1 Environmental uncertainty, specific assets, and opportunism in 3PL relationships: A transaction cost economics perspective

Service provider opportunism is a serious concern in third party logistics (3PL) relationships. However, our knowledge about the antecedents of 3PL providers opportunism is limited. According to transaction cost economics (TCE), increased transaction costs cause opportunism. This study incorporates key TCE constructs (environmental uncertainty, specific assets, and opportunism) and conducts a transaction cost analysis. We argue that environmental uncertainty and specific assets create exchange hazards that result in opportunism. Meanwhile, specific assets reduce coordination costs raised by environmental uncertainty. Building on these arguments, this study tests a model that hypothesizes that environmental uncertainty (demand, supply, and technology uncertainty), and specific assets (user- and provider-specific assets) are positively related to opportunism, and that environmental uncertainty is positively related to specific assets. Structural equation modeling is used to examine data from 247 3PL relationships in China. The results show that demand uncertainty decreases opportunism, supply uncertainty increases opportunism, and technology uncertainty does not have a significant effect. User-specific assets increase opportunism, while provider-specific assets decrease opportunism. Demand and supply uncertainty have positive effects on user-specific assets, but non-significant effects on provider-specific assets, while technology uncertainty does not have a significant impact on user or provider-specific assets. In general, our findings are supported by the rationale of TCE, and industrial or cultural factors can explain several surprising findings. This study contributes to 3PL literature and practice.

2 Optimisation of partial collaborative transportation scheduling in supply chain management with 3PL using ACO

In this paper, we study and analyze the characteristics of transportation vehicle scheduling problem in supply chain management with third party logistics enterprise. First, we subdivide all the transportation nodes into three distinct classifications. A novel partial collaborative transportation scheduling strategy is proposed based on two special kinds of transportation nodes which have integrated the self-support vehicle and 3PL vehicle resource. Then, depending on the transport mode of each kind of transportation nodes, a modified Ant Colony Optimization with negative selection operation (ACO-nso) with varying dimension matrix encoding and modified transition probability operation method has been presented. Finally, the simulative results demonstrate that the proposed approach is practical and efficient.

3 Pricing and return product collection decisions in a closed-loop supply chain with dual-channel in both forward and reverse logistics

This paper deals a closed-loop supply chain with two dual channels – forward dual-channel where a manufacturer sells a product to customers through traditional retail channel and e-tail (internet) channel, and reverse dual-channel where the used items are collected for remanufacturing through the traditional third party logistics and e-tail channel. We derive analytically the pricing and return product collection decisions for the supply chain under five different scenarios viz. centralized, decentralized (Nash game), and manufacturer-led, retailer-led and third party-led decentralized scenarios. We also demonstrate the proposed model through a series of data sets. It is observed from the numerical study that the retailer-led decentralized scenario provides more profit than other decentralized scenarios.

4 Improving performance by coordinating a supply chain with third party logistics outsourcing under production disruption

Third Party Logistics (TPL) is playing a significant role in today’s supply chain management. Business organisations require the service of this company to outsource part or all of their supply chain operations to reduce the burden of logistics activities and achieve customer satisfaction and overall performance. The paper aims to improve, through coordination, the performance of a supply chain consisting of a monopolistic manufacturer, a third party logistics service provider (TPLSP) and multiple independent retailers. The demand at each retailer is uncertain but sensitive to retail price; unexpected production disruption may occur at the source. Buyback and revenue sharing contracts are implemented in the pro posed model and the associated contract parameters are designed so as to coordinate the decentralized supply chain. The participating entities’ strategic decisions which increase the profitability of the whole supply chain are determined. It is observed from the numerical study that production disruption and TPL service have significant impacts on supply chain’s performance, and the effects of buyback and revenue sharing contracts tend to emerge indifferent for relatively high probability of disruption.
