaviors

Time-of-Use (TOU) pricing is an electricity demand response program with great potential to shave the peak demand and eliminate the need for extra power plants. It is necessary to distinguish which TOU program will lead to profitable results to the utility and customers when the customer behaviors and real work shifts are considered. In this paper, a game-theoretic approach is introduced to formulate the problem using a two-layer mathematical programming model, which is solved by the backward induction to gain the Nash-equilibrium. The case study results show that the equilibrium can create a win-win situation for the utility and customers, i.e. the utility increases its profit and the customer reduces its cost. Among different customers, the utility can focus on the customer with a small penalty factor and a large auxiliary coefficient, who prefers to join the TOU program. Even only a small portion of customers joins the TOU program, large improvements in utilitys profit can be made.

Building small firm performance through intellectual capital development: Exploring innovation as the “black box”☆

Innovation seems to be a fundamental requirement for the growth and sustainability of small businesses. While previous research revealed a strong correlation between intellectual capital and performance, the role of in tellectual capital in facilitating the innovativeness and performance of a firm has not been thoroughly examined in the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) context. This study examines the role of innovativeness in the intellectual capital and organizational performance relationship using a sample of small firms. The results of a survey conducted on 460 small business owners indicate a positive relationship between two components of intellectual capital, human capital and organizational capital, and organizational performance. Further analysis finds that innovativeness partially mediates the relationship between intellectual capital and organizational performance. Our findings indicate that efficiently and effectively organized firms can leverage well skilled and innovative employees to achieve the best performance through innovation.

Impact of shelf life on the trade-off between economic and environmental objectives: A dairy case

Food manufacturers introduce more environmentally friendly processes to account for increasing sustainability concerns. However, these processes often go along with a reduction of product shelf life, limiting the delay of sales to future periods with higher prices. We develop a framework to analyze the impact of shelf life on the trade-off between economic and environmental performance of two types of dairy products. Since the differences in shelf life have their key impact at the tactical planning level, we develop an optimization model for this aggregation level. Its objectives reflect profit and relevant environmental indicators. A rolling horizon scheme is used to deal with price uncertainty, using Eurex futures as price predictors. Our framework uses these tactical planning results for strategic decisions on product and process selection. A real-life case study contrasts traditional milk powders against novel milk concentrates. Concentrates require less energy in processing, but have a shorter shelf life. Results show that powders offer a potential profit benefit of up to 34.5%. However, this economic value of shelf life is subject to a priori perfect price knowledge. If futures are used as price predictors, the value of shelf life is reduced to only 1.1%. The economic value of shelf life is therefore not a strong argument against the substitution of powders with more environmentally friendly concentrates. We also show that two objectives, profit and eutrophication potential, are sufficient to capture trade-offs in the case. Several product mixes are determined that omit powders and perform well with regard to profit and environment.
